1.0 Introduction
Health is defined by World Health Organization (WHO) as a State of complete
physical, mental, and social well being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Health is a dynamic condition resulting from a bodys constant adjustment and adaptation inresponse to stresses and changes in the environment for maintaining an inner equilibrium
called homeostasis. (Business Dictionary.com , 2011). Health can be divided into two broad
aspects which are physical and mental health.

2.0 Physical Health
Physical health can be defined as an essential part of overall health of an individual
which include everything from physical fitness to overall wellness. A good physical health
means every external part of our body functions properly as it is commonly supposed tofunction. Our eyes are free from any visibility problems or any other problems related to eyes,
our ears hear normally and do not show any sign of problem, we are able to walk , run ,
perform other activities without problem. Physical health also indicates wellness of our
internal body organs and their mutual cooperation. When our internal organs cannot
communicate or coordinate properly then it is a sign of serious health issue which is one of
the major reasons of illness. They function together as an orchestra; problem with any part
can create a disturbing note.
The pie chart below shows that in the U.S 60 percent of the U.S.adults are not actively
in engaging the recommended physical activity, which in return proves why the obesity rate
in the U.S is quite high compared to other countries. Also, around 25 percent of the U.S
adults who are totally inactive in any physical activity. Studies have shown that women are
less active than man, but these days as the health awareness started to spread widely due to
health concerns over the nation, women started to take note and shown interest in taking care
of their health by taking up yoga classes and joining the gym.

Each and every one of us is different and no one is perfect as some people do suffer
from defects in their bodies. Some defects might even be life-threatening. Some people must
in fact, overcome with the defects and live with it for the rest of their life. But fortunately for
some defects there are cures to it with the aid of the advanced technology.
It is important to note that our mind and body are linked, when physical health is
improved, mental and emotional well-being will be automatically be experienced. For
example, exercise strengthens our heart and lungs, but also releases endorphins, powerful
chemicals that energize us and lift our mood. Daily choices of activities engaged will affect a
person physically and emotionally.
2.1Getting enough restBy getting enough rest, one can be more productive, mentally sharp,
emotionally balanced, and full of energy. A healthy daily routine will help to cure
sleeping difficulties and daytime fatigue. Sleeping schedule, bedtime habits, and day
to day lifestyle choices make an enormous difference in the quality of a good night
rest. Consistency is important in getting enough rest , going to bed at the same time
every night and waking up at the same time every day by using an alarm clock will
help to monitor whether ones body is getting enough sleep or not.
Napping is good to make up for lost sleep, like for burning midnight oil or
partying all night long. This strategy allows paying off sleep debt without disturbing
the natural sleeping rhythm which often backfires in insomnia. One should limit naps
to 30 minutes to avoid insomnia attacks.
Caffeine and alcohol should be avoided as well as avoid drinking too many
liquids in the evening which may result in frequent bathroom trips throughout the
night. Staying away from big meals at night could help one avoid stomach trouble and
heartburn that might keep one staying awake at night. Nicotine is a stimulant which
disrupts sleep, so quit smoking as it will make one hard to sleep. (helpguide.org,2011)

2.2Healthy diet is essentialHealthy eating begins with learning how to eat smart its not just what you
eat but how you eat. Smart food choices can reduce risk of illness such as heart
disease, cancer, and diabetes, and many more. In addition, good eating habits can
boost energy, sharpen memory and stabilize your mood. To change eating habit, one
can start slow and make changes to eating habits over time, like adding more
vegetables and fruits into the new eating plan, switching from butter to olive oil when
cooking.
Drinking a more water helps flush waste products and toxins. Eat smaller
portions each time can help to avoid body suffering from heartburn or difficultly in
digesting food consumed.
Fruits and vegetables are the foundation of a healthy diet, they are low in
calories and nutrient dense, which means they are packed with vitamins, minerals,
antioxidants and fibre. Fruit and vegetables should be part of every meal and as a
choice for a snack. The antioxidants and other nutrients in fruits and vegetables help
protect against certain types of cancer and other diseases.
Salt and sugar intake should be controlled as it can add to health and weight
problems.

Regular exercise will help ones body to take charge of anxiety and reduce
stress. For example, aerobic exercise releases hormones that relieve stress and give a
sense of well-being. Exercises also helps to alleviates depression, experts believe that
physical activity increases serotonin, a brain chemical that fights negative thoughts
and depression. In addition, exercise also helps to boosts mood when it body releases
endorphins, which is a powerful chemicals in or brain that energize our spirits and
simply make us feel good.
At the same time, it helps us concentrate and feel mentally sharp for our tasksat hand. It helps us fight with fatigue and improved sleep with a proper exercise
routine. It is advisable to exercise 3 times a week and each time for 30 minutes for a
healthy living. It helps to increase our metabolism rate as well as burn excessive fats

2.4Limit alcohol and avoid cigarettes and other drugsAlcohol, cigarettes and other drugs are stimulants that may unnaturally make
one feel good in the short term , but it does end up with long-term negative
consequences for mood and emotional health.
3.0 Mental health
Mental health or emotional health refers to a persons overall psychological well-
being. It includes the feelings one feel about themselves, the quality of relationships, and
ability to manage feelings and deal with difficulties. Good mental health isnt just the absence
of mental health problems. Being mentally healthy is much more than being free of
depression, anxiety, or other psychological issues. Rather than the absence of mental illness,
mental and emotional health refers to the presence of positive characteristics. While some
people may not have negative feelings, they still need to do things that make them feel
positive in order to achieve mental health.
People who are mentally healthy have a sense of contentment, a zest for living and the
ability to laugh and have fun. They also would have the ability to deal with stress and bounce
back from adversity. The positive characteristics of mental health allow participation in life to
the fullest extent possible through productive, meaningful activities and strong relationship.
Being mentally healthy doesnt mean never going through bad times or experiencing
emotional problems. Disappointments, loss and change is the normal feelings that are parts
and parcel in life that causes sadness, anxiety and stress. The difference is that people with
good emotional health have an ability to bounce back from adversity, trauma, and stress. This
ability is called resilience. People who are emotionally and mentally healthy have the tools
for coping with difficult situations and maintaining a positive outlook. They remain focused,
flexible, and creative in bad times as well as good.

illness according to National Institute ofMental Health. In 2007, an estimated 29.4 million
adults receive mental health service during the past year. Effectively , well documented
treatments for mental illness and substance abuse have been developed and widely
disseminated, including psychotherapy regimens, other psychsocial treatment and

4.0 Conclusion
It is common to consider aspects of health as interdependent, that is, each element
influences the other. Activity in one realm to offset an over-emphasis in another. For example,
someone who is working long hours in an office expending much mental energy and headingtoward burnout may be advised to incorporate more physical exercise into his or her lifestyle
in order to bring the wellness system into balance. This may seem like a simple remedy, but
the implications can be quite profound. By taking some time out to work on the physical
aspect of health the mind gets a well-earned break and would most likely return to work
refreshed and invigorated.
