The Liturgy of the Word

First Reading Book of the Prophet Jeremiah

Jeremiah said: “I hear the whisperings of many: ‘Terror on every side! Denounce! let us denounce him!’ All those who were my friends are on the watch for any misstep of mine. ‘Perhaps he will be trapped; then we can prevail, and take our vengeance on him.’ But the LORD is with me, like a mighty champion: my persecutors will stumble, they will not triumph. In their failure they will be put to utter shame, to lasting, unforgettable confusion. O LORD of hosts, you who test the just, who probe mind and heart, let me witness the vengeance you take on them, for to you I have entrusted my cause. Sing to the LORD, praise the LORD, for he has rescued the life of the poor from the power of the wicked!”

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm Lord, in your great love, answer me.

Second Reading Letter of St. Paul to the Romans

Brothers and sisters: Through one man sin entered the world, and through sin, death, and thus death came to all men, inasmuch as all sinned—for up to the time of the law, sin was in the world, though sin is not accounted when there is no law. But death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who did not sin after the pattern of the trespass of Adam, who is the type of the one who was to come.

But the gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, how much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one man Jesus Christ overflow for the many.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel The holy Gospel according to Matthew

Jesus said to the Twelve: “Fear no one. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are count-ed. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Everyone who acknowledges me be-fore others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

REFLECTION: Can you identify with Jeremiah? Do you feel overburdened by responsibilities, or that your good deeds are misunderstood even by those closest to you? Do you sometimes want to shake your fist at God and shout, "What have you gotten me into?!" If you do, Jere-miah will stand with you and encourage you because that’s the way he felt. However, he has more to say. Notice how his lament shifts – he turns to the God, who called him and to whom Jeremiah first said, "Yes." He prays a prayer of thanksgiv-ing. How bold he is! He is anticipating God’s coming to help him even before he has proof of it. That’s "Jeremiah-faith."

So we ask ourselves:

Have you ever prayed a prayer of complaint to God because of what was happening in your life?

How did it feel to pray so boldly? And how did you feel after you prayed that way?

Catechists Needed for PREP The Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) at St. William’s is seeking Catechists for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year. This is a wonderful opportunity to help prepare the students for their sacraments. Volunteers must be a practicing Catholic and have completed all their sacraments. You will also be asked to acquire clearanc-es. If interested, please call the rectory at 215-745-1389.

FOCUS: God knows even the hairs on our heads—we need not be afraid of anything.

Jesus exhorts: Do not be afraid. Do not be afraid. Do not be afraid. He call us to proclaim his words on the house-tops. We know that we are never left alone, and that through God’s care and the help of the Holy Spirit we can testify to him by whose death and resurrection we are saved. Courage is a gift of the Holy Spirit.

LITURGY OF THE WORD: Jeremiah the prophet, prais-es the Lord in the midst of terror and persecution, trusting God’s power to save. In his Letter to the Romans, Paul teaches that death came through Adam’s sin, but Jesus brings the grace of God as a gift. In the Gospel, Jesus encourages the Twelve to not be afraid, even un-der persecution, trusting their Father who counts even the hairs on their heads.

Prayer for Dads

God our Father, we give you thanks and praise for fathers young and old. We pray for young fathers,

newly embracing their vocation; may they find courage and perseverance

to balance work, family and faith in joy and sacrifice.

We pray for our own fathers around the world whose children are lost or suffering;

may they know that the God of compassion walks with them in their sorrow.

We pray for men who are not fathers but still mentor and guide us with fatherly love and advice.

We remember fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers who are no longer with us

but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love.

Amen.

I am with you always to the very end of the age.

We are never really alone. It can be difficult to remember that at times, especially when we are isolated from every-one and everything.

A recent article from Franciscan Media reminded us of the importance of the communion of saints. It tells us of the final hours of St. Clare of Assisi, and how the veil be-tween the world we know and the world that comes after was lifted from her eyes. She saw before her a multitude of holy figures who had arrived to welcome her home to God. While we fear the loss of our loved ones during these days of quarantine, the idea that they might pass while alone has been a frightening spectre compounding our fear, but we must remember our professed belief from the Apostle’s Creed. The communion of saints is for all of us, not just our most holy figures; those who passed their final hours in a seemingly empty room were never alone, just as none of us will be when our time comes.

DOMINGO, JUNIO 21, 202O DOMINGO 12, TIEMPO ORDINARIO
