There were devastating casualties on both sides. Over 2000 US service men perished on the first day alone. From this epic battle comes the famous picture of the flag being hoisted on Mount Suribachi. This weekend there were memorials held in which Japanese and American soldiers stood together to honor their fallen heroes. These services are a testament that regardless of the history or differences between two countries or two people, they can choose to live in peace or heiwa together. In the spirit of international fellowship, this Friday, Tom Hawkins will be welcoming a group of students and teachers from Tracy’s Sister City, Memuro, Japan. The group will be on our campus in the morning, participating in classes and eating lunch with our Hawkins students. This is a wonderful learning opportunity for our students as well as the Memuro students to learn about another culture. Kangei! This Thursday marks the 70th anniversary of the World War II battle of Iwo

Jima. In this battle, the US landed upon and eventually captured the island.

There were devastating casualties on both sides. Over

2000 US service men perished on the first day alone.

From this epic battle comes the

famous picture of the flag being

hoisted on Mount Suribachi. This

weekend there were memorials held

in which Japanese and American

soldiers stood together to honor their fallen heroes. These

services are a testament that regardless of the history or

differences between two countries or two people, they can

choose to live in peace or heiwa together.

In the spirit of international fellowship, this Friday, Tom Hawkins will be

welcoming a group of students and teachers

from Tracy’s Sister City, Memuro, Japan. The

group will be on our campus in the morning,

participating in classes and eating lunch with

our Hawkins students. This is a wonderful

learning opportunity for our students as well as

the Memuro students to learn about another

culture. Kangei!
