CHRISTMAS PAST: For most of us, Christmas brings forth a flood of memories that we cherish and hold dear to our heart. They include so many of the traditions that include trimming the tree, wrapping gifts, sending and receiving cards, the turkey or Christmas ham dinner, the stockings, the candle light service and, in many cases, a blanket of snow. We all remember those special Christmas gifts we received as a child. In all of these memories are the close ties with family, friends and relatives. Those memories are quite different for most of the 130 youth we will have this Christmas in our Methodist Home in Macon, St. Marys, Columbus, Americus, Valdosta and Waverly Hall. For some, there is no memory of a Christmas except for what they saw on TV or at school. For some, it is wondering if they got gifts from a Santa’s tree or other Christmas toy drive. The day is one like so many others with family conflicts, finding or losing housing and daily struggles. Abuse, neglect and trauma are all too often a part of their memories at Christmas time. For others, it has been a Christmas here and a Christmas there for most of their lives. CHRISTMAS PRESENT: Thanks to you and the great traditions we have at the Methodist Home, this Christmas will be one to remember for a lifetime! Our cottages paint huge Christmas cards; they prepare a special skit (some funny, but most deeply moving) for the Birthday Party for Jesus. The Bishop will read the Christmas story, each cottage will do a service project as a gift to someone in need, a Christmas banquet will be held with lots of good food and desserts. Our wonderful churches arrive with or

send gifts picked just for them. So many of these churches have made this event their Christmas tradition for years! The Airmen from Warner Robins Air Force Base, as well as Woodmen of the World have special parties. Christmas Eve is most always a dinner out with all the kids on campus joining my family. CHRISTMAS FUTURE: This is what it is all about! Our prayer is that the youth we serve can look back and know that the special gift of the Christ child was God’s gift to their broken spirits. They have what can be called an “orphan’s spirit” which is in effect to trauma of repeated abandonment, neglect, abuse or multiple placements. Christmas is a special time when we not only provide a Christmas to celebrate and remember, but we share the good news, the amazing news that they are indeed a child of God, His for all eternity. Every year, I will get a call from a resident who will share with me, “The childhood I had, the Home gave me!” And so many will tell me that they celebrate Christmas with their families with the traditions they learned from the Home. This is a time of great financial need at your Methodist Home. We thank you for your generous Christmas gifts and for its impact on our youth throughout the coming year.

An Evening of Hope took place on October 4, 2012 at The Methodist

Home. It was another success raising funds to help with our children’s

needs. Almost 300 guests gathered in the Rumford Center gymnasium

to hear the McDuffie Center String Ensemble from Mercer University

and Guest Speaker, Isaiah Wilcox, a Methodist Home Alumni. Mr.

Lonnie Bivins and his staff prepared a delicious meal of bacon wrapped

filet mignon, vegetables, and cheesecake.

During the program, Jones, Cork, and Miller Law Firm were honored

as a Hero, Saint, and Legend. They have been The Methodist Home’s

legal counsel for 140 years. A plaque and picture will be displayed on

our Heroes, Saints, and Legends wall.

Every year at The Home, we have a tradition of welcoming back former

residents. This homecoming is a day-long event and this year, it was held on

August 25th. Alumni from as far as Portland, Oregon came to share memories

of their childhood.

The day began with a social time for many generations to share their memories

of growing up at The Home. Pictures were looked at and stories were told. Next,

alumni and current residents went to the gym to listen to a multi-generational

panel answer questions about growing up at the home. Those in attendance

learned how different life was for each generation. For example, what it was like

working in the shoe shop to make shoes for the residents in the 1920’s. They

learned that they all had something in common – each generation learned their

Christmas traditions from living at The Home.

After lunch, a cottage got

to throw water balloons at

Dr. Rumford and Dr. Lawrence. They received a water balloon for each hour they

read over the summer. Combined, they had 90 balloons to throw. They also struck a

deal with Dr. Rumford and Dr. Lawrence that the cottage would get an additional ten

balloons if Dr. Rumford and Dr. Lawrence were able to throw an arsenal of balloons

back. All together 125 balloons were thrown.

Next, the Alumni had their business meeting and the day ended with an ice cream

social.

Everyone had a good time sharing memories and learning from each other.

growing up at The Home. Pictures were

looked at and stories were told.

On Thursday, August 23rd, Our House at Arabella, located in Waverly Hall, GA unveiled a new Academic Performance Center in Memory of Mildred K. Sumner.

We were honored by the presence of several members of our local community as well as pastors and leadership from our organization to dedicate a special place for our girls to learn, grow, and excel in their educational pursuits. We honored the life of Mildred K. Sumner who valued education, and worked hard to achieve career success at a time when many women were undervalued in the executive world. Her dedication and self-determination serve as a shining example that no matter what you are faced with, or where you come from, if you have faith in God and in yourself, you can achieve great things.

A large crowd enjoyed an evening of food and fellowship in celebration of the dedication. Our girls gave those in attendance a tour of the home and shared many wonderful stories about their time here.

Mr. Mike Duggar, Regional Director, gave the opening remarks and told us about the excitement surrounding this room, and its possibilities for the girls that our agency serves. This room has three new computer stations with a printer. A fourth computer is linked to a large television that will be used for video teleconferences and large scale online classes. The girls will be able to use this room for quiet reading, tutoring, and working on school projects.

Additionally, our Transitional Living Program will soon take shape at Arabella. This program is for girls who have graduated high school and have begun their higher education. This room will be a tremendous asset for this program in aiding these girls in future success.

Rev. Reggie Williams, of South Columbus United Methodist Church, gave the invocation and blessed the room. Dr. Steve Rumford gave closing remarks and encouraged the girls to pursue as much academic success as they can, because “education is something that no one can ever take away from you.”

Mildred K. SumnerMildred K. Sumner was born April 3, 1930 in Phoenix City, AL, daughter of the late Albert Flournoy Kemp and Claudie McDuffie Kemp. As a young girl during the Great Depression she knew about need and knew that as an adult she wanted to make a good living for herself and her family.

Mrs. Sumner was a self-educated businesswoman who excelled in insurance sales with Aflac. She valued education and had a strong faith in God. She believed that anyone, regardless of their circumstances, could thrive with enough faith in the Lord, and in themselves. Her perseverance and dedication to her career allowed her to provide abundantly for her sons. She retired after 25 years as a Sales Executive for Aflac. Her story is one of success through hard work, commitment and dedication.

Our House at Carpenter’s Way and the Arabella Home for Girls held a “Spirit Night” at Chick-fil-A Bradley Park Drive in Columbus, GA on Thursday August 2, 2012. A large crowd turned out to support the children and youth of our great organization, including groups from local United Methodist Churches and social clubs like the Southern Cruisers Riding Club, Chapter 275 from Columbus, GA. A donation drive for much needed toiletry items was held in conjunction with “Spirit Night” and the box overflowed by the end of the evening!

The Kiwanis Club of Greater Columbus presented

a check to the children of “Our House” recently to

provide for Back-to-School and educational needs.

The club raised the funds through their annual Vi-

dalia Onion Sale, and was pleased to donate a total

of over $2500 towards the ongoing and immediate

education needs of the children on our Columbus

Members of the Southern Cruisers Riding Club, Chapter

275 presented the proceeds of the 11th Annual “Bikes On

Broadway” event to Our House on Thursday, October 4th,

2012. Several members of the Southern Cruisers rode out to

the Carpenter’s Way Ranch campus of Our House to meet

the kids and staff. First Officer, Benny Downs presented

Regional Director, Mike Duggar with a check for over

$20,000 bringing the total contribution from the Southern

Cruisers organization to over $200,000 during the past 11

years. Thank you Southern Cruisers!

ChristmasTraditionsat The Methodist Children’s Home

Every year, we have a catered Christmas dinner at the cottage, hosted by a long-time friend of the Methodist

Home, Dr. Sue Bailes, affectionately known to girls and staff as “Ms. Sue.” We invite a few privileged guests,

usually the church pastor, youth pastor and their wives. Everyone wears their holiday finest as we are served

by the catering staff. After the meal, a few girls are given the honor of reading parts of the Christmas story.

We then dim the lights and sing Christmas carols, always ending with a rousing rendition of “We Wish You

a Merry Christmas!”

We see our guests off with a word of prayer and thanks. Then comes the moment the girls look forward to

all year---opening presents! Each girl is assigned a “reindeer name” to discourage peeking, and one by one

they open their gifts so generously donated by members of the community. This is a time shared between

only girls and staff, and a time when precious memories are made. Memories such as a 15-year-old finally

getting the Baby Alive doll she’s been asking for since she was five years old. Memories such as the 18-year-

old getting the TV that will keep her company in her dorm room next year. Memories of a resident being

overwhelmed by the amount of “crazy socks” she’s received. Memories of each girl being showered with love,

from strangers and loved ones alike. Memories of each girl experiencing a Christmas like she’s never seen,

and being in a place so full of love, not just during the Christmas season, but all year round.

The Christmas Tradition for the St. Mary’s group home is our “Birthday for Jesus Celebration.” This is celebrated on the last day of school marking the beginning of our resident’s winter holiday break.

During this celebration, the community, volunteers, caseworkers, families, friends, residents and staff come together to celebrate the birth of Jesus and the love, support and caring we give to our boys. During the celebration, we enjoy singing presented by a fantastic and

local a cappella group, the “Heirs”. It is a time together where we enjoy lots of food, games, singing, socializing and family. Our boys take the time to

say thank you and show their appreciation to all who have helped them throughout the year.

At the end of the celebration we all gather around, as a family, in the living room to watch the joy and excitement on the faces of our children as they open up Christmas gifts. When the night ends we all hug one another to say and show our love until we see each other again in the New Year.

Christmas in Valdosta is an exciting time. The girls decorate the tree and

cottage the day or weekend after Thanksgiving. As Christmas approaches,

there are several long-standing traditions. We make cookies and put them in

pretty Christmas containers or bags and give them to those who are special

to us in the community. They are delivered in person by the girls. We use

cultivating character traits that fit the child or that we want to enhance in

a child instead of their names on the gift tags, this way they don’t know

exactly who the gift is for even if they have guessed what the present is. We

have a Birthday Party for Jesus. At the Birthday Party of Jesus, each person

tells what Christmas means to them. On Christmas Day, we help feed the

hungry at the church before going out and having lunch.

The girls want to start a new tradition. Last year they requested to have

hors d’oeuvres for Christmas dinner and they wanted to prepare them

themselves. They LOVED it and have asked to do it again this year.

Wow! We are in the season already. I look forward to this time of the year.

By the time December finally rolls around, we have been in the Christmas

spirit for about two months. It starts with the Christmas wish list that the

children receive in October and then after Thanksgiving each cottage designs

their very own Christmas card that is displayed in front of their cottages. As you

drive through the campus you see the beautiful Christmas cards displaying Jesus

love. I look forward to meeting in front of Peabody on a cold afternoon for the tree

lighting ceremony, singing Christmas songs and drinking hot chocolate. This is a

sure indication that we are in the Christmas season here at the home.

Gifts start coming in and we start wrapping gifts and playing Santa and making sure

that each child gets the most desired gifts. We give each child a reindeer name so

that when they peek under the tree, and shake the gift, trying to figure out what it

is, and who it is for, they remain in suspense at least about who it is for.

Then along comes the parties throughout the month that bring such excitement and

joy to our children as well as our staff. It brings tears to our eyes when our children

tell us how this is the best Christmas they ever had, that this is the best place they

have ever lived and how much they love Mr. Rumford for allowing them to live here.

You would think that the actually day of Christmas would be the best day of the

month but it’s not. The Birthday Party for Jesus is the best day of the month. This

is the day that our children perform skits that will have you laughing so hard you

cry, skits so moving and emotional it pulls at our hearts strings and we cry. This is

a joyous and emotional night for all of us.

I, along with our staff, love hearing the Bishop read the Christmas story. Our

children are very quiet and listen intently to the story and often children tell me

that was the best part of the night. After the Christmas story is read, we have

refreshments and then return to the cottages for our grand finale. Our children

are so excited about opening up their gifts that you often hear lots of screams and

yells and believe it or not, “crying”. They cry tears of joy that someone has been this

good to them. All of our staff and visitors move from cottage to cottage sharing in the

excitement and enjoying the special treats that have been prepared by cottage staff.

I live each year waiting on the next Christmas. Once a child has experienced Christmas at the Methodist Home they talk about it until the next Christmas and even years later when in conversation with some of our former residents they always remember the Birthday Party for Jesus and the reading of the Christmas story.

Christmas at Our House at Carpenter’s Way Ranch and Arabella

home for girls is a special one. It means much more than presents and

poinsettias. Each year our children enjoy a special program and dinner

a couple weeks before Christmas that we have come to know as “The

Birthday Party for Jesus”. Each year we have a host church provide our

children a program and nice dinner to enjoy the “Birthday Party”.

We were pleased to have Hunter Road Baptist Church house our

program last year and feed our 26 children. The kids not only got to

open a couple gifts but the program is a reminder of what Christmas is

truly about-the birth of our savior Jesus Christ. As the kids listened to

Rev. Reggie Williams, the pastor at South Columbus UMC, talk about

the true meaning of Christmas and about being thankful for what God

has given to us instead of focusing on what we don’t have; you could

feel a shift in the spirit of the room. The spirit of “what presents am

I going to get” to one of “what gifts has God already given me that I

should thank him for”.

I had a wonderful time at The Birthday Party for Jesus last year. I enjoyed everything Hunter Road Baptist Church and Pastor Williams did for us. The food was great, the speech was inspiring and the gifts were good too. I appreciated them allowing us to be there for the party and for everything they did. –Dequavious S.

If only in my dreams… So many of the young people we

serve wish they could go home for Christmas – and they

wish their homes were safe places for them. They wish

their families enjoyed each other at Christmas. They wish

the tree was pretty, and the cupboard was full, the house

was warm, and the affection was warmer. They dream

of “Family Affair”, “Family Ties”, or “The Waltons” (to

mention a few idyllic TV families of days past).

We can’t always change the families from which they come

– but we can do much about this year’s Christmas, and we

can prepare them for their own family Christmases in years

to come. Dr. Rumford, our President, says that if a child we

serve has one great Christmas to remember, it should be the

Christmas we helped provide. When speaking with alumni,

again and again they talk about how wonderful it was to

have Christmas at The Methodist Home. They recall not

just the wonderful gifts, but the atmosphere, the spiritual

focus, the celebration, the decoration, and the meals, all of

the traditions that make Christmas special.

This is how we prepare the young people we serve to have

great Christmases in the future. We give them healthy

and helpful Christmas traditions, so that when they have

families of their own, they’ll know how to have a great

Christmas. Through the partnership you have with us, we

can give them the Christmas of their dreams – and make

sure their own families reach those dreams in years to

come.

It’s all part of our mission to restore childhoods and

strengthen families. Thank you for helping us make it

happen!

Estate planning 101One and done. In sports, it’s a catchphrase for a team’s loss in the first game or match of a tournament. In estate planning, it’s the mind-set of people who think they’re done once they’ve put a will or trust in place.

In truth, estate planning is an ongoing process. Ensure that your plan fulfills your goals—review it periodically, and adjust it if necessary.

Also consider situations that may call for revisions to your will or other estate-planning documents.

• Marriage or divorce• A major change in your financial status• Birth or adoption of a child or grandchild• Death of a spouse or existing beneficiary• Death of an executor, trustee or other fiduciary• A move to a new state or province• A change in tax or estate planning laws

Try to conduct a thorough review of your plan every five years—even if none of the above events have occurred in your life.

Talk with your attorney or financial advisor. Be sure to look over the beneficiary designations for your retirement and investment accounts, along with your life insurance policies, to determine whether the beneficiary designations should be updated.

Making a will is simple and puts you in charge of your estate—instead of the government—for the benefit of your family and favorite charities. I pray that as you either make or revisit your will, that you will consider remembering the children and youth we serve here in ministry with a gift to The Foundation of The Methodist Home.

Christmas here at The Methodist Home is an incredible month

of watching children and youth experience the outpouring of

love that comes from our Churches, individuals, businesses,

civic groups, and life-long friends who want to make a

difference! One such group who participates every year, is

led by a dear friend of mine, Danny Harrison.

Over the past couple of years, Danny along with some of

his business partners and friends will collect funds for our

Children’s Christmas. They will meet us in the parking lot of

a local store that sells sporting equipment or clothing apparel

and give each child $100.00 to spend in the store that evening.

The group will then break up into teams assisting the children

in their purchases.

It is an outpouring of love that makes your heart feel good

when you experience the true meaning of Christmas as people

from our community exemplify love with a Giving Spirit for

the Children we serve in Ministry here at The Home.

It was an outpouring of love the day God sent His Son,

Emmanuel to become the Lamb of God, who takes away the

Sin of the World. This glorious gift was given with a Giving

Spirit. A Giving Spirit that has been modeled through the

ages.

Thank you, Danny Harrison, for modeling that Giving Spirit

for our Children. Thanks to each of you who respond to our

Christmas Offering by mailing in your donation that allows

us to be in ministry to Children who have been abused and

neglected. Thank you for your Giving Spirit!
