WOW... What A Summer! With temperatures hovering in the 90s and high humidity, campers still came in larger numbers than were expected. Kids love CBC, and it shows! Total attendance for CBC-2015 was 1198. Not a record, but up over 2014 by 149.

And when the campers and staff arrived at camp, they found the campus in tip-top shape and two new games to play. Most, if not all, had not heard of Gaga Ball, which is thought to have originated in Israel, but they soon learned how much fun it was to play, and play and play...When there was free time, there was someone in the pit learning and playing. Summer Summary Continued Each week’s theme added to the atmosphere of a camp ready and eager to share the good news of Jesus Christ with everyone. There were a number of baptisms, and for that we praise the Lord. CBC is a place where lives are changed forever because of the opportunity provided to build friendships, get in touch with one’s self, and to experience the fellowship that Christ has provided in the church.

WEEK ONE Week one was a week of growth, fun, and fulfillment. In spite of the heat, everyone enjoyed games, competitions, and activities. Campers participated in classes and devotionals with enthusiasm. The inflatables were a source of fun and laughter and were made possible by CBC staff. The award winners were: Sportsmanship: Jaida Little and Thaddaeus Lankford; Director’s Award: Georgia Sherrill and Thomas Yukich; Junior Miss CBC: Emma Harding; and Junior Mister CBC: Noah Holland. There were also six baptisms during the week.

WEEK TWO Six were baptized between some severe thunderstorms, and campers learned how to live without water for six hours after the water department had an issue, but it turned into a teachable moment. We survived by toting water from the pool to flush the toilets, and our kitchen workers came to the rescue to wash the dinner dishes . What a testimony to service. We ended our week on Friday by having the local Health Department do its annual inspection. We passed with a Grade A. Thanks to all the CBC staff, Jimmy, Randall, Don and all the volunteers who helped make this a great week. Praise be to God!

WEEK THREEWe had eight baptisms. We had some staff in new positions, and they did a fantastic job. Some staff members have had to be away for a year or so, and we were glad to have them return. Bryson Gray stepped up and helped out by organizing our services each evening. Our Rookie Award this year went to Christian Neal. He really jumped in and acted like a veteran on staff. Our carnival was canceled due to rain, but the campers were flexible and understanding. Week Three campers are always willing and eager to answer the question, “What time is it?”

WEEK FOUR“Fully Energized” was the theme of Week Four, based on 2 Cor. 4:7. The idea of being fully charged or energized and not allowing the world to take away the power that has been given to us to live the Christian life. Everyone responded with enthusiasm in the activities for the week and kept spirits uplifted during the week. The new games were constantly being used, the paint run and other athletic events were well received, as was the talent show and laser light show at the end of the week. The Thursday night banquet was extra exciting as the PA was not working.

Six campers committed to living a life for the Lord by being baptized during the week. Late Night, True Love Waits and the candle devotional on the ball field brought the week to a close.

Robbie and Kristopher did a great job working with the juniors and carrying out their devotionals. 226 were in attendance, and we hope each one is “Staying Energized.”

Our award winners were: Junior Miss CBC: Grace Bellow; Junior Mr. CBC: Laethan Niedzielski; Senior Miss CBC: Angelina Nacca; Senior Mr. CBC: Caleb Barco; Junior Director’s award (female): Katlyn Poole; Junior Director’s (male): James Alligood; Senior Director’s (female): Kaleigh Hayner; Senior Director’s (male): Jacob Chesney; Sportsmanship (female): Dominique Dakin; Sportsmanship (male): Stephen Chesney; Rookie Award: Stephanie Levine

Swimming in MemoriesThe pool was full of fun-seekers of various sizes and swimming abilities. All swimmers were tested and assigned different color bracelets based on their abilities. This is a new rule implemented to comply with insurance requirements.

Everyone participated willingly, but some campers were not satisfied with the color bracelet they had earned and tried at various times to move up a level.

One such young man was named James, and many witnessed his memorable attempt to reach the top level. As he started his swim, the guys in the pool, recognizing what was happening, began to cheer for him. “Come on James, you can do it!” “Don’t give up, look how far you have come.” Guys were yelling and clapping, whistling, swimming alongside, and shouting encouragement. The entire pool was following James, and as he reached the other side, a great big cheer went up!

Everyone there felt the excitement, witnessed the success and changed a life. At camp, there are a lot of these minutes frozen in our minds that change the lives of those young people who attend. Moments when, even though they may not know the other person, something they say or something they do lasts a lifetime.

We Hate to BUG You!There were several incidents of Bed Bugs in some of the girls’ cabins this summer. Prior to camp, all of the cabins were checked by the bed bug dogs, which can find bugs that humans cannot see, and none were found. The incidents of bed bugs reported this year were from bed bugs that were brought to camp by campers. We identified one camper that had egg larvae in her luggage. The exterminators found less than a dozen active bugs. There was no infestation.

Bed bugs are not related to any issue involving cleanliness at home. They are making a resurgence in our country in many hotels, even those that are 5-Star rated. Usually they get in luggage and then make an appearance when you next travel, sometimes up to a year later.

The incidents reported this summer were handled with our exterminator. After camp, the cabins were checked again before we rented it to anyone else, and didn’t find any.

Several groups have rented camp since that time and no one has been affected. This is an issue we are going to have to deal with for a while but each incident will be handled to assure that they do not spread and do not affect the success of CBC.

A new policy, designed to prevent (as much as possible) the bringing of bed bugs to camp, will be introduced in the next newsletter and will be a part of the registration application. It will include the bringing of items to camp in plastic totes and not zippered bags. Specific instructions will be given on how to handle clothing and toiletry items. We have also had a 50 lb. capacity commercial dryer donated to camp so we can handle incidents and heat individuals’ clothing to a proper temperature to kill bugs and larvae if there is an incident.

Thank you for your understanding and support. Look for more info in the next Newsletter in November.

WEEK FIVEWe had a great week in camp and the campers and staff all appeared to enjoy the team building activities, especially the service projects. The campers spent two days moving rocks into the new seating around the fire pit, and staining the rail going to the pool and replanting the planter in front of cabin six. Movie night was a big hit with the bonfire and cookout at the fire pit. There was one baptism. Award winners were: Sportsmanship award: Alex Williams and Coltan Farrell; Mr. CBC: Dakoda Allen; Director’s award: Jesse Watson and Aviana Ortiz; Rookie Award: Robbie Santiago.

WEEK SIXThere were a lot of questions at Week Six (Senior Week)! The theme for the week was “Living the Questions: Encounters with the Questioning Christ.” In classes and during the worship times we explored five key questions that Jesus asked, questions that take us to the heart of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus.

During the week, we also sought to practice what we teach with olderteens going off campus to do work projects at Storehouse for

Jesus, a local charitable ministry. The younger teens prepared homemade frozen meals that Storehouse for Jesus would use later to help families in need, and they also did projects to help with camp maintenance and beautification. Six campers were baptized.

Award winners for the week were: Miss CBC: Courtney Bailey; Mr. CBC: Matt Dove; Director’s Award (female): Caitlynn Sickles; Director’s Award (male): Coleman Dove; CR Franks Sportsmanship (female): Jenna Sparks; CR Franks Sportsmanship (male):Alex Tanner; Rookie Award: John Sullivan.

WEEK SEVENWhat a blessing Week Seven was this year with a turnout of 207 in attendance. The theme for the week was“Follow Me” based on 1 Cor. 11:1, “Follow me as I follow Christ.” Our staff made our week easy in the way they conducted themselves as true Christ-like leaders. They exemplified the theme by the way they walked. The kids were great and were able to help us have a wonderful week by the way they handled themselves. We are blessed to say that we had seven young people who put on Christ during the week and then one more on Sunday night, after leaving camp.

Camper Profile: Courtney Bailey I am what some might call a “pew baby.” I was raised in the church since before I could even pronounce the name “Jesus.” Learning about Christ and Biblical stories from such a young age created my foundation for my Christianity that nothing can take away, but Carolina Bible Camp shaped and molded my Christianity more than anything else ever could. Without CBC and the amazing brothers and sisters I met there, I would not be who I am today.

I started going to Carolina Bible Camp at the age of nine, and I still remember the theme for the week nine years later. “Under His Armor,” a play on the athletic company Under Armour, was about putting on the full armor of Christ. We learned about the types of armor to wear, the weapon to carry, and the battle that we would continue to fight for the rest of our lives. Most importantly, we learned how to use to use our armor, swords, and fellow troops to win the battle. Carolina Bible Camp has taught me both the fundamentals and the finer points of Christianity, and the staff never tire of feeding my curiosity, listening to my struggles, or wiping my tears. CBC is my happy place, my safe haven, and my escape from this fallen world, and there is nothing I wouldn’t give up for camp.

WINNER OF A FREE WEEK OF CAMP FOR BEST ESSAY

The Lodge and Kickoff DinnerThe dining hall at CBC will never be the same after the Kick-Off Dinner April 9th to announce plans and begin raising monies for “The Lodge”. It will be an A-frame building near the lake that will provide a new site for registration during the camp season. It will also serve as an office and a multipurpose building with classrooms, a small kitchen, and other facilities to accommodate up to 120 people. This will give us multiple rooms for meetings during the winter months and provide an opportunity to enlarge our rental space.

The dining hall was turned into a spring oasis with green plants, a lattice screen and bistro lights hung over tables decorated in green cloths and fresh flowers. A delicious dinner was served by young ladies from CBC. The main attraction of the evening was the speaker, Ronnie Parker, an engineer from Hendrick Motorsports. His message of living with your circumstances and making the most of the opportunities you have was certainly fitting and challenging. Thanks to everyone that made this event so successful. Can’t wait until the next one.

“Why Do I Love CBC?”Why do I love CBC? Yes, I have been asked this before and the simple answer

would be, “it’s right down the street from my house and beside my home

congregation Jericho Church of Christ.” But this year, my answer changed.

It all began about two years ago Week 1, 2013 during nightly worship, I

volunteered to do a trust building exercise and “Fall Back on God,” but I

couldn’t do it. I didn’t really have total trust and faith in God yet, and this

made me go into a deeper study. I asked for advice and guidance from elders

and fellow church members. And the next summer at camp one of the

campers was baptized. At that moment, I realized what a life-changing

event it was: baptism wasn’t just about repenting of your sins, it’s about

rejuvenating your heart and your soul.

That October after Bible School, I talked to my family and friends and knew

that the time was perfect, and I was baptized into Christ and became anew.

After all my experiences at camp helped me become who I am today. It

doesn’t change you for a day, week, month or even a year, it changes you

forever. People come from different backgrounds and cities, but when we all

come together, we form the body of Christ.

Just like in 1 Corinthians 12:12, (For as the body of Christ is one, and hath

many members, and all members of that one body, being many, are one are

one body: so also is Christ.) So if this is your first year coming to camp or you

are keeping the tradition going, make new friends, study deeper and eat

more tasty camp food (which would be my choice), you can always say,

“CBC IS ALWAYS THE PLACE FOR ME!
