Catalina Island Marine Institute• CIMI’s objectives

– Excite students about science

– Introduce students to the basic concept of marine and island ecology.

– Help students understand their role in the Earth’s ecosystems.

– Give students experience with new and different environments.

– Teach students to interact with animals and nature in a responsible manner.

– Provide experiences that will help students gain a lifelong appreciation for living organisms.

– Teach students to live and share in a group learning situation.

Location

• Catalina Island is located just 21 miles from Long Beach, California. The island is pristine with miles of beautiful coastline and great diving areas. It is a true example of nature’s own laboratory.

• The Catalina Island Marine Institute at ToyonBay is located on the front side of Catalina Island, two miles west of the city of Avalon.

Itinerary (subject to change)

Thursday, April 26, 2013• Meet at Booth-Fickett between 8:30pm & 8:45pm • Load busses at about 8:50pm• Bus departs at 9:00pmFriday, April 27, 2013• Bus arrives in Long Beach, CA at approx. 6am• Breakfast at McDonalds• Leave McDonalds at approx 7am• Arrive at Catalina Cruises Terminal, Queen Mary at approx 7:30• Check in with Catalina Cruises• Catalina Cruises leaves Long Beach at 9:30am• Arrive at Toyon Bay at approx. 11:30• Lunch at the Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI)• At institute rest of the day

The Program

• The CIMI program is composed of a series of three one-hour sessions. Sessions include a hike or lab experience.

– Topics discussed in labs include:

• Fish, shark, algae

• Plankton

• Marine mammals

• Oceanography

Payment Information Approximation

• Because we are still working with vendors, the price per student is unknown. However, to give you an idea, here is last years information:

Payment Information

• 2011 cost per student $420.00 • We will have a payment schedule. The first payment will be

around $140.00 and is nonrefundable. • You may choose to pay for trip as a tax credit. This is great

because you get this back when you pay your taxes.• Married couples may pay up to $400.00 dollars in tax credit.

Single, head of household may pay up to $200.00 in tax credit. • We will have at least 1 fundraiser this year. The fundraiser will be

determined and more information given at a later date. Fundraiser funds will be used to help pay chaperone costs and students who are in financial need.

• Please encourage friends and family to give Tax Credit Donations to help fund our club. We also accept scholarships.

Payment Schedule (based on 2011)

• Applications due by November 7, 2012

– Applications will be sent home with student once final costs are determined.

• First payment ($140.00 (tentative) and is non-refundable) due November 21, 2012.

• Second payment due January 9, 2012.

• Third payment due February 6, 2012.

• Final payment due March 19, 2012.

Meals

• All meals are set-up buffet style with a hot meal and a salad bar. Students will all come into the dining hall and sit at their designated tables and wait to be dismissed. After each meal a clean-up crew from each school will stay behind to clean all tables and sweep the floor.

Sample Menu

• Breakfast: pancakes and sausage or scrambled eggs and hash browns or sausage; fruit juice, milk. Fruit bar: cereal selection, yogurts, fresh fruit, various jams, Danish, bagels or English muffins.

• Lunch: pizza, hamburgers, corn-dogs or cold-cut sandwiches (one entrée per lunch) punch, water. Salad bar. Peanut butter and jelly.

• Dinner: lasagna (meat and veggie), turkey, chicken or Mexican (one entrée per dinner) , Salad bar, dessert

• Sample menu only-subject to change.

• PRIOR TO DEPARTURE LET US KNOW OF ANY SPECIAL FOOD NEEDS OR ALLERGIES!

PACKING FOR YOUR TRIP• Luggage is limited to two duffels or soft bags per

person.

• Be sure to mark all clothing before arrival on the island.

• Pack personal gear in a suitable container. Soft luggage or duffel bag is best. A larger backpack would work.

• We will mark out bags with ?(Color) duct tape tags. TBA

• Pack only the essentials! You must be able to carry all your own luggage. Our cabins are a distance from the boat unloading area.

• Old shirts and shorts

• Jeans or old pants

• Long sleeved shirt

• Raincoat or poncho

• Underwear and socks

• Bath towel

• Beach towel

• Warm sleeping bag

• Pillow

• Tennis shoes (good for hiking) and flip flops

• Personal hygiene items: – toothpaste, shampoo,

deodorant, etc.

• Water bottle

• Flashlight

• Sunscreen
