The Holy Family
and
Mary the Mother of God
Normally the Sunday after Christmas would be
the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and
Joseph. This feast honors the Holy Family as
rightly it should but at the same time it reminds us
of the importance of Family life not simply for
the individual but for society as well. However,
this year the feast is bumped because it falls on
the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God. No
matter, because the feast of the Holy Family ex-
ists because of, and is integrally bound to, the
truth that Mary is the Mother of God.
Some wonder how Mary can be the mother of
God, often asking “is she not the mother of His
humanity not His divinity?” This question is of-
ten predicated on a false assumption of Jesus; that
He is a Human Person and a Divine Person. Je-
sus is a Divine Person with two natures: a human
nature and a divine nature. The two natures are
not split into two personalities but rather are unit-
ed in the one Divine Person. The person is the
one who is both the object and subject of an ac-
tion. If I hit you in the nose, I – the person – is
responsible not my hand. Thus, if you say:
“OUCH! You hit me!” I cannot say “No, I did not
hit you, my hand hit you.” I, the person, am the
one who acted and thus is responsible. Nor could
I say “No, I did not hit you, I hit your nose!” Ob-
viously your nose is a part of you, the person. If
Jesus, the Divine Person – God, is in Mary’s
womb then He – God – is in Mary’s womb. Mary
gave birth to Jesus, a Divine Person, she nursed
Him, changed Him, and all the while He is a Di-
vine Person. Therefore, Mary is truly the Mother
of God because He is God. While Mary is holy
enough in herself that with Joseph, their family
can truly be called “holy”, with the reality that
Jesus is God, the Second Person of the Trinity,
the family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph is Holy be-
yond comprehension.
Family life is the first society by which a child
begins to learn how to be a participating member
of society. One aspect of any society is authority.
Any society without authority is doomed to chaos
and anarchy. It is also integral to society that just
and legitimate authority be respected. If it is not
respected then once again chaos and anarchy
reign. Parents have an important role to play in
educating their children on the importance of au-
thority and respect of it. In the Holy Family we
see Joseph and Mary first acknowledging the Au-
thority of God in humbling accepting His will for
them. We also see their respect for the authority
of man in fulfilling the request that they submit to
the census.
Another aspect of any society is sacrifice for the
common good. Family life offers this first in the
sacrifices that husband and wife must make for
the good of their marriage and the good of their
children. Also the child should have to make sac-
rifices for the good of the family. This is espe-
cially evident when there are siblings. The more
siblings one has then the more one will learn the
meaning of sacrifice for the common good and
the good of other individuals as well. Again, we
see this in Mary and Joseph in the sacrifices they
had to make for the good of each other and for the
protection of Jesus. Learning to deny one self
comforts and immediate satisfaction for the good
of others is a concept I fear is all but lost in a
world that glorifies individualism and one’s own
happiness, comfort and satisfaction as primary
and the common good of others as secondary. To
learn this, children must see this in the relation-
ship of their parents to each other, the demand of
this in family life, and the example the parents set
in their own communities.
In Jesus, Mary (The Mother of God), and Joseph,
