"Too many of God’s people don’t know God’s Word,

don’t really believe God’s Word or don’t ’do’ God’s

Word. Forty Days in the Word will transform people

from ’hearers’ to ’doers.’" - Pastor Rick Warren

40 Days in the Word is a church wide spiritual

growth campaign. In weekly small group studies

and in Sunday morning messages we will exam-

ine six principles of the Word of God. Together at

Central Baptist Church we will explore the au-

thenticity, reliability, power, comfort, interpreta-

tion and doing of God’s Word. There are literally

thousands of verses about the Bible in the Bible.

We will look at hundreds of those verses in this

six week process.

What are the goals of this campaign?

LOVE THE WORD.

LEARN THE WORD.

LIVE THE WORD.

What are the components of

40 Days in the Word?

S M A L L G R O U P S T U D I E S

The core component of this spiritual growth

campaign will help you learn methods of how to

study and interpret God’s Word with 6 small

group sessions on DVD. Small groups will meet

throughout the week and at various locations in

the Alameda/East Bay area. We will help you

find a group that meets at a convenient time and

location. Several of you have already volun-

teered to host small group meetings. More of

you will volunteer in February to host a group.

No special skills are necessary! You can do it!

Small groups can meet any time during the

week, except at 10:30 Sunday morning.

Valentine’s Day is a time when many

people celebrate love, particularly romantic

love. In recent years, however, people have

taken the opportunity to express other kinds of

love on Valentine’s Day – family love between

parents and children, and love between friends.

Today, children even have a classroom party

at school, put Valentines into a decorated box,

and then distribute cards to each other. Hus-

bands still give flowers, candy or perfume to

their wives. People today send millions of Val-

entine’s Day cards in the U.S. each year, the

number second only to that of Christmas cards

sold and sent.

As Christians, we realize that “God is love” 1

John 4:16 and that He models unconditional,

perfect love, loving us long before we first love

Him and loving us so much that He sent His

Son to die for us. Valentine’s Day is a reminder

to us that the Author of all love is God Himself.

As you celebrate Valentine’s Day this year,

why not share love with those who need love:

the forgotten senior in a nursing home, a shut-

in, or a lonely child? Send a thank-you note or

a cheerful thought to a teacher or friend who

has challenged you in your personal walk with

Christ or enriched your life.

Most importantly, tell God how much you

love Him and then demonstrate the depths of

that love to others by being faithful to the call

He has placed upon your life.

Have a blessed Valentine’s Day

Sherrie and the Preschool Ministry

Wednesday night and Thursday night meetings

are already scheduled. If there is a time when

you and at least two or three others want to meet

we will make sure you have the materials you

need.

Pastor Stephen will preach 6 sermons on the

principles of the Word that will be studied in the

small groups. The messages will build confi-

dence in the reliability of God’s Word. The

morning worship music will not be exclusively

related to the campaign, but there will be a focus

each week on the Word.

You will develop Biblical literacy and Biblical

obedience to God’s Word. Practical projects can

be done as individuals or with your small group.

Daily devotionals and Scripture memorization

will be available for every participant. You will

have access to 40 daily video devotions from

outstanding pastors from across America and 40

written daily devotionals. A reading plan will be

provided for each one to follow after the cam-

paign ends. We want to continue the habits that

build an eternal devotion to God’s Word.

The last Sunday message for 40 Days in the

Word will be April 1. The final week of small

groups will be the week of April 1. Then the

next Sunday is Easter! Begin praying that the

Lord Jesus will work in a mighty way through

those 40 days and that Easter Sunday will be a

spectacular celebration of His resurrection

power!

“When we come to a clearer and more sober estimate of our own limitations and responsi-bilities, that makes it possible more genuinely to love our neighbor." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer in "Letters and Papers from Prison"

Mummy Heart Failure The heart is used as a symbol for love – but our physical heart’s health is impor-tant, too. Sometimes our moral – or im-moral – actions affect our heart health. Check out this story. An archaeologist was digging in the Negev Desert in Israel and came upon a casket containing a mummy. After examining it, he called the curator of a prestigious natu-ral-history museum. "I've just discovered a 3,000 year-old mummy of a man who died of heart fail-ure!" the excited scientist exclaimed. To which the curator replied, "Bring him in. We'll check it out." A week later, the amazed curator called the archaeologist. "You were right about the mummy's age and cause of death. How in the world did you know?"

"Easy. There was a gambling receipt in his

hand that said, ‘10,000 Shekels on Goli-

ath'."
