FROM THE VICAR: ABOUFROM THE VICAR: ABOUFROM THE VICAR: ABOUFROM THE VICAR: ABOUT THE FUTURT THE FUTURT THE FUTURT THE FUTUREEEE

Dear Friends,

After 15 hard and productive years of growth, Shatin Church has become a vibrant

fellowship, and it is very important we ensure that the future pastoral leadership of the

church is God’s appointment, to lead you forward in the next chapter of your life. Therefore I and the Trustees of St Andrew’s Church (Mr Ronny To and Mrs Nancy Chu)

will meet with the Committee soon to begin the process for selecting a new minister. I

expect it will go like this:

1. Shatin Church will do a review of itself – what sort of church are we, where are we heading?

2. Church committee will elect three members to a search committee, with 2

Trustees and Vicar

3. Search committee will prepare a profile of church and criteria for new minister

4. Ads placed, applications assessed and interviews undertaken 5. Search committee recommends appointment to Vicar

6. Vicar, with Bishop’s approval, makes appointment.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask your committee or me. In the

meantime I will ensure we have plenty of opportunities to pray and consult together. We want not only the appointment, but the means of appointment to be glorifying to

God.

Yours in Christ Service, John Menear, Vicar – St Andrew’s Church

PRAYER MEETINGPRAYER MEETINGPRAYER MEETINGPRAYER MEETING

Dear Sha Tin Church,

Please let's get together to pray for our new pastor, and the pastor search rocess,

in love and unity. Here is our prayer meeting schedule which restarts again from Sunday:

February 4, Febuary 11, Febuary 25, March 4

The prayer meeting is held downstairs in Room G09 from 12:30 sharp for about

15 minutes.

Here is the prayer that we can pray every day for our church and our new pastor: A Prayer for Shatin Church

Almighty God, our heavenly Father,

We thank you for all your blessings showered upon Shatin Church for over 15 years.

We thank you for calling us together in fellowship,

and forming us into the body of Christ.

We pray for the search for a new minister.

We ask that you will send us a pastor who will be led by your Spirit,

who will preach the Word,

who will be a shepherd who cares for us, and an example we may follow.

We pray for the search group that you will guide them in unity and wisdom.

And we ask that you will bind us together in faith and love

as we wait for the person of your choice to come.

We ask this din the name of Jesus our Lord

Amen.

The Ladies Bible study new series: Spiritual Authenticity by Carol Kent. "Few people set out to be fake. In an age in which public facades are the norm, the

courage to be genuine is highly prized. As believers, we long to consistently be the

people we sing aobut being on Sunday. In this study we will be using the life of Christ

as our model, we'll learn ways in which we are not yet as real as we could be." Come and join us for this transformational study, prayer and wonderful fellowship.

OUR GIVING

GENERATION MINISTRIEGENERATION MINISTRIEGENERATION MINISTRIEGENERATION MINISTRIESSSS

Dear friends,

We have arrived home in New Zealand feeling tired. 10 countries in 10 weeks, 21 flights, 20 trips to the airport, and no days off in the last month has been quite an undertaking. However the sense of satisfaction and joy at what God has done through our Ministry more than makes up for the small sacrifices we have made. In comparison to what the people go through for the sake of the gospel in the nations we visit it is a small price to pay.

Hear and obey: I must say though I identified with the apostle Paul by the time I got on the aeroplane to return home -- when he said I have been "poured out like a drink offering". I felt rather like that myself. The few days prior to that had been a lesson in listening to the Lord and being ready to obey. In Singapore we had excellent leaders meetings where a new structure and vision team for World Outreach was decided upon. Anyway early one morning I got the distinct impression that I needed to make plans to visit Vietnam prior to returning home. After some flurry regarding visas and ticketing etc that all worked out and we had very useful meetings over the weekend with our team. It was timely and they appreciated it very much because they had got a little bogged down and decisions needed to be made.

Then sitting on the plane and happily relaxing with an excellent newspaper for the first time for weeks this pleasant guy sat down next to me. All I want to do was bury myself in the newspaper and free movies. But I sensed the Lord was saying that I should talk to him -- the upshot was a three-hour discussion revolving around spirituality and the Lord. He is very keen on yoga and seeking truth and ended up saying enthusiastically that he really wanted to know more about Jesus and his life and teaching -- he said he believes he will find the answers he has been seeking for years. Please pray for Paulus from Portugal and London.

Egypt: the annual conference for children's workers was excellent. We had people from last year as well as many new folks so we taught a range of new topics. The testimonies at the end included one young man saying, "the most important thing I learnt was that I needed to preach the gospel to children because they can the born-again." This happens time and time again in our seminars and is the core of what we are communicating. Spiritual growth can only come after there is spiritual birth. One dynamic lady told us how her ministry has been transformed since attending our training and she visited many places to train teachers and introduce them to our materials. As our seminar banner in India said: "the gift goes on". May this message result in millions of children becoming new creations in Christ. It was a challenge to teach new topics and meet the needs of people at different stages of Ministry skill -- but they were all well received. We prayed for many people to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Catholic church contact. We also taught a 2 evening seminar for an evangelical Catholic Ministry team -- that went well and they want to have us back again.

Lebanon: getting there was exciting but the Ministry was even more exciting. Major civil unrest broke out in Beirut nine days before our arrival. 10 people were killed in cross faction fighting and over 100 taken to hospital with bullet wounds. From the Civil War days there are still five or six major factions who hate each other, with the Hezbollah Islamic fighters in the middle of the mix trying to bring down the government. The country is teetering on the brink of returning to Civil War and people are very tense. Two days after the rioting there was an second day of violence which began at the University. They closed all schools and universities and leaders of the different factions called for calm. We were of course praying for God's guidance and both Bev and I had a real peace that we would be able to go safely into the situation. We were not too fazed at the thought of possibly being stuck there for a while if the airport road was again closed . We were praying for a specific scripture whether to postpone. I had a clear versus, "do not withhold good things from people when you can give to them and tell them you will do it later!". Then our final day for making a decision Bev's first verse for the day was, "leave Egypt and go North!" So we were very confident that all would be well.

When we arrived all burnt out vehicles etc had been cleared away and the city looked quite normal until we saw the first Army tanks and armoured cars with large guns pointing down the various suburban streets. That did give us a sense of security and we went to see the city centre and drove past the Hezbollah protesters who are camped in protest around the parliament building. Roles of barbed wire and army personnel guard all the key buildings. After a quick search of our bags we could stroll around the beautiful Piazza in the middle of Beirut which was totally deserted. The economy is collapsing because no tourists are coming and people are very reluctant to invest.

Training: We had 46 children's Ministry workers come to the conference and they were really thrilled with what they received and what they learnt. Some of the Syrian Orthodox teachers received the Lord. Many said how surprised they were that they personally received so much through the Ministry themselves. Our hosts Graeme and Rosemary Wallis from NZ had done a great job advertising and so 16 different churches and ministries were represented. They said it was the best conference they'd had in their time in Lebanon. Our Egypt Director Nathan Bassally not only did a lot of translation for us but also touched their hearts deeply with his 2 messages on forgiveness and reconciliation and being and encourager.

A couple of testimonies: "My life was impacted in a huge way because before coming here I was very lost, and I needed to hear topics like the ones you explained and the prayers to have Jesus in my heart more and more each day."

"First thing that impacted my life is to meet these brothers and sisters who came from a far place and give their time fully to serve Jesus and to show love to do ministry, love to help children, and to go place to place without complaining. Their beautiful smiles and peace in their lives affected me too much and their relying upon the heavenly Father and their commitment to serve and love him deeply from the heart."

The churches are keen to have a follow up seminar next year.

Project: we have full cooperation and a team to begin producing the "Grow up with Jesus" curriculum in Arabic. Training will take place later in the year with people coming from other Arabic speaking nations to Egypt. Please pray for excellent translations and all the finances to come in.

Thank you for praying for us as we travelled. It has been an excellent and worthwhile missionary journey.

Lots love, Peter and Bev van

PS Bev had a wonderful week in London to end. Nic and Cal helped to pay most of the cost to fly from Cairo.
