Prayers for November The Month of the Holy Souls in Purgatory

By Scott P. Richert As the weather grows colder and the leaves fall, and Thanks-giving and Christmas approach, it is natural that our thoughts turn to those whom we have loved who are no longer with us.

How appropriate, then, that the Catholic Church offers us No-vember, which begins with All Saints Day and All Souls Day, as the Month of the Holy Souls in Purgatory—those who have died in grace, yet who failed in this life to make satisfaction for all of their sins.

In recent years, perhaps no Catholic doctrine has been more misunderstood by Catholics themselves than the doctrine of Purgatory. Consequently, we tend to downplay it, even seem a little embarrassed by it, and it is the Holy Souls who suffer because of our discomfort with the doctrine.

Purgatory is not, as many people think, one last trial; all of those who make it to Purgatory will one day be in Heaven. Purgatory is where those who have died in grace, but who have not fully atoned for the temporal punishments resulting from their sins, go to finish their atonement before entering Heaven. A soul in Purgatory may suffer, but he has the assur-ance that he will ultimately enter Heaven when his punish-ment is complete. Catholics believe Purgatory is an expres-sion of God's love, His desire to cleanse our souls of all that might keep us from experiencing the fullness of joy in Heav-en.

As Christians, we don't travel through this world alone. Our salvation is wrapped up with the salvation of others, and char-ity requires us to come to their aid. The same is true of the Holy Souls. In their time in Purgatory, they can pray for us, and we should pray for the faithful departed that they may be freed from the punishment for their sins and enter into Heav-en.

We should pray for the dead throughout the year, especially on the anniversary of their death, but in this Month of the Ho-ly Souls, we should devote some time every day to prayer for the dead. We should start with those closest to us—our moth-er and father, for instance—but we should also offer prayers for all the souls, and especially for those most forsaken.

We believe that those Holy Souls for whom we pray will con-tinue to pray for us after they have been released from Purga-tory. If we live Christian lives, we too will likely find our-selves in Purgatory someday, and our acts of charity toward the Holy Souls there now will ensure that they remember us before the throne of God when we are most in need of pray-ers. It's a comforting thought, and one that should encourage us, especially in this month of November, to offer our prayers for the Holy Souls.

Eternal Rest One of the most commonly recited of Catholic prayers in times past, this prayer has fallen into disuse in the last few decades. Prayer for the dead, however, is one of the greatest acts of charity we can perform, to help them during their time in Purgatory, so that they can enter more quickly into the full-ness of heaven. Continued in the column to the right > > >

< < < Continued from the column on the left.

If you are offering the prayer for a particular person, you can substitute "him" or "her" for "them."

Eternal Rest Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faith-ful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. Taken from Catholicism.about.com website.

Your response is needed in planning for the upcoming year. Seriously consider the shar-ing of your time, talent and treasure with your parish com-munity. Thank you to those who have already responded.

Church of the Ascension Norwood Young America, MN

MASS AT THE HARBOR Mass at The Harbor will be held the second Friday of

each month at 10:15 am. All are welcome.

Anyone in need of Mercy?? There is an image of Jesus as Divine Mercy in the entryway. Nearly 100 years ago, Jesus appeared to St. Faustina with this request: tell the world of My love & mercy. He gave her some short prayers to

accompany the image. We are making this image and its prayers available parishioners to have in your

homes for a week or two, whatever works for you. The chaplet prayer takes only 6 minutes, and we

would ask you to pray it daily before the image as a family/couple/individual. The phone number is there

with the image for you to arrange to get it. It is especially appropriate for the upcoming Year of

Mercy. For more info or to sign up to have the image in your home, please call Mary Kelly at

952-353-2633.

STEWARDSHIP Thank you to everyone who returned their

completed Time and Talent Response Form. Everyone should have received one in the mail. If you did not, it is available in the Church entry. Your com-

pleted form can be returned here at church in the “Stewardship” basket or in the

collection basket. It can also be mailed to Church of the Ascension. Thank you again for being a part of

our parish and offering your gifts to God. For any questions, can contact Sue Tellers

952-467-3274.

Campaign for Human Development Next weekend there will be a second collection for

Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). This program provides funding for millions of people living in poverty here in the U.S. Your sup-

port is appreciated.

Food Shelf November is Food Shelf month! There are more

families in need and coming for assistance to our lo-cal food shelf. Therefore, they need to re-stock the

shelves. If you can donate canned goods or other items there is a collection box in the church

entryway. Cash donations are also acceptable.

Early Bulletin Deadline Any items for the bulletin of November 29th

must be received in the parish office by November 17th at 4 p.m.
