World War One Battlefields Trip At the end of term, the History Department took
a group of Year 9 students to visit historically
significant sites in Belgium and France, focusing
on events that took place during World War One.
We visited places such as Thiepval memorial,
which remembers the 72,195 men whose bodies
were lost during WWI, a battlefield from the
Somme offensive which included a trench used
in the war and the town of Ypres, where a major
battle took place. The students showed a lot of
interest and respect when walking around these
sites and were a credit to the school.
My personal highlight was visiting Mailly Wood Cemetery. This is a small cemetery, like manyothers in the area, that have graves dedicated to men who fought
and died in these tragic battles. However, this was particularly
important to me as it contains the resting place of my Great, Great
Grandfather who fought and died in the Somme offensive in 1916.
This was my first time visiting the grave and an opportunity for me
to tell his story and my family’s story of loss.
The students really enjoyed the hostel games room, which had a
pool and table-
football table, and the opportunity to explore Ypres(and its Belgian chocolate shops!). We were also lucky enough to
be accompanied by a professional tour guide, Steve Clarke, who
told us stories of bravery from the soldiers who sacrificed
themselves to protect our country, and how 50,000lb bombs had
torn up the landscape. We would like to thank him and the Galina Tour Company for helping
us fully experience and understand these important sites.
