He’s the National Tournament Director who was No. 1 in the Mid- west from the day in 1967 when he was promoted to the top level until he retired in 1988. As men- tioned in the Daily Bulletins at the Boston NABC last November, Karl has been having a running battle against cancer. The news is good, according to Patty Johnson, the director who is in charge of Operations at NABCs and who now runs most of the major tournaments in Florida. “There was serious concern that the can- cer had spread,” Patty reports, “but a guided needle biopsy he had last Monday came back clean. He’s going to start radiation next week to clean up what- ever may be left. He should be good for several more years.” What makes Patty feel especially good is that Karl is strong enough to be back on the golf course. “He’s back to shooting 83 and 84 the way he used to. He shoots a round a couple of times a week, but he’s going to try to up that to three a week soon.” The Johnsons now live in Sebring FL, and they have lots of contact with other former ACBL people. Their most constant companions are Harry and Sandy Clark. Harry also is a former National Tour- nament Director who was best known for his quiet approach to tournament bridge – just about nothing ever got on Harry’s nerves. And Sandy was Julie Greenberg’s chief assistant in the Education Depart- ment. Now Sandy is the head paginator for the local paper. The Johnsons and the Clarks frequently get together to play mah jongg – usually about four times a week. And Harry is Karl’s regular compan- ion on the golf course. Look at the following North-South hands fromthe first session of Friday’s Open Pairs I and decidehow many spades (four, six, more?) you would liketo be playing.

 A 6 5 2 A 5 K 7 6 K 9 8 6

 K J 9 7 Q 10 2 A Q J 9 A 4

Oh, all right, I’ll tell you that the opening leadis the 4 (by East): 10, J, A. Any better idea of whatcontract you’d like to be in?

Well, Alan Sontag, sitting North, playing withlongtime partner Gladys Collier, found himself in4, probably not the optimum spot. The play to trickone went as described. Sontag then cashed the A,everyone following, and led a second spade, Eastplaying low and Sontag inserting dummy’s jack,West playing the 10. On the K West pitched a heart.Sontag then played four rounds of diamonds, pitch-ing a heart from his hand as West pitched a.. . .well, what should he pitch? The full deal:

Dlr: West A 6 5 2Vul: E-W A 5

 K 7 6 K 9 8 6

 10 3 Q 8 4 K J 8 6 9 7 4 3 8 5 2 10 4 3 J 10 7 3 Q 5 2

 K J 9 7 Q 10 2 A Q J 9 A 4

If West pitches a heart, Sontag ruffs out the K,establishing dummy’s queen for his 13th trick. IfWest pitches a club, Sontag plays A, K, ruffs aclub in dummy to establish his 13th trick in the formof the 13th club -- a nifty little trump squeeze.

In practice, West pitched a club. Those whoknow him know that Sontag rarely stops for thought, even in quite difficult bidding or play situations.Well, this was no exception. Sontag played as de-scribed without so much as a moment’s pause forthought.

Plus 510 may not have been a top, but the playwas certainly tops!

Her favorite is the bromeliad – “thereare more than 2000 varieties of bromeliads in the rainforest,” she said. There is a photo of Thelma in theMarch issue of Scientific American – she’s stretchingup the side of a mountain to reach a bromeliad whiletwo men brace her against falling from below.

John met her family – mother, father, aunts – anddogs! Turnabout was only fair, and in DecemberThelma came to Indianapolis to meet John’s family. That’s when they decided to get married.

So Thelma came back to the United States lastTuesday, and one day later John and Thelma were manand wife.

“We’re going to stay in the United States becauseI wouldn’t be able to make a living in Brazil,” saidBlubaugh. "Thelma’s going to look for a job in herspecialty here.” John of course makes his living frombridge as a pro. A Diamond Life Master, he has beenvictorious in more than 100 regionals.

Blubaugh is interested in nature, but what isThelma’s connection with bridge? None! She has neverplayed the game. In fact she has never played cards. So guess what she’s doing while her husband playsbridge here? She’s a caddy, and she’s thoroughly en-joying it. She’s meeting a lot of bridge players, andshe’s fascinated by the tremendous interest these peopleshow in a game!

Hegeman’s 1NT opener would not be everyone’schoice, but it worked out extremely well in this case.

Cohen, guided by his high-card points and, toan extent, by the law of total tricks (West could haveno more than seven spades, and he was contractingfor an eight-trick contract with a paucity of high-card points), had no trouble applying the ax to West.

The upshot was quick and bloody. West man-aged three trump tricks and the A, finishing downfour for minus 800. Hegeman was disappointed thatthe score was good for only 10 of 11 matchpoints, but she was thrilled with the evening of bridge.

Said Hegeman: “We had a wonderful game.”

Is there life after Board for former long-

time members of the ACBL Board of Direc-tors. If Don Moeller, District 11’s representa-tive to the Board for 25 years, is any example, there may be more life after than during.

Here’s a breakdown on the kind of life Donis leading now:

– Trustee for the ACBL Charity Founda-tion, including serving as treasurer since 1984.

– Treasurer of the Midwest Monitor since1974.

– Member of the District 11 Board of Di-rectors since 1970.

– Treasurer of District 11 since 1995.– Volunteer for two days' work a week for

the Kettering Medical Center.– Co-manager of the development fund

for the Lutheran school in Miami Valley.– Trustee for the ACBL Pension Founda-

tion.“I don’t miss being on the Board,” Don

says. “I’m not at all disappointed to be relievedof all that responsibility. I still enjoy the workI do with the Charity Foundation, and all thoseother activities keep me pretty busy.

“I also belong to a club, but I don’t playbridge. I play gin rummy. I’m still interestedin bridge, but more as an academic exercisethan as a game to play.”

see bridge rise to the level of popularity it en-joyed in the Forties and Fifties.

“I know I can do it,” says Roth, who claimshe hasn’t slept much in recent weeks because ofthe ideas he has swirling about in his head – ideashe believes could bring about a bridge revival.

Roth is making his first appearance in yearsat an NABC at the behest of longtime friendMichaels, who played with Roth frequently whenthe two lived in Washington DC in the Fifties.

“We used to have a group that would play to-gether,” says Michaels, who now lives in PrairieVillage KS. “We would have an auction that wouldgo 1, Pass, Pass, Pass – making six – and it wouldbe a push because there was another Roth-Stonepair at the other table.”

Roth was not happy with his game on Friday, but Michaels seemed to be enjoying herself. “I’veenjoyed talking to him,” she says. “He likes totalk about bridge.”

He should. He’s been doing it throughout hisplaying career, which spans 65 years.

Generally regarded as the most original bid-ding theorist of his generation, Roth is the inven-tor of an impressive array of conventions stillpopular with tournament players. Here’s bettingyou have these Al Roth inventions on your con-vention card: negative doubles, unusual notrump, forcing 1NT and weak two-bids.

He’s still at it, too. Roth recently devised aconvention card he’s been giving away that fea-tures all of his gadgets. He claims it’s a simplesystem, easy to learn and a perfect complementto the lectures he hopes to give to stimulate inter-est in bridge. Roth plans to give a copy of hisconvention card to each person who attends oneof his lectures.

Throughout his long career, Roth has neverstopped inventing – and tinkering with his inven-tions.

The sometimes cranky expert was born inNew York and learned to play auction bridge atCity College of New York. One day, someonementioned that there was a new form of bridgebeing played – and overnight everyone Roth knewhad switched to contract bridge.

He cut his bridge teeth at the Mayfair Club, owned and operated at the time by Harry Fishbein.Roth later bought the club from Fishbein and ranit for 25 years.

Along the way, Roth and Tobias Stone werecredited with creating the Roth-Stone system, nowsynonymous with super-sound opening bids. Rothstill believes in the efficacy of that approach.“When you open weak hands, you destroy yourpartner,” Roth avers.

Roth has taught bridge in country clubs, runa bridge school in Washington DC and operatedbridge clubs in Miami Beach and New York City, always inventing, and creating ways to sell bridge.“I had the first IMP duplicate game in the coun-try, and I was the first to introduce bid boxes,” hesays. “I saw them at a tournament in Switzerlandand brought them back to use at my club.”

Roth claims to have influenced many success-ful players. Michaels counts herself as one ofthem.

“Al has no idea how many of the things hetaught me that I still play,” she says.

Roth loves to tell the story about an up-and-coming player he counseled on one occasion. Hetold the budding expert that it pays to take aminute or two to think about the play of a con-tract. During that time, Roth told him – especiallyif you’re looking for a key card such as a queen –the player holding the card might become ner-vous. If the nervous player puts his hand down inhis lap, that could be a dead giveaway.

Later on, Roth found himself at the tableagainst that very same player. As it happened,Roth needed to find a queen to make his contract. He paused after the opening lead, and noted hisformer student put his hand in his lap. Roth playedhis former student’s partner for the missing card– successfully. “It was reverse psychology,” Rothsays with a laugh.

In 1955, Michaels and Roth, playing withGratian Goldstein and Harold Harkavy, won theMaster Mixed Teams at the Summer NABC inChicago.

On one of the key deals, Roth held this hand

(spot cards not exact): Q J K J 7 6 5 A Q 10 5 4 3 —

Roth started proceedings by passing (!!). Theauction then proceeded:West North East South

Pass (!!)Pass 1 Dbl Pass (!!!)2 2 4 55 Pass Pass 6Pass Pass 6 7All Pass

Michaels says she knew Roth had a huge fit withher, and "if they made the wrong opening lead, Iwould make it.”

She was right. East, holding the A K, tabledthe A, noting with horror the dummy Roth putdown. Michaels’ hand (spot cards not exact):

 5 A Q 9 8 3 K J 6 2 K Q 7

Says Roth: “The first rule of the game is to buythe contract, and I knew everybody’s hand. I knewwhen the guy bid 4 that he had 10 or 11 blackcards.”

Another famous Roth story centers on the 1955Bermuda Bowl. Playing against a team from GreatBritain, Roth found himself in a contract of 2. Af-ter the opening lead, he left the table and approachedthe tournament director, Al Sobel.

Said Roth: “I’ve played this hand before.”“Impossible,” Sobel said.Roth insisted, and finally Sobel said he would

throw out the deal if Roth could name all the spotcards in the other three hands. To everyone’s amaze-ment, Roth did just that. Interestingly, the first timeRoth played the deal he was defending against a1NT contract.

Stories like this, Roth says, help keep the inter-est of groups of aspiring players. Roth says he iswilling to lecture to any group, and he hopes he willhear from some units or districts. “I can create in-terest in players to get better,” he says. “I get themstimulated.”

(If you’re interested in having Roth lecture toyour group, he can be reached at 561-361-9029.)

I can tell I am going to enjoy the NABC

in Cincinnati. After all, who would not like tosee his name in the Daily Bulletin? When Iopened the Bulletin and checked “SpecialEvents,” I came across B, Regal (admittedlyslightly misspelled, but all publicity is goodpublicity, right?) half a dozen times.

I thought I must be the most felicitouslynamed player at the event – now I am not sosure. I looked at the list of NAP-A competi-tors, and noted that Ontario’s representativesincluded Brij Garg and John Diamond.

!The ACBL Laws Commission will

meet today from 10 a.m. to noon in theBoard of Governors Room on the fourthfloor of the Hyatt.

Martha McGhee, co-chair of the 1998 OrlandoNABC, was IN chairman at the 1992 NABC. Thisarticle appeared in the Daily Bulletin at that tour-nament.

Call the who ...? The Director! It’s okay to callthe director. If fact, if you don’t, you may lose yourright to call him later if you are damaged.

The director is the one who sold you an entry, the one who passed out the boards, the one whopassed out the hand records and said, “Duplicate, please.” The director is the one who organized theplayers and the boards so that everything runssmoothly at the right time, the right speed and theright direction.

The director is the one you need help from ifand when an irregularity happens at your table. Thedirector gives rulings pertaining to the “Laws ofDuplicate Contract Bridge.”

In order for the conditions of the game to befair, everyone has to follow the same rules. The di-rector is familiar with these rules and is responsiblefor seeing that they are correctly applied.

The director is also the one who calls the roundswhen it is time for you to meet your new opponents. The director puts the results of each board into thecomputer and posts the computer print-out of re-sults after each session.

When you need a director, raise your hand andcall out “Director, please” -- loudly enough for himto hear but not so loudly that it disturbs the otherplayers. When the director arrives at your table, hewill listen to what happened and explain to the play-ers the ruling that pertains to the irregularity.

Some rulings have several options, so if youdon’t understand them fully, don’t hesitate to askfor them to be repeated.

Since the conditions at each table must be du-plicated as much as possible, all the players mustadhere to the same set of rules. The director’s mainobjective is to make the game as fair as possible forall the players involved, while ensuring that every-one has an enjoyable time.

Irregularities that may happen at your table forwhich you must call the director: a lead out of turn,an insufficient bid, a revoke, a card missing from ahand, a bid or pass out of turn, failure to Alert anartificial bid, changes of call, disagreements of trickswon, claims with trumps outstanding or disputedclaims, bidding errors, etc.

The director is your friend. Do not hesitate tocall him or her. In fact, if you don’t call the Direc-tor, you may have lost the right to call him or herlater when you discover you have been damaged.

Southswitched to a spade to the jack and king, and Cham-bers knocked out the A. A club came back to South’sace, but now the situation was set up for a squeezeagainst North in spades and diamonds. With four tricksleft, Chambers still had three diamonds and a spade inher hand and two diamonds plus the A 10 in dummy.North couldn’t keep the high spade plus three dia-monds, so Chambers took the 10 tricks she planned totake.

She thought this would be a win, but it was a push– the same squeeze in a notrump contract occurred atthe other table. However, the half was enough – Cham-bers’ team won the event by half a point.
