Autism Calgary is presented with a cheque for $1500 from CIPS Alberta at the ICE Conference.

CIPS Alberta held its annual ICE (Inspire, Connect and Educate) technology con-

ference on November 1, 2 and 3rd. The conference was held in both Edmonton and

Calgary for the first time this year and was a big success with almost three hundred

tickets sold and over 800 individual's attending the conference sessions. There was an

exciting line-up of keynote speakers such as Douglas Merrill, former CIO of Google,

Kerrie Hollie, IBM Fellow and CTO, Larry Deboever, CEO, VersionStatus and Arlene

Ponting, Alberta Science Foundation.

Conference Chair, Lee Mainman said, "We are very

pleased overall with the success of the ICE Con-

ference in 2011 and are very excited to be adding

even more content next year. We will be looking at

expanding on this success in both Edmonton and

Calgary". CIPS Alberta would like to thank all the

attendees, speakers, sponsors and volunteers for

their contributions to making the conference an

important part of supporting and growing IT in

Alberta.

In lieu of giving out speakers gifts at this year’s ICE

Conference, CIPS Alberta sought out an orga-

nization with which to support via a charitable

donation, and in so doing was notified of Specialisterne

Canada. $1,500 was donated to this important initiative

on behalf of CIPS Alberta – an overview of this project

is outlined below.

TheChallenge

Asperger’s Syndrome is characterized by significant

difficulties in social interaction, along with restricted

and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. It

differs from other autism spectrum disorders by its

relatively normal linguistic and cognitive development.

About 1 in 250 children born this year will be affected.

Individuals with Asperger’s often have higher than

average IQ, and frequently have special mental gifts –

photographic recall is common. In spite of this, adults

with Asperger’s have an unemployment rate of 85%.

The problem is that socially, they do not ‘fit in’.

This is costly to the individual, and costly to busi-

ness, as companies lose out on employees with great

strengths:

• Passion for details

• Focused concentration

• Perseverance for repetition actions

• Pattern recognition capabilities

• Ability to spot deviances in data information and

systems

• Out of the box thinking

• Honesty

• Courage

TheSolution

Observing the amazing abilities of his own son with

Asperger’s, Danish information technology profes-

sional Thorkill Sonne founded Specialisterne (‘The

Specialists’) in 2004, employing persons with autism as

IT consultants, primarily in software testing and con-

version. The Copenhagen company has thrived on the

special skills of IT employees, delivered the benefits of

their talents to Danish firms, and created good jobs for

over 50 people, 33 of which are on the autism spectrum.

In 2009, Thorkil set up the non-profit Specialist Peo-

ple Foundation and sold Specialisterne to it for a single

Danish Krone. The foundation’s goal is to create one

million jobs for those on the autism spectrum, in part

through facilitating the start-up of similar operations

in other countries. Licensed Specialisterne operations

have been established in Reykjavik, Glasgow, and Berne.

Operations in Berlin and Warsaw are in start-up phase,

and planning is underway for companies in many other

countries around the world.

Calgary has tremendous potential to be a successful

Specialisterne site. It has roughly twice the popula-

tion of Copenhagen, and more significant, has a much

higher proportion of information technology activity.

SpecialisterneCanada

The Specialist People Foundation has adopted

a licensee model to facilitate the start-up of local

companies. Licensed operations gain access to the

Specialisterne business model; an extensive library

covering assessment training, management and mar-

keting; and access to Specialisterne’s existing business

contracts with global companies such as IBM, Microsoft

and Nokia.

The Specialisterne Canada Advisory Board’s Goal

is to establish Specialisterne Canada as a viable Cal-

gary-based not-for-profit company. Autism Calgary, a

registered charity, is underwriting this project.

To achieve licensee status, candidate firms must go

through a rigorous start-up process. The first step is a

very thorough feasibility study. In short, the study will

attempt to answer the questions: “Can a Specialisterne

licensee succeed in Calgary, and what changes will need

to be made to the Danish model?”

The Specialisterne Canada Advisory Board is pres-

ently fundraising for the feasibility study phase of the

project.

This is a very worthwhile project. It has the

potential to address a serious and growing

social issue using a sustainable business model

– creating winning conditions for the autistic

consultants it employs, the companies

it serves and our society at large.

Calgary January 5th Luncheon IT Staffing in Calgary, Rates, Trends and Hot SpotsDerek Bullen, S.i. Systems

Derek Bullen has provided keen insight into local and global trends that affect supply, rates, and demand for IT talent. Using their proprietary staffing data as a leading indicator, S.i. Systems announced in June 2007 that we were headed into a long recession in the fall of 2008 in their client newsletter, the prediction turned out to be true. In March 2011, when oil was above $100/bbl, the S.i. quarterly update published to clients predicted that oil would drop to the low 90s before the end of 2011 and that talent demand in Alberta would continue to grow, but at a slower pace, also true. Publish-ing an annual IT salary guide that has become a standard for measuring rates each year, Derek will draw from their 2012 predications to let you know about talent supply, prices, and hot spots for 2012.

Speaker Derek Bullen is the Founder and President of S.i. Systems, a privately held, national staffing company specializing in IT, finance and ac-counting, engineering and design profession-als. In the early days of Business Intelligence (BI), the focus was on awareness of the discipline and developing sound approaches and meth-odologies to ensure success and drive busi-ness value. Now, awareness is not a problem, but proliferation of the concept is. January 18th Dinner MeetingGreen IT: Who, What, When, Where and Why?Chris Hammond-Thrasher, MLIS CISSP Fujitsu Canada

IT - or at least the energy consumed by IT - is a growing source of global greenhouse gas emissions. Government and industry are increasingly turning their attention to IT as a potential engine for emission reductions. Methods are being introduced to reduce the emissions footprint of IT operations - from improving data centre cooling and power consumption, to increasing the efficiency of

end user devices. At the same time, innovators are looking to IT to enable emission reduc-tions through increasingly sophisticated power management systems - from smart grids to smart buildings. This session will explore some of these trends and what they mean for public and private organizations in Alberta.

Speaker Chris Hammond-Thrasher is an Associate Director with Fujitsu Canada specializing in se-curity, privacy and technical risk based out of Edmonton. Chris is also a founding member of Fujitsu Canada's Green IT core team which is tasked with bringing Fujitsu's substantial expe-rience in sustainable IT in Japan, Australia, the UK and the US to the Canadian marketplace.

The Women in IT program is an annual, national program targeted at teenage girls

with the purpose of changing their perceptions about careers in IT. A national is-

sue affecting the IT profession and industry is the low percentage of females in the

profession as well as the declining enrolment of females in math, science, and com-

puter science courses. CIPS created the Women in IT program to help address this

issue as well as provide career information to high school girls across the country.

We are currently looking for female volunteers with experience or training in the

IT industry (or related technical fields), to assist on the day of the event.
