DearBrothersandSistersinChrist,
Aswecelebratethesummer,churchlifetakesonaslightlydifferentrhythm.Sometravel.Somereconnectwithfamilyandfriendsfromnearandfarindifferentways. Somealsoareopentotryingnewthings,like
returningtochurchorjoiningtheirfamiliesforchurchagainastheyvisit.
WeknowthatGodremainspartofourlives,evenwhenourscheduleschange. Evenifwesleeplate,whenwewakeupwecanthankGodforourblessingsandofferourprayers. Wecanpausetorecognizehiminnaturalbeauty. Wecanalsofindwaysofintentionallymakinghimpartofourvacationbyplayingreligiousmusicforabitduringalongdrive,byvisitingachurchwhenweareinadifferentcommunity,orbygatheringthefamilytogetheronthebeachtorecognizeGodinthesandandwater.
Blessingsonanytravelyouaretakingthissummer,andmayyoufindtimesandplaceswhereyoufindGodparticularlyatwork.

temperatureandhumidity,makingthesoundsharperandthuschangingthewayitvibratesandmakessound. Talkaboutadoublewhammy!Althoughthewholeorganwilltendtogosharperenmasse-itdoesn’tmoveperfectlyuniformlyaseverysinglepipeactsalittlebitdifferently.Thereisalsovariationineachclassofpipes,asthesweetersoundingflue’schangeinadifferentwaythanthereeds(thetrumpetsandhorns).That’swhyIavoidusingthemtogetheratthistime.Worse--theconstantexpansionduringtheheatofdayandcontractionintheeveningsdoesnopartoftheorgananygood.
So,untilwecangetamoreuniformsanctuaryenvironment,thiswillalwayshappen. Thisisalsowhywehavetotuneatleasttwiceayear.AndnowyouknowwhyI’mplayingmorepiano!

ThursdayAugust4th andFridayAugust5th.ThiswillbeanalldayVBS,runningfrom 9:00a.m.to4:00p.m.Breakfastandlunchwillbeprovided. AftertheendofVBS onFriday,therewillbeashortprogrambythekids,withacookoutdinnerforthemandtheirfamilies.
Ourthemethisyearis Good News! VBSisopento ALL kidsfromages3(pottytrained,please)tokidswhojustcompleted6th grade.Registrationformscanbefoundintheloungeandinthechurchoffice.CompletedformscanbegiventoAmyClark,KatherineHuff,LauraPeretic,orleftwithTinainthechurchoffice.

I’mwonderingwhoelseisamazedhowquicklythesummertimehasembracedusall. Oneminuteyou’reclearingawayweeds,preparingthe
earth,plantinglittleflowersandthenextitseemsyouaresecondguessingwhethertobracea90˚daytowaterthoseflowersyetagain. OhyouknowtheonesI’mtalkingabout,theyaretallandgorgeousintheearlymorning,raiseduptothesunlightinfullvigor,butbymid-afternoon,theylookliketheydesperatelyneedadrink,wiltingunderthepowerfulraysofastrongsun.Livingthingsrespondtoheat,coolandhumidityindifferentways.
Youmaynothavethoughtaboutit,butourveryownSchantzPipeOrganalsobehaveslikealivingthinginamannerofspeaking. Yousee,thelasttimeshewastunedwastheweekbeforeEaster. Theoutsidetemperaturewasrangingfrom30to50˚,soIhadtoturntheheatersoninthesanctuarytotrytobringthetempuptooperational.Thisissothatallthecomponents,themetalpipes,eventhewoodenpartswereallaboutwheretheywouldbeduringservices.Rightnow,thesanctuaryisalmost80˚.That’sabigdifference!
Yousee,metal(evenwoodtosomeextent)expandsandcontractswithtemperaturevariations.Whodoesn’thaveadoorthatstickseverysummerwhenthehumidityrisestodog-daylevels?There’sanothervariable. Althoughtheflowertopipeorgananalogyisn’tthebest,theybothrespondtoenvironmentalchanges.Flowerswilt.PipeOrgansgooutoftune.
Soifyou’vebeennoticingtheorgansoundingweirderthesepastweeks,it’sbecausethepipeshaveexpandedandlengthened,makingthesoundflatter,buttheveryairthatispassingthroughthemhasalsoincreasedin
