JOHN THE BAPTIST At a school open house a woman could be overheard introducing her husband to some of the other parents. “Oh, Bill, I’d like you to meet Johnny’s father. And over here, this is Marie’s mom; you know, the little girl from our Ellen’s soccer team.” With satisfied resignation Bill introduced himself not by name: “I’m Ellen’s Dad.” It’s good to know who you are. Be it someone’s father or mother, son or daughter, husband or wife, it’s important to embrace the full meaning of our various roles. John the Baptist knows who he is. And who he is not. He is not the Christ. Nor Elijah. Nor like any other prophet God’s people had ever seen. John the Baptist knows his mission is divine. Dear Parishioners, CHRISTMAS EVE MASSES ... RESERVATIONS NEEDED … Because of the continuing pandemic, we will be adding a 6:30 pm Mass, to our regularly scheduled 9:00pm Mass on Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24. The 6:30 pm Mass will be held in the Auditorium and the 9:00 Mass will be held in the church. Both Masses will be bilingual. Unfortunately, both the Adult Choir and Children’s Choir will not be performing on Christmas Eve. YOU MUST REGISTER BY DECEMBER 18. TICKETS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED BEGINNING DECEMBER 19 AFTER THE 5:30PM MASS, AND AFTER ALL SUNDAY MASSES. AFTERWARDS TICKETS MAY BE PICKED UP IN THE RECTORY UNTIL DECEMBER 23. RECONCILIATION MONDAY ... Monday, December 21 from 4 pm - 8 pm in the lower church. PREPARE FOR THE COMING OF THE KING … Advent is a time of expectation as we prepare ourselves for the coming of our King and Lord, Jesus Christ. He came to us in a way no one expected, as a little baby. We are asked to ready ourselves each year for the arrival of the Christ Child. Similar to the Lenten season we prepare ourselves by prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We strengthen our relationship with our God by increasing our prayer. We deny ourselves certain goods (fasting) and are more generous with the good gifts God has blessed us with (almsgiving) keeping in mind, at all times, the preferential option for the poor as we seek to help those without, most of all. We also take the time to confess our sins, so the Lord may forgive us and sanctify us, cleansing our souls as we await to celebrate the birth of our Lord with hearts made pure. MASS SCHEDULE ... To make sure we can maintain social distancing, the 9 AM, 10:30 AM and 12 Noon Mass on Sundays will be held in the Auditorium. Be sure to enter on Purdy Street. The Masses on Saturday at 5:30 pm and Sunday at 7:30 am will continue to be celebrated in the church. Some of the following events and groups have been delayed, or the meetings are suspended, due to pandemic precautions. Hopefully, we will begin to offer all these ministries soon. RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION … Just a reminder that we ask that you preferably receive Holy Communion in your hands, by holding out both hands one on top of the other. Also remember that the proper response to the priest before receiving Holy Communion is “Amen,” not “Thank you.” BAPTISMS … all Catholics should be baptized … parents should be registered in the parish and attending weekly Sunday Mass in order to have the child baptized … godparents must be practicing Catholics who have received the sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation and, if married, married in the church … godparents must be members of a parish and must be attending weekly Mass … if you are going to be a godparent, it makes perfect and reasonable sense that you are practicing the faith and that you are a model for the child. SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY ... the Catholic Church teaches that marriage is between a man and a woman, a sign of LOVE and LIFE ... Catholics should be married in the church and, if married only civilly, should speak to one of the priests about receiving the sacrament in the Church (called convalidation) ... please know that you are welcome to ask questions and to receive direction and advice about the SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY … Please remember to secure a date for your wedding before making any arrangements with caterers, limo drivers, family and friends. FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS … the usual practice for Catholic burials is a wake service in a funeral home, a Funeral Mass in the parish church, burial of the body or cremains in a cemetery (preferably a Catholic cemetery) … speak with one of the priests for assistance before a death occurs and speak with a reputable funeral home director about pre-arrangements … cremains (ashes) are held in the same reverence and respect as a body and so they should be treated carefully, respectfully, reverentially and buried as soon as possible after cremation. PARISH REGISTRATION … all members of the parish should be registered and receive parish mailings and envelopes … if you are an adult (18 years and older), you should register to receive the envelopes and other information from the parish … you need to be registered in order to receive recommendation letters, financial statements, tuition rates and other parish related issues … HOW TO REGISTER? Come to the rectory office on Castle Hill Ave. LATE FOR CHURCH? … Why? Please resolve to arrive early for Mass, say a prayer, read the Scripture and be ready when we start it will make the Mass more prayerful and meaningful for all. Remember, if you miss the readings, you miss the teachings of Christ. St. Jerome wrote, “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” Getting to Church on time matters. VISITING OF THE SICK OR HOMEBOUND … If you know of anyone who is sick or homebound and would like to receive communion, Please call the rectory to give us your information as well as the information of the person who wishes to receive communion. They must reside in our parish area.

Fortalecemos nuestra relación con nuestro Dios al aumentar nuestra oración. Nos negamos ciertos bienes (ayuno) y somos más generosos con los buenos dones que Dios nos ha bendecido con (limosna) teniendo en cuenta, en todo momento, la opción preferencial por los pobres cuando buscamos ayudar a los que no tienen, sobre todo. También nos tomamos el tiempo para confesar nuestros pecados, para que el Señor nos perdone y nos santifique, limpiando nuestras almas mientras esperamos celebrar el nacimiento de nuestro Señor con corazones purificados. Sobre el madero, sobre la cruz de Cristo, se llevó a cabo no sólo la redención del género humano, sino también, la Nueva Alianza. En adelante ya no será necesario ofrecer el sacrificio de animales (corderos o cabritos) como en el antiguo Israel porque la Sangre de Cristo nos ha reconciliado con Dios. Por ello, esta señal la trazamos sobre nuestra frente misma, para que recordemos siempre las palabras de Jesucristo y las repitamos continuamente. La trazamos sobre nuestros labios, para que a tiempo y destiempo, proclamemos con nuestra palabra la Buena Nueva de Jesucristo. La trazamos, desde la frente hasta el pecho, de hombro a hombro, para recordar que en nuestro interior, donde decidimos qué hacer, debemos optar por el estilo de vida cristiano, debemos ser Cristo. Nos santiguamos al inicio de toda celebración: “En el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo”. La asamblea responde con un rotundo Amén que reconoce la Santísima Trinidad en un solo Dios. Lo invocamos, no porque Dios esté perdido, no porque se haya ido; lo invocamos porque no siempre hemos sido conscientes de su presencia continua en nosotros. JUAN EL BAUTISTA En una casa abierta de la escuela se escuchó a una mujer presentando a su marido a algunos de los otros padres. “Oh, José, me gustaría que conozcas al padre de Juanito. Y aquí, esta es la mamá de María, ya sabes la niña que juega fútbol con nuestra Elena”. Con satisfecha resignación Bill se presentó no por su nombre sino: “Soy el padre de Elena”. Es bueno saber quién es uno. Si somos el padre o la madre de alguien, hijo o hija, esposo o esposa, es importante que aceptemos el sentido pleno de nuestras diferentes funciones. Juan Bautista sabe quién es. Y quién no es. No es el Cristo. No es Elías. Tampoco igual a ningún otro profeta que el pueblo de Dios hubiese visto. Juan Bautista sabe que su misión es divina.
