Online College Students 2014: Comprehensive Data on Demands and Preferences
Questions for Enrollment Advisor By understanding the types of questions online students have, institutions can be more prepared with
the necessary information and training of enrollment advisors. As expected, the most frequently asked
question was: “How much does it cost?” Undergraduate students were more likely to select “how much
financial aid can I get?” with 61% of undergraduates and 45% of graduates posing this question to an
enrollment advisor.

Application ProcessTo better understand what is commonly included in an online program application, students were asked
about the required elements. A large majority (77%) indicate transcripts needed to be submitted and
about 40% were required to submit standardized test scores. About twice as many graduate students
(48%) as undergraduates (27%) were required to submit essays as part of the application process.
Although the financial aid staff can answer detailed questions, consider ensuring all enrollment advisors
can talk knowledgably about cost and financial aid possibilities. Consider adding a tuition planner to the
enrollment staff to serve as a liaison between the enrollment and financial aid departments.
The majority of schools do not appear to require standardized tests or essays as part of the application process. Institutions that do should re-evaluate if this is a necessity. If it is, take the time to explain to the prospective students what these items mean to your institution and why they are important for your institution. Consider performing transcript collection services for prospective students to help streamline the application process.

Mainstream DegreesBachelor of Healthcare Administration or Healthcare OperationsAs one industry expert stated, “many healthcare workers are foreign to higher education.” This
degree is an opportunity for individuals working in healthcare (registration, billing, front line staff,
bed management, patient safety, insurance verification, etc.) who don’t have bachelor’s degrees
to distinguish him or herself or transition from front line staff to managerial or credentialing roles.
In addition, those outside the field looking to go in to healthcare would greatly benefit from this
degree. Topics of study could include: medical terminology, Medicare, revenue cycle, healthcare
finance / billing, collection, IT management, etc. While competition is fierce at the master’s level, it is less so at the bachelor’s level, with Ashford
University holding a 13% share of the total (online and on-ground) market in 2012. Conferrals of
bachelor’s degrees in the Health/Health Care Administration/Management CIP code from 2007 to
2012 have increased 82%, with steady increases year over year. Ashford’s conferrals more than
tripled from 2010 to 2012, increasing from 257 to 914. Medical and Health Services Managers are
projected to grow 23% with 73k jobs added by 2022. Bachelor of Health Information ManagementThe American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 required that all
public and private healthcare providers and other eligible professionals (EP)
must have adopted and demonstrated “meaningful use” of electronic medical
records (EMR) in order to maintain their existing Medicaid and Medicare
reimbursement levels. Additionally, on October 1, 2014, all medical coding will
switch from ICD 9 to ICD 10, increasing from 13,000 codes to 68,000 codes.
Finally, the implementation of the Affordable Care Act is adding millions more
insured patients. Given all these changes, the amount of data that will need
to be managed is growing exponentially, driving a need for a degree in Health
Information Management (HIM).The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects job growth in medical records and health
information technicians of 21% by 2020. The majority of current workers hold an associate’s
degree, but industry experts say that requiring a bachelor’s is becoming more common. This offers
an excellent opportunity to provide an accelerated degree program to those holding an associate’s
degree, as well as a traditional-length program for those without any prior certification. A number of institutions do offer a degree in HIM; 56 of the universities offering a bachelor’s of
HIM are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information
Management Technology, and 25 of those universities offer the degree online. As the need for data
management continues to grow, and the number of medical records being processed also
continues to grow, this degree will only increase in value.

Health and Fitness
A Booming Industry
As the national health care conversation begins to focus on prevention and wellness, the health and
fitness industry is more successful than ever. In fact, the employment rate for fitness professionals is expected to increase 22% through the year 2022 — significantly faster than the national average of 10% for all other industries. This high demand is the result of several factors, including
everything from an aging population and changing demographics to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Minnesota is one of the healthiest states in America, making it an ideal environment for exercise science careers. A Concordia degree will help you take your place in this thriving job market.
The Right Career for You
The health and fitness industry includes dynamic career opportunities and salaries with the potential for growth. Exercise physiologists and athletic trainers make an average of about $42,000 per year, which amounts to around $22 per hour. Keep in mind that this is the average, so some professionals in the field go on to create their own businesses, work for high-profile clients and enjoy increased earning potential as a result. There’s even more good news when it comes to exercise science
careers: the average salary of part-time personal trainers has increased 12% since 2010.
