EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD APRIL 1, 2018 If we look at things from only a human perspective, we tend to say that man’s journey moves from life to death . . . Jesus turns this perspective upside down and states that our pilgrimage goes from death to life: the fullness of life! -Pope Francis Angelus, November 10, 2013

Christ is risen! Alleluia! Easter Sunday is the high point of the year for every Christian throughout the world. Darkness turns to light. Sadness turns to joy. Defeat turns to victory. Through Jesus Christ. The Resurrection of Christ is God’s definitive statement that Death does not have the final word and that God’s power is stronger than all things.
Sometimes, however, we’re deaf to that word. Our hearts are distracted by worldly concerns or overwhelmed by the sorrows of life, that we forget to see the light that shines in the darkness. It can be difficult to focus our hearts on the victory of the Resurrection.
When I was very young, I didn’t understand the meaning of Easter very well. I remember Easter coloring books that spoke nothing of the Resurrection of Christ. I remember images of the Easter Bunny, candy baskets and colorfully painted eggs. While these are nice traditions, they do little to comfort us when we consider the weight of our troubles in this life. As we get older, we realize that Easter is so much more than the promise of chocolate – it’s about the fulfillment of the promise that Jesus made us that He would rise from the dead. It’s the promise of life!
Matthew’s Gospel describes the fear that the women felt when they came to the tomb and found it empty. They didn’t know what to make of an empty tomb or the presence of an angel inside the tomb. They didn’t think that Jesus had risen from the dead. It had to be announced to them: “Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said” (Matthew 28:5-6). At times, when we are naturally inclined to react with fear and sorrow, we need the encouragement that only the Easter message can bring: “Jesus is alive! Don’t remain here in the tomb looking for Him, but go forth as He did into the world with joy and love and renewed hope!”
To acknowledge that Jesus rose from the dead is to proclaim that there is something more powerful than death. And it’s to proclaim that there is something more than just this life and its concerns. To acknowledge the hope of healing is to proclaim that our hearts are ruled by something more powerful than pain. We are ruled by Jesus Christ – and the power that allowed Him to conquer death is the same power that transforms us and gives hope in times of distress. To hope for anything in life without placing that hope in Christ is in vain.
I pray that you came to know that during these past forty days of Lent, whose disciplines and sacrifices brought with them their own amount of struggle and suffering. But we took them on so that we could offer them to God, who accepted them and transformed them. Now that we have arrived at Easter, we recognize that this is what God does through the course of all our hardships. He turns darkness into light, sorrow into joy, defeat into victory, and death into life.
The Church has much to be thankful for this Easter season. Foremost is that our Lord loved us enough to give His life and rise from the dead so that we might live in the eternal joy and consolation of His Heart. Each day may we live in a different way, so as to acknowledge that the Lord transforms our hearts and calls us to live as His disciples.
Are you new to the Churches of St. Mary & St. Henry? We are glad that you are with us! All you need to do to register is to stop in or call the parish office during office hours. We will be happy to help you. The registration form takes only a couple minutes to fill out. For your convenience these forms can be found in the church entrances and on our web page at www.stmarysthenry.org. For those of you that are registered and know of someone who is looking for a parish family, be an evangelizer and tell them how easy it was to join. We welcome our recently registered parishioners and look forward to getting to know you better. We ask all our parishioners that if you see someone at Mass that you do not know, do take the time to greet them and introduce yourself to them.

The Spring Hot Dish and Salad Luncheon was very successful. Again we received many compliments on our beautiful social hall, the variety of hot dishes and salads we had and our cheerful workers! Thank you to everyone who helped make the luncheon a success: The circle leaders, the families who donated food to the luncheon and the bake sale, the dining room and kitchen workers, and all who came to eat at the luncheon. Money is still coming in for the luncheon. We have $2137.00 from the luncheon and $266.00 from the craft and bake sale for a total of $2403.00. Again, thank you to everyone.
A reminder to anyone who would like to nominate someone or be willing to serve as a CCW officer. Please call Patti Germscheid or Jean Cemensky-Mohr.
The Southwest Deanery CCW Open meeting will be Thursday, April 12, 6:30PM, at St. Andrew's in Elysian. There are posters on the bulletin boards in the church entrances with more information. There is no cost for the event, but we need to RSVP by Monday, April 9. Please call Patti Germscheid at 357-6516, if you want to go. We can carpool from the church parking lot at 5:45PM.
At the time of a funeral for a CCW member, the CCW will say a rosary for the deceased member, if the family asks us to. We will say the rosary during the wake or before the funeral, whichever works the best. We also pay for a Mass to be offered for the deceased at a later date.
We are trying to make a list of members who would lead the rosary when the family asks us to say it. If you would be willing to lead the rosary at the wake or before the funeral, please call Patti at 357-6516 so we have a number of ladies to call. Thank you for your willingness to help!
