A Texas woman named Ramona wrote a devotional piece that

caught my eye. She wrote about her and her husband watching purple

martins in their backyard, feeding their offspring. One evening they

were surprised and delighted to see a flock of purple martin adults

flying with a small baby bird in their midst. The adult birds took

different positions to teach, encourage, and guide the young one:

some flew overhead and in front, while others flew from behind and

below. The couple was elated when they realized they were

witnessing a flying lesson for the baby purple martin! “The whole

flock seemed to be dancing in the sky, celebrating the event with joy”,

she recalled.

This is the type of guidance that our church can offer one another,

particularly our newest group of Confirmation Students. In addition

to our congregation and the students’ families acting as encouraging

supporters, each Confirmand is also asking one person to be their

official “mentor” for the duration of the class experience. Our

mentors are mature, committed Christians who watch over the

spiritual well-being of their young people. I list them below so that

you can pray for each student and for their mentor who will guide

them on this journey of spiritual discovery, sometimes flying behind

January Mission Offering:

International Child Care

When you consider that most Haitians must survive on as little as $ 2 per day, it’s easy to see how they would struggle for shelter, food, and education. Add to that the need for good health care in a country where proper sanitation systems do not exist, and where clean water is something very difficult to find. Children are the most common victims in Haiti. One out of every twelve children will not live to see their fifth birthday because of some preventable disease that killed them. Grace Children’s Hospital, operated by International Child Care, exists to serve these poorest of the poor, the most vulnerable among us. Your January mission gift designated to ICC (International Child Care) will help provide quality healthcare for those who cannot afford it, and work in effective ways to keep Haitians from being overcome by preventable diseases. The organization also serves disabled children on the other side of the island in the Dominican Republic, where parents are taught proper therapeutic skills to help their children reach their full potential and show them how much they are loved. Checks should be made payable to “CUMC”, designating them to ICC in the memo line.

FUSION Thanksgiving Report

Our ecumenical group of local churches, known

as “Fusion”, came together to host a

Community Thanksgiving Worship in

November, meeting at Grace Bible Church in

Minooka.

Between 175-200 people came to the event to

thank God for their blessings, witnessing a

combined choir led by our own Brittany

Alcantar. Offerings of non-perishable food

donations were brought to a center table and

prayed over by all the clergy and the whole

congregation. These donations, plus $230 in

cash, were given to our local food pantries at

Minooka UMC, Minooka Bible Church,

Chanooka Wish, and Living Manna.

Thanks to Barb Powell for organizing the

homemade cookies we provided for refreshment

time!

Watch for future news as the “Fusion” churches

continue to work with the Channahon Park

District to organize a spring clean-up day in our

local parks.

New Memorial Benches

for Our Prayer Path

The church has used memorial funds to purchase two

beautiful memorial park benches to provide a hospitable

place of rest for those who experience the prayer path that

encircles our church property.

They will require no maintenance since they are made out

of durable recycled plastic with metal supports. One bench

memorializes Arlene Hawkins and son Jack Hawkins, Jr.

Another bench memorializes Bill McClintock, Sr.

Many thanks to their families for working with Pastor

Steve and our Memorial Committee Chair Elaine Coen.

Thanks to Sonny Hedgren for their assembly and

installation on the prayer path.

Did you know?: Recycled plastic benches are produced

with the equivalent of about 1,000 plastic milk jugs!

Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always

excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord

your labor is not in vain.

– 1 Corinthians 15:58

1 Thessalonians 5:14-22

And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Jonestown ~ Habitat for Humanity Mission Trip Sunday, March 29th – Saturday, April 4th, 2015

Wilson Young

For several years now, Channahon United Methodist Church has sent a group of people to Jonestown, Mississippi to help build a house with the local Habitat for Humanity chapter. It is a week of learning, sharing, and growing.

Jonestown is a small town about 70 miles southwest of Memphis, TN. In 1999, the median family income for a Jonestown family was $18,958.

Our trip is timed to coincide with Minooka Community High School’s spring break. We will leave early on Sunday, March 29th and return on the evening of Saturday, April 4th.

There will be a Jonestown Mission Trip meeting on January 11th at 11:30 am. The $50 deposit for youth and the $75 deposit for adults will be due at that meeting. The total cost of the trip (including church subsidy) is estimated to be about $300. Youth Council is offering $150 toward any Sr. High youth interested in going, and Outreach is offering $75 to any adult interested as well. Additional money may be available for financial hardship cases.

One of the topics of the February 8th meeting (2/8 @11:30) will be food. How many meals will we cook, and who is bringing what?

We will fill out the Habitat for Humanity waivers and medical forms at or before the March 15th meeting.

Nationally, Habitat for Humanity has safety rules which require anyone on the construction site to be at least 16 years old. Although youth younger than 16 can go on the trip, they may need to work on an alternate project at another site which may make logistics difficult. Last year, this was not a problem because we were working on multiple houses. If this is a concern to you, we can discuss it.

Any questions or need more information, contact Wilson at [email protected].

Looking for a Happier New Year??

As the New Year comes around, many of us become reflective and consider the parts of our lives that we would like to transform. Often these revolve around kicking bad habits (such as eating less junk food) or developing new good ones (like exercising more).

On a basic level, resolutions, or promises, are part of everyday Christian life. Romans 12:2 calls us to transform our minds every day so we that can know and live out God’s will for us. ‘Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.’ In other words, Paul urges us to promise to our best to follow God each day. Then, in 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, Paul uses the images of an athlete in training. He refers to the ancient Olympics to encourage self-discipline and striving toward a goal. “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”

So, what are some resolutions we could make in the New Year to help us on our Christian journey? Here are a few ideas:

1. Plan to spend more time studying the Bible

It could be a devotional, reading through the Bible in a year, spend more time listening to Christian radio (like these FM stations, 88.7 89.7, 94.3, or 104.7). Pick one verse and read a reflect on it every day. Be creative!

2. Pray every day

Make an appointment with God – and yourself – to pray each day. Try to follow a pattern as you pray for people and issues in the world by using prayer lists. Join the church’s prayer chain. Or start one with some of your friends. Begin keeping a prayer journal. Find a special time and place each day to pray.

3. Work on your problem areas

Pray that God will reveal the areas in your life you need to work on this year. Acknowledge, confess and repent of your failures. Then, find someone to share your struggles with. Invite them to share their challenges with you. Then, pray for each other regularly and check in with each other on how you are doing.

4. Develop a positive habit

There may be other things in your life that it would be good to work on. These could include eating better, sleeping better, exercising more, being more organized – you know what you struggle with. Remember we are physical beings, as well as spiritual. We need to work on both areas of our life to function at our best.

Don't rely just on willpower

The world is pretty cynical about New Year’s resolutions. According to research, you are most likely to slip back to your old behaviors between five to seven times before changing your ways. And it takes at least 66 days to develop a new habit. With these statistics, it’s easy to see why most resolutions don’t make it past January. But thankfully, as Christians, we have a greater power at work in us that can helps us see things through. The Spirit of God works within us, conforming us to the image of Christ. If God is for us – who can be against us? And what’s even better – we know there God offers forgiveness and grace when we do slip up.

So, why not take some time in the New Year to consider the aspects of your life that need work, while resolving each and every day to choose to live for Christ? Working toward those goals will guarantee you a happier New Year.

Youth Group Reflection

S.T.O.M.P. (Students Taking Our Ministry Personal)

In December (Sr. High Small Group) STOMP's service project was to make cookies and distribute them to random homes in the community in hopes of spreading the spirit of Christmas. The group was amazed by the reactions of some of the recipients. Not only were the people appreciative of the thoughtfulness and cookies, they wanted the group to sing, too. Although they didn’t plan for that, they were all able to whip up “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”. It was a fun evening of service.

Before they departed on their mission, STOMP left their mark on the new Fellowship Hall floor. For the youth who couldn’t be there, they were with them in spirit.

CUMC Youth Drive Roger “Up the Wall”

Well, not exactly, but we will have a fun-filled afternoon climbing the rock walls at Vertical Endeavors in Warrenville.

We are planning our next big outing for Saturday, Jan. 24th, from 1: 00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The Youth Group will meet at church at 12:45 and leave promptly at 1:00. We need to arrive at Vertical Endeavors by 1:45 to get checked in and start climbing at 2:00. We’ll climb from 2:00 to 4:00, then head down to Portillo’s in Shorewood for dinner out as a Youth Group. We should be back at church between 6:30 and 7:00.

Brittany Alcantar, Roger Beitzel, Rachel Lynch and Kellen Walker will all be shepherding the youth for this awesome activity.

Here are some important details.

The cost will be $20 for Vertical Endeavors, plus another $10-$20 for dinner, depending on your appetite. Families can make checks payable to Channahon UMC. Please give your payments to Youth Leader Roger Beitzel and Please do not put them in the offering plate. That way we can be sure your youth is signed up and paid up.

CUMC never wants money to keep youth from participating in our activities. If you need help paying for this outing, contact Roger privately, and he will arrange for confidential financial support for your family.

Also, each person climbing – both youth and adults – will need to print and sign a Vertical Endeavors waiver. In addition, each youth attending will need to have a Youth Group permission slip. Hard copies of these forms will be available by the Youth Board in the narthex.

You can use this link to sign up and do the waiver : at Vertical Endeavors/Warrenville

http://verticalendeavors.com/warrenville/ or you can call or text Roger at 630.338.2692

Registration and payment for Vertical Endeavors are due no later than Jan. 18th, please!

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because he first loved us
