THE HIGHEST LAW From time to time, newspapers and magazines will offer, as an item of “filler,” various laws that are still on the books but seem silly to us in our day and age. In one California city, it is illegal to have two in-door bathtubs in one house. Clean water, a precious

commodity when the law was written, is now readily availa-ble, so the law seems silly. But the human value of protect-ing and preserving precious resources is still around, evident in many conservation laws that seem sensible to us. So it is with the laws of religious tradition. What Jesus scorns today is others’ attitude toward ritual laws, an attitude that be-comes nearly idolatrous when laws are observed for their own sake. Jesus teaches that observation of external ritual laws is of value only when they are emblems of our internal disposition toward the will of God. Our whole lives must follow the one ultimate law of God: to love God completely and to love neighbor entirely. Roman Catholicism is a tradi-tion rich with customs, traditions, and even laws. As we continue to listen to the voice of Christ, we must always look into our own hearts and underneath our ritual practices to make sure that love of God and love of neighbor are what we prize above all.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Looking for something out of this world?

Something with a longer and deeper view of yourself, your family, your job,

the world in which we live? Something?

Some ONE to believe in? Something MORE?

RCIA speaks to the hearts of adults who may be considering or re-considering the Catholic Faith. Perhaps you were raised in a different faith tradition or were baptized a Catho-lic but never received the rest of the Sacraments; perhaps you come from no faith tradition at all. RCIA is a journey of inquiry that explores the Catholic Faith. We will meet weekly in a group setting to learn about the Lord; who God is and who He is inviting us to be. We do this from within the Annunciation Parish community which provides com-panionship, support and witness. You are most welcome to join us. If you are interested in knowing more about the program please call the Parish Office at 973-694-5700.

Serving in Our Military With gratitude, we remember our veterans and we also pray for the safe return of our loved ones who now serve us faithful-ly both here and in foreign lands. As a visible reminder of their sacrifice and our love, we would like to begin publishing a prayer list of the men and women who are actively serving. This list will be published regularly in the bulletin. If you wish to include a family member who is actively serv-ing in the military, please call the Parish Office at 973-694-5700 and provide us with the individuals name and rank. You may also email the information to [email protected]. Please keep in your prayers ~CPL Axsel Consten, Marine ~Chastity Consten, Air Force ~Staff Sgt.
