Mary Magdalene and the Easter People

In Eastertide we reflect on what it means to live as Christ’s Easter People, and I am reminded of the Facebook post of a vicar friend of mine in London, which read:

‘Tonight’s ‘heresy out of the blue’ from Lent group participant, “We don’t believe that Jesus really died, do we?” Me, trying not to fall off my chair, “Err, yes, I think we do.”’

Sometimes we find the incredible truth of the Easter story too much to believe. But then, if it weren’t too good to be true, it wouldn’t be worth believing in!

But for me, the ultimate truth is brought to us by Mary Magdalene. Despite having been a woman possessed by demons and oppressed by her patriarchal society, Mary Magdalene becomes the apostle to the apostles; for it was Mary Magdalene who was first at the empty tomb, the first to see the risen Jesus and hear his voice, and the first to proclaim to the world, ‘He is risen!’

But, though the Easter truth she brings should set us free, that doesn’t make it easy. In the last few weeks I have walked with good and faithful Christians, two of whom are mourning the loss of a beloved husband, and in one case a grandchild. And their story tells us that there will always be doubt and darkness and vulnerability. And that means that for all of us we need to learn the lesson of a young painter in 17th century Holland.

He stumbled through life, surrounding himself with wine, women, and song. And if you look at Rembrandt’s early self-portraits, you will find that they are the face of an indulgent young man. But things changed – he married, but he and his wife lost three of their four children quite young. And then his wife died too, and Rembrandt’s self-portraits, of which he did many, became full of dark depression. But then, in his later years, Rembrandt started to paint scenes from the New Testament. And if you look at them and you will see a life being transformed, for he began accept Jesus and the Easter message. Rembrandt gives us a painting of Mary Magdalene, contemplating her sin, but with a glowing light shining behind her – the light of forgiveness. And a painting of Peter tortured by his denials – but lifted up by the light from Jesus’ face. And a painting of Paul, where the one who had once persecuted believers now sits writing his grand epistles - and there is a warm light shining around his face. Rembrandt coming to Christ, then, gives us paintings that echo Mary Magdalene’s story – that the light shines in darkness and the darkness cannot put it out. All our lives are tinged, then, both with the darkness of the cross and also with the light of Christ. And thus we believe that in Christ all manner of things are possible, but only if we stop with Mary Magdalene by the empty tomb, and hear Jesus’ caring, challenging voice of truth.

Annual Parish Meeting will be held at 7.30 pm in the North Cerney Village Hall on Tuesday 10 May 2016 (followed by a Parish Council Meeting).

Saturday 21st May from 2-6 p.m. – ‘Salt Pictures and Savouries’ - art as you’ve never seen it before!

Those of you who have experienced the fun and satisfaction derived from attending Wendy’s Workshops will be delighted to hear that we have another one planned. Following on from Canvas and Canapes, Brushes and Bruschetta, and Coffee, Cake and Collage you will love Salt Pictures and Savouries! The effects achieved from using rock salt with inks and watercolours are incredible and by the end of the afternoon you will have at least one fabulous artwork worthy of framing. Contrary to common perception, these workshops are great for men too! Just £30 for the afternoon, to include all materials and refreshments. For more information or to book, call Denise on 831055 or email [email protected]. First come, first served of course as places usually go quickly.

At all my Parish Council meetings (I attend 7 in my ward) I have recently been asked about the following:

COXit on Thursday 25th February, Cotswold District Council revealed its proposal to consider creating a new unitary council based upon the existing boundaries of Cotswold and West oxfordshire District Councils. The proposal would see the two District Councils merged creating a Unitary Authority taking on many of the services Gloucestershire County Council currently provides. Concerns have been raised about the impact the move would have on public services particularly adult social care, children’s services, Gloucestershire Fire and rescue service, strategic transport and road repairs. several public bodies have also come out against the proposals including the NHS, Gloucestershire Police and the Police and Crime Commissioner, Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue service and the Local Enterprise Partnership.Key Dates: None of the dates are set in stone, however the key milestones below are likely:April – Feasibility study carried outJune/July/August – likely public consultationOctober – final bid submitted to government by Oxfordshire Vision GroupEarly 2017- decision from government

Parking in CirencesterNot sure if I should be confessing to this or not but I have recently joined the CDC “Parking Project Board” looking for a solution to the lack of parking spaces in Cirencester. The good news is that the Council are cracking on at a pace with some solutions and have committed resources and a sum of money to providing more parking in Cirencester. We are some way down a financial review and the town has already undergone an extensive and thorough assessment of demand, spaces available at certain times

of day and the future provision needed. A number of sites are being considered and I’m unable to say much more at this stage but it is extremely likely that we will be building a “decked” car park at the end of it all. I am also very keen to encourage more cycling around this area and we are also looking at ways that we can support this with better facilities for cyclists: proper bike locks ups, storage, showers at work, reducing potholes, cycle routes etc. as this is woefully poor.

I’d ask people to be patient though as this will take some time and it may appear as if nothing is happening. I can assure you it is.

Meanwhile, don’t forget you park for FREE in the CDC car park at weekends, it’s FREE after 3pm to park in the Brewery and Forum car parks every day and you can pay for your parking in any car park with MI Permit which gives you flexibility to pay by text/online. (see side of machines for initial details.)

LitterI’m running out of space to go into this at the moment but please, DON’T DROP LITTER or EVER THROW IT OUT OF YOUR CAR. If you see anyone doing it, then report them or get their number plate. I’ll have more to report on this next month hopefully.

Thank you as always for being so interested and connected in where we live, I definitely have the best Ward on the council.

Potholes! All drivers and cyclists will be all too painfully aware of the potholes on some of our roads. Each county councillor has a small pot of money to spend in their area on highways. I’ve reported in particular the road from Perrotts Brook to Woodmancote and have clubbed together with County Councillor Nigel Robbins to get the very bad parts of this road patched properly, using some of our highways cash. There are other bad spots too of course – I always report them when I see them, but you can do the same on freephone 08000 514514. If you see a bad stretch of road which goes unattended please let me know for North Cerney parish or Cllr Nigel Robbins for Bagendon parish.

our emails are [email protected] and [email protected]

I’m always here to help for other county council issues.

omScrubditch Care Farm News - May 2016

CARE FARM NEWs MAY240 UK farms are already adding nearly £30m to the rural economy and providing 300,000 health and social care placements every year. With support and recognition from policy makers, health commissioners and the farming sector, it is estimated that care farming could increase its value to nearly £90m and provide half a million sessions per year in health, social and educational care over the next five years. (Excerpt taken from Farming UK, from a study recently carried out by Care Farm UK)Farming Minister, George Eustice said: “Care Farming demonstrates the important contribution that connecting people with farming and the natural environment has on improving wellbeing, and it’s great to see that this is on the rise.” At last some recognition for all us Care Farmers….let’s hope we can get our Doctors on board now!

LAMBING!Lambing is well under way as I write this ….12 out 15 ewes have lambed…and we have a fairly even split between ewe and ram lambs. They have been slower this time, but all lambed themselves safely so far. There is so little grass at present, and I think that has had a bearing on the slow lambing. Let’s hope the cold wind drops, and we get more sun in between the rain! Last month Gerry and Alan (one of our loyal volunteers) took the two ewes we have been halter training on an outing to the National star College. They were holding a ‘transition’ event for their graduates. Two of our regular students helped out; leading ‘Alice’ round the garden, and showing off our bantam and chicks that went along for the ride! It was a thoroughly successful day, and was a good trial for another outing we have planned in May in Gloucester (see dates below)

PIG NEWsHazel and Perry have been happily getting along, and fingers crossed she is now pregnant. Sandy is going to be moved down the farrowing nursery next to the ducks next week, in readiness for her next litter at the end of April

PoULTRY NEWsWe have two lots of eggs in incubators at the moment ….we are hoping for some Vorwerk chicks, and lots of Burford Browns – at the end of April

EGGS FOR SALE!Eric and Pam are selling Duck Eggs for us at Rendcomb Post Office, and we have hens & duck eggs for sale here at the Care Farm

VEG BOXES!The students have been busy planting loads of vegetable seeds in the poly tunnel, so this sunny weather should bring them on quickly; ready to plant out after Easter. We are hoping to expand our veg box production this year, so do get in touch if you would be interested in one – small or large; every week or twice a month?

FEEL GOOD FARMING!This spring we are running some half day ‘Feel Good Farming’ sessions; giving people living with mental health problems the opportunity to spend time at the Care Farm. Care Farming is also referred to as Ecotherapy and evidence from ‘Mind’ concludes that “Ecotherapy has a role to play in building and supporting mental health, wellbeing and resilience; whilst also keeping us all healthy.”Look at our website for further information

GRoUP VIsITsWe have the local Cirencester Deaf Club coming for a group visit tomorrow, with their families. If you know any other group that would like to visit us to see the Care Farm and all our animals, do get in touch with Gerry.

It is shocking and saddening to learn that the male suicide rate in the UK is at its highest since 2001. With other statistics telling us that men are three times more likely to die by suicide than women, and suicide is the most common cause of death in men aged 20-45, it is more important than ever that men speak freely about mental health.

Men report feeling the weight of cultural restrictions when it comes to talking about mental illness. However, staying silent is not the same as being strong. With one in four of us experiencing a mental health problem at any given time, it’s certainly nothing to be embarrassed about. As well as making sure there are services and resources available to men at a time of need, families, friends and loved ones also have a big role to play in offering compassion, support, and a listening ear. services heal illness, but communities heal lives and churches have a significant opportunity to contribute.

If you are experiencing a mental health issue, or are concerned about the mental health of someone you know, there are some excellent sources of support and information available for you and your loved ones: • Your GP should be your first port of call for any health issue and can provide a

range of support and advice.• Let’s Talk is a free Gloucestershire NHS service offering information, guidance and

therapy during times when people feel stressed, anxious or depressed. Ring 0800 073 2200 or visit www.talk2gether.nhs.uk

• The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is a charity which looks to prevent male suicide in the UK: www.thecalmzone.net

• The Samaritans provide round-the-clock support. Visit their website at www.samaritans.org or call them on 116 123.

Heart attack when alone1. Let’s say it’s 7.25 pm and you’re going home (alone of course) after an unusually hard day on

the job.

2. You’re really tired, upset and frustrated.

3. suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to drag out into your arm and up in to your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home.

4. Unfortunately you don’t know if you’ll be able to make it that far.5. You have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course did not tell you how to

perform it on yourself.

6. HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE? since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.

7. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

8. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital.

9. Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives!!

10. A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this mail kindly sends it to 10 people, you can bet that we’ll save at least one life.

11. Rather than sending jokes, please ... contribute by forwarding this email which can save a person’s life....

12. If this message comes around to you more than once, please don’t get irritated - you need to be happy that you have many friends who care about you and for being reminded of how to tackle heart attacks.
