Mr Steve Lyons, Registrar of the South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession states that the quantity surveying profession has a track record of strictly ensuring that the public and client’s financial interests in respect to construction projects are properly managed and safeguarded at all time. He says: “The ethics of the profession is such that we regularly encourage both clients such as Government and private enterprise, plus the registered professionals themselves to report any unacceptable behaviour for the SA Quantity Surveying Council to take strict and decisive action. In this regard, we applaud members of the public and those courageous individuals in the public service who blow the whistle on any fraudulent activity. Recent front page reports are indicative of the numerous similar complaints received of project procurement fraud perpetrated in a multitude of National, Provincial and Local government, plus within most of the larger parastatals. The SACQSP believes that Government would be better served by ensuring that registered quantity surveying professionals are engaged from the commencement of projects. Unregistered ‘professionals’ in these state departments are all too often expected to fulfil the function of a professional Quantity Surveyor. You don’t rely on a nurse to undertake heart surgery”

Recent articles in the press regarding possible fraudulent activity in which members of the quantity surveying professionhave been implicated is of grave concern to the South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession and theAssociation of South African Quantity Surveyors.
