Thinking About Sunday Morning
Brothers and Sisters, as you know,
we’re in the middle of a library
clean out and renovation effort
(thanks to the team of folks who
have been working hard to make
it happen!). Recently, while re-
viewing the top shelf, I came
across a book titled: Halley’s Bible
Handbook. It is an eclectic (but
not random) collection of writings
and information pertinent to
God’s Word. The author, Dr. Hen-
ry Halley, published the first edi-
tion in 1924. It subsequently
went through at least 24 updates.
If you have a chance, check out
the brief Wikipedia entry on Dr.
Halley. He seems to have been an
amazing man of the Bible.
I mention all of this because I
want to share some words of Dr.
Halley’s regarding Sunday morn-
ing. Warning: To our “modern”
ears we might be inclined to view
him as overly stringent or legalis-
tic…and perhaps there’s a small
bit (a very small bit) of truth
there. But I think it’s important
that we hear from a faithful
brother of the past; one unbur-
dened by the particular pitfalls in
culture and thinking (even church
culture and thinking) that we ex-
perience today. Certainly Dr. Hal-
ley had his own “blind-spots” (to
borrow a John Piper term), but
maybe here he speaks to one of
our own:
THE HABIT OF GOING TO CHURCH
EVERY SUNDAY AS AN ACT OF
WORSHIP TO GOD
All Christian People Ought to Go to Church Every Sunday, Unless Hindered by Sickness,
Or Necessary Work, Or Necessity of Some Kind.
It Ought to be a Matter of Con-science,
And an Act of Worship. The Churches are
The Most Important institutions In any community.
The Sunday Services are The church’s Principal Way of do-
ing its work; It is THE EVENT of the community
life. Nothing ever happens in any com-
munity As important to the life of the
community As the regular Sunday Worship
Services.
Every community ought to love its churches,
And, at this appointed time, turn out, en masse,
To honor HIM in whose name the church exists.
I’m stopping this poem about
halfway through for the sake of
space. I think I’d like to share
more of Dr. Halley’s words with
you regarding Sunday morning
(not all of which I’ve read yet for
myself). You may find him show-
ing up repeatedly in the Chatter
over the next few months…we’ll
see.
No, gathering with the church on
Sunday doesn’t make you a Chris-
tian. No, God is not honored
merely by our presence together.
BUT, faithfully coming to meet
with God’s people in worship of
him (which is, de-facto, also loving
service of one another) is a mas-
sive step in faithfully following
after Jesus.
Love in Christ,
P.J.

Do you have a prayer request? Contact Teresa Doran, prayer coordinator,
In addition to our volunteer needs, our church is looking for a very special person for the PAID position of Nursery Coordina-tor on Sunday mornings. This amazing op-portunity for ministry to the youngest of our congregation is vital to the health and growth of our church. The person must be over 18, be faithfully walking in their Christian faith, have experience with small children (preferably with a group), and be able to work from 9:30-noon every Sunday morning Do you know anyone that would fit this criterion? Please have them contact Brenda at [email protected] for more info.
Needed: Volunteers in Children’s Ministry
1) Nursery volunteers on a once-a-month rotation. Your
schedule can be either during the church service or during the
Sunday School hour (your choice). Our littlest ones are adora-
ble and fun!
2) Helpers to our Sunday School teachers serving once or
twice a month for one hour. We have great kids that need
great Christian mentors. Make a difference in a kid’s life.
3) VBS is coming on June 10-14. Plan now to serve in this
amazing outreach ministry. Save the dates and request your
