SEPTEMBER 2016 Church of the Ascension 13216 Detroit Avenue • Lakewood, OH 44107 • www.ascension-lakewood.org Spires By God’s grace and your ministry, I begin my fourth year with you as your priest on the first of September. The Epistle for the first Sunday of this month includes these words, “When I remember you in my prayers, I always thank my God because I hear of your love for all the saints and your faith toward the Lord Jesus. I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective when you perceive all the good that we may do for Christ. I have indeed received much joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you…” These words convey my own sentiments for you. I continue to be moved by your generosity of spirit and your willingness to be ministers of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We enter the month with a lot of opportunities to continue with that ministry. On Sunday September 4th the choir is back, we resume Sunday School and Adult Formation. We always need voices to glorify God through music, adults to help with Sunday School and people to share their own faith in Adult Formation. Please be sure you are connected beyond worship if you are able. If you are unsure how you might serve please have a conversation with me. It truly takes a village to be the Church and all are needed and wanted. We have our final two Frankfurter Fridays on September 2nd and 16th. On the 16th we will extend serving hot dogs until 7:30 pm and show a movie out on the lawn at 8 pm. If weather is bad we will show the movie in Strom Hall. The movie is “Home” and it is a great movie for all ages. Please come and bring your friends and family. On September 18th we will have one service at 10:30 am followed by lunch, a concert, and we will end the afternoon with desert at 2 pm. Again, please spread the word and come with lots of people! There will be no adult formation on that day. This has been a busy summer, and it’s hard to believe it’s nearly over. I apologize for missing the last two Senior Warden’s reports. It’s been a hot summer, and I’m sure we all appreciate the A/C at Ascension.
We’re into our fourth year of Frankfurter Fridays and the turnouts have been great! We would welcome new faces in assisting us though, as us old timers are getting worn out.
The Summer Lunch programs have also been very successful, with an average of 11 kids almost every day. Our thanks to all involved in assisting, and to Margie Hildebrandt for coordinating the program. Hope you all noticed the new banners; our thanks to Corky Thacker.
While you’re at it, check out Undercroft, all set up for our new tenant – the Lakewood Montessori School. Ascension is getting to be a busy place, what with the Montessori School, six Twelve-Step meetings, the North Coast Men’s Chorus, and come fall, EFM classes. We’re putting the old building to work, aren’t we?
Now on the down side. We’ve lost Allie Thompson, who has gone off to Vanderbilt to continue her education, and Noah Sutter, who is starting seminary in Chicago. Noah and Allie were two of the original Intentional Community of Young Adults who moved into Ascension House three years ago.
Attendance has been fairly steady during the summer months, and we hope to see some new faces this fall.
Until then, best wishes for what’s left of the summer.
Sincerely,
Gil Newlands Senior Warden

We have our community meals on the second Thursday and last Monday of the Month. The grounds can always use someone to go around and pick up trash or weed. We have our book club on the last Tuesday of the month at 6 pm followed by Taizé at 7:30 pm.
On Sunday September 25 we will commission Steve Ashby to begin seminary and his internship at Christ Church in Oberlin. Steve will continue to live in Ascension House but, we will no longer have him with us on Sundays and at most parish functions. Please be sure to send Steve off with our prayers and presence.
And we will have our first youth group meeting on the last Thursday of the month, September 29th for all youth in grades 6-12 from 6-7:30pm. Pizza will be served!
“Praise God from whom all blessings flow.” A lot going on and a lot of ways to be blessings to each other.

September 30 – October 2, 2016
Diocesan Youth Event
St. Michael’s in the Hills 4718 Brittany Road
Toledo, Ohio
This event will help youth look beyond the exterior, to be awake and aware of their surroundings using that awareness to shine Jesus’ light in their place in the world. On Friday evening, a local magician will provide entertainment as well as an interactive magic class. Youth will participate in activities throughout the weekend that showcase that perception is not always reality. The weekend will conclude with a visit from Bishop Hollingsworth and Sunday worship.
