The Hebrew and Greek meaning of heart is the feelings, the will, and even the intellect. It’s the center of everything. The heart is the inner-self that thinks, feels and decides. Biblically speaking the word heart has a much broader meaning than it does to the modern day. Nearly all the references to the heart in the bible refer to some aspect of Human personality. In the Old Testament the word heart occurs 2617 times. The new has 1153 uses of the word heart. This shows the importance of its role within the spiritual realm. All emotions have an organic association with our hearts. Deuteronomy 30:6, Jeremiah 31:33b, Jeremiah 32:40, Ezekiel 11:19 Our hearts start as stone! Unable to hear the Spirit speak compassion, love or kindness into us. We are not able to connect with God until we choose God and he replaces our heart of stone with a heart of flesh. The wellbeing of our heart and relationship with God depends on our addressing matters of the heart honestly. As Christians we set our heart upon our God! What we love and fear the most should be our God. Jesus always speaks to the heart. This might be why many of us feel we can’t hear Him! Jesus gets to the heart of matters like no one else can, for he is our heart's creator, redeemer and sanctifier. Matthew 15:18-19, Job 38:36, Jeremiah 9:14, Deuteronomy 4:9, Proverbs 2:10, Deuteronomy 7:17, Acts 11:23, Hebrews 4:12, Ephesians 6:6 Your heart has understanding, imagination, it remembers, it can be wise, it can speak/think for itself, makes decisions, has intention and will! All activities we do have connection to the heart! Matthew 15:18-19 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. Matthew 15:8 “People honor Jesus with their lips, but their hearts are far from me” As Christians we must be aware that we get into ruts! We often make church our god rather than Jesus himself. Our relationship with Christ is more important than our church attendance. Church is an important part of Gods plan, but it doesn’t trump having an intimate relationship with Jesus. Jesus must be the epicenter of our thoughts and concerns. This is so important especially when we mess up! When we as Christians sin, we start what is called a shame spiral. “You do something wrong. You feel bad about it, guilty. So, what happens? You start to think a lot about what you did wrong, thinking how you’re not good enough. You end up doing it again because the only thing on your mind is what you did wrong. And that makes you feel worse. So now you’re thinking even more about how bad you are and what you did wrong. With it always on your mind, what do you do? You do it again. And it’s just never ending until you get your heart focused on something else.” (Psychology Resource) Is your heart reserved for Christ only? Or is yours filled with everything else? A song by Creed said, “What controls your heart controls your eyes.” Jesus in Luke 12:34 said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
