PASTORAL NOTES AND RUBRICS

Our Lord Jesus Christ, by his example and teaching, entrusted to his church a ministry of healing. This ministry is exercised in various ways: by visiting, by the laying on of hands, by anointing, by confession and absolution, and pre-eminently in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, which is both the medicine of immortality and the sacrament of our fellowship in the Body of Christ.

If any communicant is unable through sickness or infirmity to come to church, the parish priest should be informed.

The priest or other minister should take into account the particular circumstances, needs and desires of the sick and those who look after them and should willingly use the various opportunities that the rites provide sensitively, intelligently and flexibly, shortening, lengthening or adapting them as the physical, mental and emotional condition of the sick person dictates. However, those parts of the rite marked by a line may never be omitted. Ministers should remember that the elderly, the sick and the dying, especially those with impaired vision, may often find comfort and reassurance in familiar prayers and great sensitivity is needed if they are to be helped to make use of these provisions.

Where the priest anoints or lays hands upon more than one person the appropriate references in the prayers should be changed from the singular to the plural.

In choosing readings and prayers ministers should bear in mind that the housebound are not necessarily sick and that therefore the readings of the previous Sunday or of a holy day may be the most appropriate.

In order to respect the fullness of the sacramental sign, whenever possible it is recommended that a priest celebrates the Holy Eucharist with the sick person and with his or her family and friends. Where circumstances dictate Holy Communion may be administered by a priest or other authorised minister from the Reserved Sacrament.

2

Our Lord Jesus Christ gave power to his church to forgive sins in his name. This ministry, committed to them at their ordination, is exercised by bishops and priests. General absolution may be given, in the public services of the church, or absolution may be given individually and privately. The practice of private confession, made under the seal of secrecy, whilst not obligatory, is open to all and its use is particularly encouraged for those who may benefit from it, whether to give peace of mind to a troubled conscience or as an aid to growth in a life of faith and devotion. If circumstances allow, and the sick person has not confessed in this way before, careful instruction should be given to ensure suitable preparation.

When the first form of general confession is used, the sick person may repeat it line by line after the minister if this is judged to be more appropriate.

The office of anointing the sick is performed by bishops and priests. The oil, which should be pure olive oil, is normally consecrated by the bishop.

A public liturgy of healing should include readings from scripture, prayers of praise, intercession and thanksgiving, and a confession of faith. Appropriate psalms and hymns may be sung. The laying on of hands and the anointing of the sick are celebrated according to the rites given on pages (oo) and (oo).

APPENDIX 1

MINISTRY OF RECONCILIATIONA FORM OF CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

The priest may read one of the following or other appropriate sentences from Scripture:

Our Lord Jesus Christ said, Come to me, all whose work is hard, whose load is heavy; and I will give you rest.

This is a true saying, to be completely accepted and believed: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

The priest may bless the penitent, saying:

The Lord be in your heart and on your lips, that you may confess your sins in honesty and sincerity and know the truth that sets you free; in the name of the father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The confession then follows, using these or other appropriate words:

I confess to almighty God, and before you, that I have sinned in thought, words and deed, and failed to do what I ought to have done. I remember especially the following sins …

For these and all my other sins, which I cannot now remember, I am very sorry and truly repent; I resolve to lead a better life; I humbly ask for God’s forgiveness, for absolution in his name, and for your help and guidance.

17

Page 18: cinw.s3.amazonaws.comcinw.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Mi…  · Web viewpour out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge. [Psalm 62.5-8] or: Let my cry come

The priest may offer counsel and suggest an appropriate short act of thanksgiving for God’s forgiveness.

The priest absolves the penitent, using the following words:

Our Lord Jesus Christ, who has left power to his Church to absolve all sinners who truly repent and believe in him, of his great mercy forgive all your offences. And, by his authority committed to me, I absolve you from all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Thanks be to God.

The priest dismisses the penitent using these or other appropriate words:

‘The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.’

God give you grace to grow in holiness, to walk in his ways of truth and peace, and joyfully to bear the fruit of his Spirit. And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always. Amen.

The Lord has set you free from sin.Go in peace; and pray for me, a sinner.

APPENDIX 2

THE LAYING ON OF HANDSCELEBRATED AS A SEPARATE RITE

Our help is in the name of the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.

Then is said either:

Wait on God alone in stillness, O my soul;for in him is my hope.

He alone is my rock and my salvation,my stronghold, so that I shall not be shaken.

In God is my strength and my glory;God is my strong rock; in him is my refuge.

Put your trust in him always, my people;pour out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge. [Psalm 62.5-8]

18

or:

Let my cry come before you, O Lord;give me understanding, according to your word.

Let my supplication come before you;deliver me, according to your promise.

Let your hand reach out to help me,for I have chosen your commandments.

I have longed for your salvation, O Lord, and your law is my delight.Let my soul live and it will praise you,and let your judgements be my help.

I have gone astray like a sheep that is lost;O seek your servant, for I do not forget your commandments. [Psalm 119.169-170, 173-176]

At this point the sick person may wish to make an individual confession (See Appendix 1.) Otherwise, one of the following forms of general confession and the absolution are used.

Silence.

EitherHeavenly Father,we have sinned in thought, word and deed, and have failed to do what we ought to have done.We are sorry and truly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ who died for us,forgive us all that is past and lead us in his wayto walk as children of light. Amen.

Lord, have mercy.Lord, have mercy.

Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repenthave mercy on you and set you free from sin, strengthen you in goodness and keep you in eternal life;through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then is read:

Jesus said, “Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, “The Kingdom of God has come near to you.” [Luke 10.8-9]

A profession of the Christian faith is now made as follows:

Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. [5.14-16a]

APPENDIX 8SUGGESTED READINGS

N.B. At a celebration of the Holy Eucharist, a passage from numbers 1-8 may be chosen for the first reading, a passage from numbers 9-17 for the psalm and a passage from numbers 18-23 for the gospel reading.

1. Isaiah 43.1-3a, 4-5a

Thus says the Lord,he who created you, O Jacob,he who formed you, O Israel:

34

Page 35: cinw.s3.amazonaws.comcinw.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Mi…  · Web viewpour out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge. [Psalm 62.5-8] or: Let my cry come

Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.For I am the Lord your God,the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour.Because you are precious in my sight, and honoured, and I love you,I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life.Do not fear, for I am with you.

2. Extracts from Isaiah 61.1-3

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me;he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed,to proclaim liberty to captives,to comfort all who mourn –to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit.

3. Jeremiah 30.17

I will restore health to you,and your wounds I will heal, says the Lord.

4. Acts 4.8-12

Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said, “Rulers of the people and elders, if we are questioned today because of a good deed done to someone who was sick and are asked how this man has been healed, let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. This Jesus is ‘the stone that was rejected by you, the builders; it has become the cornerstone.’There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved.”

5. Romans 8.18-25

I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

This reading may continue as follows, or the verses may be read on their own.Romans 8.26-28

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is in the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.

6. 2 Corinthians 1.3-5

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all consolation, who consoles us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to console those who are in any affliction with the consolation with which we ourselves are consoled by God. For just as the sufferings of Christ are abundant for us, so also our consolation is abundant through Christ.

7. James 5.13-16a

Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed.

8. Extracts from Revelation 22.1-2

The angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb.On either side of the river, is the tree of life;and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

9. Psalm 16.7-10

I have set the Lord always before me;he is at my right hand; I shall not fall.

Wherefore my heart therefore is glad and my spirit rejoices;my flesh also shall rest secure.

For you will not abandon my soul to Death, nor suffer your faithful to see the Pit.

You will show me the path of life;in your presence is fullness of joy,and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

10. Psalm 20.1-2

May the Lord hear you in the day of trouble,the name of the God of Jacob defend you;

Send you help from his sanctuary

17 Psalm 121.1-5, 7

I lift up my eyes to the hills;from where is my help to come?

My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.

He will not suffer your foot to stumble;he who watches over you will not sleep.

Behold, he who keeps watch over Israelshall neither slumber nor sleep;

The Lord himself watches over you;the Lord is your shade at your right hand.

The Lord shall keep you from all evil;it is he who shall keep your soul.

18. Matthew 8.14-17

When Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever; he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she got up and began to serve him. That evening they brought to him many who were possessed with demons; and he cast out the spirits with a word, and cured all who were sick. This was to fulfil what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah, “He took our infirmities and bore our diseases.”

19 Mark 6.7,12-13

Jesus called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. So they went out and proclaimed that all should

repent. They cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

20 Luke 7.18b-22

John summoned two of his disciples, and sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?” When the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?’” Jesus had just cured many people of diseases, plagues, and evil spirits, and had given sight to many who were blind. And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have good news brought to them.”

21 John 3.16

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

22 John 6.16-21

When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land toward which they were going.

23 John 6.53-58

Jesus said, “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father has sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me, This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live for ever.”
