CHS ball attendees go “Back to the ’60s!”
The East Broward Auxiliary for Children’s Home Society of
Florida (CHS) took guests “Back to the ’60s” to celebrate the
Intercoastal Division’s 40th anniversary with style and flair. The
groovy and success-ful event raised more than $219,000 for the I.
Lorraine Thomas Chil-dren’s Emergency Home and Family Support
Center. “Our desire was to raise financial assistance and
awareness, and we certainly reached our goal,” says Ball Chair
Alfredo Aguirre. “Many thanks to our CHS donors, auxiliary members
and volunteers for their support.”
Highlights of the night included honoring I. Lorraine Thomas
with the prestigious R. David Thomas Child Advocate of the Year
Award and Betsy Beardsley with the CHS Lifetime Achieve-ment Award.
The Child Advocate of the Year Award recog-nizes individuals and
groups that have made a significant impact toward improving the
lives of homeless, neglected and abused children throughout
Florida. In recogni-tion of Lorraine’s incredible efforts, the
award will be renamed the I. Lorraine & R. David Thomas Child
Advocate of the Year Award. This year’s CHS Lifetime Achievement
Award recognizes Betsy’s 39 years of outstanding work and
accomplishment in the Bro-ward County community.
Many thanks to our Ball Chair, Alfredo Aguirre, and to our
commit-tee members for making the night so meaningful! The
children, families and staff of CHS appreciate all you do!

Message from the Executive Director
winter 2008
Making a difference in the lives of our children Grants and
corporate donations
32
The winter season has been filled with re-markable holiday
spirit, generosity and change. It has truly been an excit-ing time
to be involved with CHS, and we are so grateful for our
commu-nity’s support.
Over the holidays, we received several gener-ous donations to
assist our families and chil-dren. It was both an inspiring and
humbling experience. Our children were ecstatic when they received
their gifts, and others could not believe that someone who didn’t
even know them cared enough to buy something just for them. Many
thanks to our donors and volun-teers for fulfilling our children’s
wishes.
Finally, I’d like to share very exciting and important news. Our
division is expand-ing! Our 13th Street location moved to The
Exchange at 3333 W. Commercial Blvd. on February 1 where it’s
home to our new Fam-ily Preservation and Intervention Program.
Also, our division has taken over our former CHS Foundation office
in Dania. Currently, the Dania office is under construction and
will serve three of our programs: Parenting Support, the Positive
Parenting Program and Supportive Family Dynamics.
As you can see, the Intercoastal Division is in the midst of a
lot of great happenings! We look forward to more, and I thank our
staff, colleagues, board, auxiliaries and volunteers for their
continued support.
Have a happy and healthy 2008, and thank you for supporting
CHS!
Sincerely,
Rebecca Mcguire
We’re excited to announce that, since sum-mer of 2007, the
Intercoastal Division has received more than $120,000 from
founda-tions to support our programs, especially the I. Lorraine
Thomas Children’s Emergency Home and Family Support Center! We’re
incredibly grateful for this generous support that is helping so
many children and families.
Our Emergency Home has been one of the greatest beneficiaries,
receiving $20,000 from The Batchelor Foundation for educa-tional
activities, clothing and personal hygiene items; $10,000 from the
William R. Watts Foundation, Inc., for operational support; $7,500
from B.J.’s Charitable Foundation; $5,000 from the Florida Marlins
Com-munity Foundation; and $2,000 from the Roselyn Meyer Family
Foundation and the Anthony R. Abraham Foundation.
The Community Foundation of Bro-ward granted $15,000 to support
a full-time
case manager for the Emergency Home, and we received $3,000 from
the John Gordon Bull Fund of the Community Foundation.
Our Parent Support Program received $20,000 from the Ama-turo
Foundation, Inc., and $54,000 from The Jim Moran Foundation. The
Moran grant is a two-year contract to provide a caseworker within
this department, a position critical to helping families in
crisis.
Other noteworthy foundation donations include $5,000 from the
Martha G. Moore Foundation and generous in-kind assistance from
Kid’s Give, Inc., which provided toilet-ries, diapers and clothing
for our children and families. And more great news! The Baxter
Foundation is granting $41,888 for a nurse to serve eight medically
challenged children and their foster parents.
Lastly, we specifically thank the follow-ing businesses and
corporations for their generous assistance: Bentley Fort
Lauder-dale, Pat Delaney with Delaney Media Agency, Staples,
Centerline Homes, Inc./Rob Stiegle, Merit Floors, Inc., Verizon
Business, Crowley Services and the Construction Executive
Association.
What a wonderful holiday season we had this year! To kick it
off, Hawk’s Landing held its annual holiday boutique, raising more
than $7,000 for our children and families. Many thanks to Hawk’s
Landing and the West Bro-ward Auxiliary for their continued
generosity.
Later in the season, our foster families were treated to a
holiday party at Marriott Harbor Beach, highlighted by an
appearance from Santa Claus! Thank you Marriott Harbor Beach, Alan
Pinado, Judy Thomas, Scott Shrews-bury and Michele Greene for
making the party possible.
Children in our Emergency Home enjoyed ex-citing days, too.
Tricia Saad and her infamous crew came bearing gifts with Santa,
and then Sherry Manley invited the children to her birthday party.
Finally, Cardinal gibbons hosted a wonderful day of food, fun and
festivities for our youth!
Several community organizations also worked hard to provide an
extremely special day for families served by our division. Temple
Beth Emet created a family fun day with games, a bounce house, a
rock climbing wall, food, and visits from Santa, Mickey Mouse and
more! Many families said it was an unbelievable experience and
expressed their sincere gratitude for the temple’s outreach. North
Broward Prep also provided two busloads of gifts for our children
and families, and many other organizations pro-vided remarkable
donations as well.
We’d like to also thank the following organizations for their
generous support this holiday season:
Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Chamber of Commerce, Sun-Trust Bank, South
Broward High, Sunshine Cathedral, John the Baker, the Big Bike
Rid-ers, Verizon Business, CBRE/Richard Ellis, the Social Security
Administration, Crowley Liner Services, Inc., and many more!
Clockwise from far left:

Celebrating 105 years of advocacy for children
Tuesday, April 1, 2008
Doubletree Hotel101 South Adams StreetTallahassee, Florida
get involved! Contact Summer Pfeiffer at (850) 921-0772 or
[email protected] to learn how to make a difference for
vulnerable children in our com-munities.
*For a detailed list of our legislative priorities, visit
www.chsfl.org/docs/2008LegislativeBroch.pdf or contact your local
CHS division.
From the CEO
As the State of Florida’s revenue challenges continue and the
financial climate nationally remains bleak, I grow increasingly
concerned for the well-being of children in our communities. The
stress that ac-companies loss of employment, bankruptcy,
foreclosure and other financial burdens places an increasing number
of children at risk for abuse or neglect. We have an
ever-increasing responsibility to protect the young victims of
families in duress. Here at CHS, we take that charge very
seriously, and we’re rallying support to help communicate to our
elected officials that children must be a priority in Florida.
Once again, I invite you to bring your support to Tallahassee as
we gather together for our annual CHS Advocacy Day at the Capitol.
On April 1, CHS clients, volunteers, board members and staff will
en-gage in face-to-face conversations with legislators from around
the state, voicing our concerns for children and families while
encourag-ing Florida’s representatives to take a stand for our
young ones. If you have a desire to improve the lives of at-risk
youth in your com-munity, please join us. You don’t need any
political experience, just a heart to help those whose voices can’t
be heard without you.
This Advocacy Day is especially important for CHS and the
children we serve. With today’s economic challenges, we believe any
reduc-tions to the state’s Child Protection System would be
devastating. Thus, our primary message is that Florida spares this
vulnerable population from budget reductions in services or
programs.
We’re also encouraging Florida’s leaders to:
• Develop and sustain a quality workforce in child welfare to
reduce turnover and increase positive outcomes for children;
• Allow CHS and other organizations the freedom to provide
ad-ditional mandatory auto insurance coverage for direct care staff
who transport children;
• Clarify the focus of Community Based Care Lead Agencies and
require national accreditation for these agencies and their
sub-contractors;
• Support stronger, clearer adoption legislation;
• Support funding and initiatives for independent and
transitional living for teens aging out of foster care;
• Improve access to health care for uninsured children;
• Improve standards and funding for early child development and
education programs;
• Enhance the quality of Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten.
Please join us in Tallahassee as we bring critical child welfare
concerns to the atten-tion of our legislators. Contact your local
CHS division for more information on how to become involved.
Together, we will make a bigger difference for Florida’s children
and families.

Producing change for children an update on cHs’ strateGic
plan
Change a child’s life…change a child’s future Join tHe cHs
annual Fund today
Fragile, frightened and often forgotten, the children we serve
today aren’t unlike those we first served in 1902. They share the
hurt and disappointment of a shattered family. They long to feel
love, acceptance and secu-rity. To find hope and
guidance…opportuni-ties for success and happiness.
As we continue our celebration of 105 years of nurturing
children and strengthen-ing families, we have a responsibility to
do even more—to break the tragic cycle of abuse and neglect for
increasing num-bers of children.
We invite you to join us in this ambitious endeavor by becoming
a charter member of the CHS Annual Fund. Your member-
ship contribution will provide necessary local resources to help
children in your community as our staff develop, deliver and assess
programs and enhancements designed to break the generational cycle
of abuse and neglect for more youngsters.
Please partner with us as we rebuild trust in heartbroken
children and offer opportu-nities for happy, productive futures.
Nearly 200 of our friends have already joined us as CHS Annual Fund
Charter Members. Visit www.chsfl.org or contact Liz or Angela at
(321) 397-3000 to become a member of the CHS Annual Fund.
To-gether, we can ensure our vulnerable children are safe, healthy
and prepared for life.
In the next several editions, we’ll highlight steps we’re taking
and successes we’re experiencing as we fulfill responsibilities
outlined in our strate-gic plan. With this issue, we’re focusing on
the framework guiding us to become an organi-zation focused on and
driven by applied research and best practice.
In just the past 18 months, we’ve experi-enced success
through:
• Receiving a research grant from the Kel-logg Foundation to
integrate early educa-
tion and infant mental health consultative services into
dependency units;
• Receiving a national trauma center grant for the Pensacola
area to deliver complex trauma counseling services to children in
the dependency system;
• Partnering with the Florida State Univer-sity (FSU) Department
of Family Studies to use doctoral students to research program
issues such as the effectiveness of using post-legal adoption
services and
best practices in independent living programs;
• Working with FSU and the University of South Florida to
implement baseline
information on our newly developing programs;
• Purchasing early learning centers in Naples and assuming
operation of the early learning lab for Daytona Beach Community
College;
• Presenting in such public forums as legislative delegations,
Senate Hearings on child abuse and neglect, and Depart-ment of
Children and Families task force groups.
This is a mere snapshot of the exciting endeavors we’ve been
pursuing, with every initiative designed to ensure children are
safe, healthy and prepared for life. Stay tuned to learn more about
how CHS is paving the way to break the tragic cycles of abuse and
neglect for increasing numbers of children.

“Most FaMilies around the state are watching their budgets very
closely, cutting non-essential items so they can provide their
children with the neces-sities: food, housing and health care. But
for more than 43,000 children and young people — those who were
removed from their families for their
own well-being — the State of Florida itself is charged with
these budget decisions. Each year, the state budgets money to
house, feed, clothe, educate and heal these chil-dren. We have the
same obligation to them as we have for our own children: to manage
our budget efficiently while ensuring they are safe, healthy and
prepared for life. It is my hope that our legislative leaders honor
that obligation as they formulate solutions to Florida’s growing
budget problem. Living up to our obligations is never easy. That is
the real challenge for the Florida Legislature this year.”
Dave Bundy, published in several newspapers statewide and in the
January Newsletter of TaxWatch
When you become a charter member of the CHS Annual Fund, your
contribution will help ensure children in your community are safe,
healthy and prepared for life.
As an organization focused on and driven by applied research and
best practice, CHS can make a greater impact for Florida’s children
and families.
As our friends and supporters look for new ways to help children
in our communities, many have named CHS in their wills. Knowing
about their generosity helps us plan better for the future. If
you’ve named CHS in your will, please let us know so we may thank
you. Contact Bob Giese, President of the CHS Foundation, at
[email protected] or 1-877-9FORKIDS to share your intentions, or
to learn about other planned giving opportunities.
