Intro of Chingay

• It is the largest street performance and float parade in Asia.

• From the main parade site to the heartlands, this street extravaganza epitomise the dynamism of Singapore's vibrant and multicultural society.

• The work Chingay is equivalent to the Mandarin zhuang yi (妆艺 ), which means "the art of costume and masquerade" in the Hokkien dialect.

• Chingay Colours of Fabric, One People 布海同心 , where age, race, language and creed are no barriers and we celebrate together as one.

• The different colored fabrics used by the performers shows the various types of people in Singapore.

• If we look closely, we can see that the performers are from different races in different ethnic costumes.

• As Singapore becomes more built-up, the continued planning for lush, landscaped spaces becomes all the more important as a relief from high-density, urban living.

• "Military Defence” is to "enhance Singapore's peace and security through deterrence and diplomacy.

• "Civil Defence" is about ensuring Singaporeans know what to do in times of an emergency

• "Economic Defence" is defined as maintaining the economy of the country and its ability to compete in the world.

• "Social Defence" is about keeping the social fabric strong and ensuring that Singaporeans live in harmony regardless of race or religion.

• "Psychological Defence" is about loyalty, commitment to Singapore, and having the will power and resilience to overcome challenges.

• During the British colonial rule, there are areas which are enclaves containing a large population of certain.

• Presently, remnants of the colonial ethnic concentration still exists but housing in Singapore is governed by the Ethnic Integration Policy.

Singapore Culture

• Singapore has a diverse populace of nearly 5 million people which is made up of Chinese, Malays, Indians, Caucasians and Eurasians (plus other mixed groups) and Asians of different origins, which is in line with the nation's history as a crossroads for various ethnic and racial groups.

Chinese

These two pictures show the traditional lion dance and dragon dance that the Chinese perform usually during the Chinese new year. There is also a picture where the prosperity god is waving to the crowd.

• Dragon dance is a form of traditional dance and performance in Chinese culture. The dance is performed by a team of dancers who manipulate a long flexible figure of a dragon using poles.

• Lion dance is a form of traditional dance in Chinese culture and other Asian countries, in which performers mimic a lion's movements in a lion costume.

• The Chinese believed that there are different traditions that they have to follow to have a prosperous year, can you name out most of the traditions?

• The Chinese culture in Singapore blends the cultural practices of the southern Chinese, local ethnicities and western influences.

This shows the traditional practices of the Malay culture, like its weddings and its ethnic costumes.

• Hari Raya Puasa is celebrated at the end of Ramadan, the fasting month of Ramadan.

• The majority of Malays in Singapore generally share a similar culture with those in Peninsular Malaysia.

• English is also widely spoken. Malay is still commonly used among Malays. However, there are some words in Malaysian Malay that are different from Singaporean Malay, do you know them?

The Indian culture has many different aspects and it is very colorful based on this picture.

• 55% of Singapore's ethnic Indians are Hindu, and there are roughly 30 Hindu temples in the country, with two gazetted as National Monuments of Singapore.

• Little India represents the heart of Indian shopping with its heady scent of spices and jasmine garlands, its treasure trove of silverware, brassware, ethnic jewellery and colourful silk saris.
