Activity Descriptions HCDG Accomplishment Report The Human Capital Development Group (HCDG) aims to produce globally competitive knowledge workers and an ICT‐skilled labor force. As such, the HCDG is responsible for initiating projects geared towards the advancement of relevant ICT skills in the Filipino people by developing ICT literacy and competency standards, by formulating plans to integrate ICT in education, and by championing efficient management and use of ICT in the civil service workforce to ensure an effective eGovernment for the country. To know more about the numerous projects that the HCDG is currently undertaking, the public is cordially invited to listen in on a talk introducing the varied initiatives the Group is leading. PCR Exhibit PC Recycling came about to empower selected high school by providing technical skills to maintain and sustain their existing laboratories by recycling defective computers. The main strategy of PC Recycling is to use salvageable computer parts to refurbish and restore defective units in order to maximize available resources and minimize electronic waste. By empowering the technical capability of their personnel, these schools can become better equipped to bridge the digital divide. To cap‐off this undertaking an a final national PC Recycling Exhibit will be conducted, showcasing posters depicting the learning process, samples of refurbished units, and other educational and creative work made from condemned computer parts. Kapihan: PC Maintenance, Recycling and eWaste Management With the passage of time, ICT equipment will gradually meet obselecense. This grim reality can adversely affect thousands of computer units currently populating the laboratories of the public school system. While the HCDG, through the PC Recycling Component of its iSchools Project has taken steps to address this situation, there is a realization that a lot more needs to be done. In light of this, the kapihan session on PC Maintenance, Recycling and eWaste Management is a concrete step in informing the public about this impending issue. Learning Objects The lecture features the construction of content of learning objects as a preliminary step to conversion, which in turn is the focus of the next lecture. Learning objects are best understood and used as stand alone lessons that can be used by various levels of learners in a non‐sequential manner. A learning object serves multiple purposes in the classroom as a supplemental instructional material (SIM), as a multimedia material categorized by the DepEd as among the OIMS, or even as the main lessonʹs content or at the least as a teacherʹs audio‐visual aid. It can be the modular ʹteacherʹ in class or the extension class‐either at advanced or remedial level or homework itself. A learning object can be authored by any teacher who uses a rapid instructional design format to enhance student interaction and engagement with the lesson and with peers. Learning Objects Development Using Xerte Online Toolkits Xerte Online Toolkits is a server‐based suite of tools for content authors. Elearning materials can be authored quickly and easily using browser‐based tools, with no programming required. Xerte Online Toolkits is aimed at content authors, who will assemble content using simple wizards. Content
authors can easily collaborate on projects. Xerte Online Toolktis can be extended by developers using Xerte. This session, which is to be led by iSchools Project consultant Reina Gagno‐Sison, is aimed at service and pre service teachers. iSchools Library Management and Information System (iLMIS) The iLMIS is an open source eLibrary software that systematizes library procedures electronically. It is now being introduced to many public schools nationwide. The iLMIS was formed through a partnership between the iSchools Project and developers from the Laguna University under the Laguna Provincial Government through its Management Information Systems (MIS) office. The iLMIS hopes to improve library management by providing school administrators with an ICT system that simplifies and makes more efficient the process of storing, cataloging, and filing learning materials. Eventually, the system will allow materials to be shared with other school libraries within the greater iLMIS network. The Laguna Provincial Government, through its MIS office, developed the system and software applications for its concurrent units such as the Laguna University. After the MIS office successfully developed a Library and Management Information System (LMIS) for Laguna University, it decided to popularize and distribute said software to organizations willing to adopt it. The iSchools Project has thus adopted and promoted the LMIS to its partners nationwide. POSNet Seminar Series Multimedia is one of the best tools used nowadays to keep us connected with each other. Most of us are afraid that these are hard to do and/or expensive to have. Avidemux, Audacity and GIMP are FOSS that can do the job and help anyone create the multimedia content they have. Avidemux is a simple, yet more than able editing tool, Audacity is an audio editor and GIMP is an image editor. The seminar/demo will go through each of the FOSS features as well as letting attendees do some simple editing using the tools. Lime Survey is a valuable tool for educator who would like to have electronic surveys to be conducted either it be for sampling purposes or gauging the effectivity of a program. Open Journal is a FOSS that basically is a document management system built for journals. The goal of the FOSS is to make journals available to more people anywhere in the world. Seminar would tackle real world applications of both FOSS as well as tips in how to maximize the FOSS. Moodle is widely considered as the de facto virtual learning environment FOSS. Deployed in more than 1500+ institutions here in the Philippines, Moodle provides teachers, students, parents and school administrators alike a platform that is free, easy to use and maintain and is built with the teach‐student in mind. POSNet will demo a sample institution running Moodle and will give attendees a chance to see the platform from the teacher and student standpoint. Simple tips will also be discussed for teacher who would like to have an eLearning format class.
