The objective of the Centre for Science Education and Observatory is to promote science education and

astronomy among teachers and students in Tanzania.

Mponda Malazo of Universe Awareness for Young Children - Tanzania (UNAWE-TZ) Sue and Chuck Ruehle of Telescopes to Tanzania (TtT), a project of Astronomers Without Borders (AWB)

The Centre will conduct astronomical and science training for teachers and students.

We use portable gear, ie: Galeileo scopes, 5 inch OneSky reflectors, and English/Swahili print resources for astronomy events like a solar or Lunar eclipse; or a star party hosted by residential schools, churches, villages, etc.

The Centre will integrate astronomy in the teaching curriculum as outlined in the national syllabus.

The Centre will work to develop and disseminate hands on science and astronomy

teaching resources.

The Centre will create a model science laboratory and observatory with telescopes

and computers, a portable planetarium, internet capacity for distance learning, and global connections to other observatories

The Centre will serve as an equatorial dark sky observing centre and observatory

Next Steps – The Way Forward

• Science Ambassadors from the June 2014 training will work with schools to introduce inquiry methods of teaching science

• A roll-off Observatory with a 12 inch Cave Cassegain Telescope will be developed at a Dark Sky site near Arusha National Park
