Cinque TerreTra cielo e mare un paesaggio fatto dalluomoA man
made landscape between sky and sea
The Cinque TerreThe Cinque Terre, recognized by UNESCO as World
Heritage of Hu-manity, within the National Park and the Protected
Sea Area, are ve towns, Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza
and Monterosso, located in a corner of Liguria which reveals its
history not only through the structure of the villages, the
churches, the sanctuaries, the muse-ums spread over the territory
but, above all, through its landscape. As a matter of fact,
generations of men have created with great effort and determination
a monumental architecture of terraces rising steeply from the sea,
supported by over 7000 km of dry stone walls where the vineyards
produce an excellent wine of designated origin among which the
excellent Sciacchetr, ancient meditation wine, and the olive trees
produce an extra virgin olive oil which wonderfully complements the
local cuisine. The maquis boasts a vegetation that is composed
pri-marily of euphorbias, brooms, cisti and imposing agaves which
alter-nate specialized organic elds under cultivation, aromatic
herbs and basil. The coastline is enchanting with its variety: high
cliffs overhang the cobalt blue sea oors and hide tiny pebble
beaches, reefs and sandy beaches. To see the Cinque Terre, it is
recommended to take the train, the ferries or the nautical vehicles
respecting the marine reserve. In any case the best way is to walk
along the paths and the centuries old ights of steps that once used
to be the only available connecting routes and which offer a view
of a landscape where the sky and the sea prevail. The most famous
path is the Via dellAmore between Man-arola and Riomaggiore:
sloping steeply down to the sea and partly dug out of the rock, it
belongs to the Sentiero Azzurro, which con-nects Riomaggiore to
Monterosso. Between Vernazza and Corniglia, ro-mantic coves can be
reached on foot, while wider and more equipped beaches can be found
in Monterosso.

You always have to be very careful because of the different
levels of the ground, the paths may slope steeply down-upwards and
to the open spots, especially the ones overlooking ravines. Due to
uneven ground in some places we would recommend suitable footwear.
In bad weather certain parts of footpath n. 2 are closed for safety
reasons as there is a risk of landslides.
