Following their California State Football Championship of 1919, LongBeach Poly declined to participate in the 1920 playoffs and instead

scheduled a game with Everett, Washington. Everett was considered to be

the Northwest Champion and the winner would play East Technical HighSchool of Cleveland, Ohio, for the United States High School FootballChampionship" The CIFSS had a rule against intersectional games and the

"Hares" would be suspended from CIFSS for one year because they wentahead and played the game. The game took place on Saturday afternoon,December 17, 1920, in new stands that could accommodate 15,000 on the

campus of the leigh school. It was said that the, "beach town had gone

seen...they brought down only l2 men for the game' had no time outs and

never had a water bucket on the field." The Evereft coach, Enoch Bagshaw,

who would later take many of his players and go on to coach the University

of Washingon, was quite a character. Faul Lowry of the "Los Angeles

Tirnes." wrote:"Coach Bagshaw spoiled the effect created by his team's

splendid showing by uabbing at the official's work every

time his team was penalized. His pet stunt was to rush over

to the press rovr, and shaking a trembling finger under a

Washington correspondent's nose, order him to 'send the

news to Everett that Everett had been penalized.'Bagshaw's team played college football, but his was

graflrmar school spirit."

The Everett team was led by Sherman and halfback George Wilson. Wilson

would become an All-American football player at the {Jniversity ofWashington and was named the greatest football player of the university's

first half century. Long Beach was led by future USC stars l-afay LeFebvre

and All-American Morely Drury. Long Beach could not do much during the

game against the aggressive Everett team and sportswriter Lowry was tough

in his report stating, "The long beach quarter (back) displayed punkjudgment in his choice of plays. . . "

On January 1,1921, Evereft would defeat the East Technical F{igh Schooi ofCleveland, Ohio by a score of l5-7 for the {Jnited States F{igh SchoolFootball title in a game played at Evereft"
