ADVERTISE IN THIS SPACECALL: 281-616-5129

Few Days ago, sitting all alone, watching a late night movie, I started thinking, casting my mind to the beginning of this year, what I planned to achieve, disappointments, business failure, unfulfilment and so on, I was sad, all because; it has not really gone the way I have planned it to be.

But something struck my mind; what if I was dead, what if I find myself on a hospital bed, not able to help myself? what if I'm homeless and can’t even afford a shelter upon my head? Then I realized I have not thanked Him enough for those things He has done, my dwelling was more on those few He has not done.

Many of us are aggrieved with our self, we set a high bar, we are filled with high expectations, we give God ultimatum, “God if you

Since ministers are not allowed to deduct church-related business expenses from their local church employment as self-employed workers, often ministers and other church employees pay unnecessary income taxes on legitimate business expenses. Also, ministers face the impression that they are overpaid because churches include church-related business expenses as part of the minister's pay package.

The Internal Revenue Service has established an acceptable way for churches to reimburse its employees for church-related business expenses as tax-free reimbursements. In accordance with IRS regulations 1.162-17 and 1.274-5T(f), a church can establish an accountable reimbursement plan. With an accountable reimbursement plan, the church can agree to reimburse reasonable church-related business expenses such as the following:

* Convent ions, conferences, seminars, and other workshop fees or costs.

If the continuing education event furthers the minister's learning experience and the educational event does not qualify the minister for a new position, then the church can reimburse him tax-free for associated costs.

* Church-related business travel.

The IRS allows the church to reimburse its employees the IRS standard mileage rate plus parking fees and tolls for business miles driven for church-related purposes.

The IRS does not allow a church to reimburse its minister for commuting miles from home to the church no matter how many times the minister goes back and forth each day. Also, the church can reimburse meals its staff incurs if the required travel takes the minister away from the church field during meal times.

* Costs associated with church-related business overnight trips.

The church can reimburse its minister for lodging, meals, and other costs associated with overnight church-related business travel.

* Subscriptions, books, tapes, CDs, DVDs, internet, equipment, and other similar tools. Sermon resources and other educational material expenses can be reimbursed by the church if the tool has a church-related business connection. Likewise, the church can provide church-related business equipment like PDAs and computers as reimbursable expenses. Under current IRS rulings, cell phones can only be reimbursed if the employee provides a detailed itemized billing of personal and business use of the cell phone. The church can only reimburse the employee for the business portion of the cell phone bill.

* Hospitality expenses required by the church to entertain others.

The church can reimburse its minister's expenses associated with providing a business meal for individuals like prospects or church members if the meal had a church-related purpose. The church can

reimburse the minister for entire cost of the meal.

The Internal Revenue Service requires a few other simple rules to be followed so that the reimbursement can be given tax-free.

1. The minister must provide the church with a written receipt within sixty days of incurring the expense. Receipts are required for all expenditures over $75. If the receipt is not provided, the reimbursement becomes taxable income.

2. The receipt should include the date, amount, church-related business purpose, the location, and, if a hospitality expense, the names of the individuals who were hosted.

3. The church must budget funds for the accountable reimbursement plan. The budgeted funds cannot come from a minister's salary. The funds for the accountable reimbursement plan should be budgeted just like any other church expense, such as utilities or maintenance expenditures. The budgeted funds for the accountable reimbursement plan should not created by reducing a minister's salary.

4. The accountable reimbursement plan is a "use it or lose it" approach. If the minister does not use the entire budget line item designated for reimbursement, he cannot receive the overage. Remember, an accountable reimbursement plan is a church expense, not personal income to the minister.

5. The accountable reimbursement plan

expenses like travel, conventions, hospitality, and others can be grouped together as one budget line item. The reimbursement expenses do not have to be budgeted separately.

6. The accountable reimbursement plan must be church-approved, but the plan does not have to be voted on by the church at church conference. If the church's legal documents empower the finance committee or executive staff to make the determination of budgeted funds for the accountable reimbursement plan, then this is acceptable to the IRS.

7. The committee or staff overseeing the accountable reimbursement plan has the right to determine if a receipt presented for reimbursement is an acceptable expense for reimbursement. The reimbursement must have a church-related business connection.

8. The church should not report any expenses reimbursed properly under an accountable reimbursement plan as taxable income on the minister's W-2.

By adopt ing and funding an accountable reimbursement plan, the church becomes a better steward of the financial blessings God has given to the fellowship. The reimbursement plan also presents a better financial picture of what the true cost of providing the particular ministry position involves. Finally, the accountable reimbursement plan helps honor God's servants who are faithfully serving in the Lord's work.

1. Be Led To RecordAs Christians let the word of God

and the leading of the Spirit be the basis. Every time I get a word to do something, I embark on it with an assurance knowing I have the backing of heaven. In this place there is divine p r o v i s i o n a n d assistance. I can remember my late Mentor and Pastor and I, PASTOR ESKOR MFON, walking up the stairs in church before he went to be with The Lord. And he said to me, “I think it’s time to record.” For me this was a confirmation of what I’d been thinking about that season.

2. Record With A PurposeFor me these two reasons should

be the main reasons for recording a gospel album:

To glorify God. To minister, bless and impact lives. Many record to make money,

assume the lime light and become famous. But the truth is that any album that meets the two criteria above will always make money. But this should not be the focus.

3 . H a v e D i r e c t i o n a n d Focus

Have you ever picked up a gospel a lbum and you really can’t place the style or genre of the work? I have. Lots of Albums in this part of the world lack that d e f i n i t i o n a n d c l e a r m u s i c a l identity. You get to hear rap, jazz, juju, dance hall, w o r s h i p , A f r o , reggae etc, all in o n e a l b u m . Perhaps it’s a way of shooting in all direction expecting one of them to hit. No! No!

You should have a clear sound. Your identity. Something peculiar to you. If you sound close to Sir Ebenezer Obey, then don’t try singing like Marvin Sapp. Be true to your self. Your grace works in your place.

4. Get The Right ProducerThere are great and skillful

producers out there. But not all can properly articulate your sound. In

fact, sometimes, the right person may not necessarily be a big name. I suggest you pray for direction in this area.

5. Be PrayerfulYou should spend time praying

before, dur ing and af ter the

recording. Remember a gospel album is a spiritual project. I remember a number of my studio recordings were worship sessions. Sometimes we’ve had to pray in the spirit extensively before tracking. We’ve had people so overwhelmed, they wept and just fell because we had a strong presence in the studio. People tend to feel the same presence in the recordings like we did feel in the studio.

6. Use Live Instruments

Since music has gone so digital, there is a tendency to do everything with computers. But even when I’m recording digitally, I try as much to fuse in as much analogue or live instruments as I possibly can. LIVE instruments bring LIFE to recordings. And that’s because people play them. You see, God gives grace, but people are the carriers of it. Some musicians, especially the anointed ones bring a certain grace and anointing to a work that digital recording can never

produce.7. Record With A Good Sound

EngineerThis is where we really miss it in

Naija. Notice I didn’t say record in a big or expensive studio. I have realized that a studio is only as good as

the engineer in it. A studio can have the best of gear. But without an engineer with the requisite skill and knowledge to o p e r a t e t h e g e a r s , y o u r recording would still sound poor. And the converse is also true. A studio might have just very basic gear, but with the right engineer, and you can achieve some high quality sound. My engineer in Lagos is very good. Though not

your typical big studio, he seems to know his onions. And every time I’ve had to take the work abroad for further mixes, the engineers abroad have always spoken highly of his work. I recorded songs like IMELA, no other God, wonderful wonder, etc with him (you can reach him on: 08052222668 – alpha Junes studio).

What I also try to do to get that global sound on my recording is do my post productions abroad. Mix and

master. In addition to recording abroad sometimes.

And you see, if God has given you a global vision, you can’t afford to do things like a local person. Sometimes the things that limit our music from having that global reach is poor and mediocre sound quality.

8. The BlessingAfter your album is ready, get it

blessed. I know some folks would argue with this. If you have a pastor, you may just have him speak a word of blessing over it. You see, the guys in the world understand this. They take their projects to places to invoke all sort s on them. I understand the place of a father’s blessing. Our generation is one that despises these things. But you see, I am a product of some of these things. It

works. You may not know this, but before I ever released my first album, I wrote a letter to pastor E A Adeboye, my general overseer, just asking him to speak a word of blessing before I launch out. I can remember h i s words very vividly. And I tell you, they have not

fallen to the ground. I was determined not to go the way of others.

9. Release Your WorkThe beauty of this is that unlike the

past, you have the Internet and social media. And independent online music platforms, and do not need record labels etc to help with distributing your work. And this is what I’ve learnt. If your work is good: anointed and well produced, the marketers will look for you. A good product will always sell itself.

I remember a number of them were reluctant to take up my work when I came out first. But I was not in a hurry, and just kept my focus. However, today, by God’s grace, the story is different.

10. Be Patient“For ye have need of patience, that,

after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.” – Hebrews 10:36.

This is where many folks miss it. They want the break now. The thing must happen immediately. In our kingdom things don’t happen that way. God takes us through a process to mature us, and allow Christ to be formed in us.

So wait!I’ll end with this little story.I began playing the trumpet in 1991.

Yes. Recorded my first album in 2008. But the impact of our ministry has only begun to be felt. So what happened in between? One word….. PROCESS! Character is formed and molded. God tries and works on our hearts, to make sure we don’t blow it when the spot light comes.

Start looking for what to do for your generation, and not what your generation will do for you. There's something in you that the world is waiting for. There's a potential in you that the world needs. No matter the level you've attained, there is still more room for improvement, development, expansion, and increase. You can still do more and do it even better.God has loaded you with so many gifts that you cannot afford to be on fail. Where you are today notwithstanding, you can get up and influence your generation. You are born as a star and as a son of God you need to rise and shine brightly everywhere you go. It will be a heartrending and unfortunate thing, if you died with the deposit of God unused. Don't allow your background to put your back on the ground and leave you on the floor. Where you were born does not determine your destiny and success in life; the decision is yours to make. Most people succeed in life, not because they have opportunity, but they have determination. Do not allow your present circumstances to move you to compromise your faith. Stretch yourself and soar beyond your personal gifts through determination, self-development, and discipline. You can make the world a better place.According to Mike Murdock, the great author, evangelist, and songwriter of our time, “Every man will be remembered for two things, the problem you solved and the one you created.” I may not guess your age exactly now. But whatever your age, the question I would like to ask you is very simple: Since you were born, what impact have you made? How many souls have you affected? How many people have benefited from your

existence? What happens around you or the economic situation of this world does not matter; it is what happens in you that matters. Once again, what impact have you made since you were born?People must have a positive change by meeting you. Your association with them is not to decrease them but to add value to their lives. When people come across you they must become better for having met you. You must be a blessing to them. Have an effect on your generation, and the environment you live in as a matter of necessity, thus making a mark on the lives of people. Are there people that are now living peacefully and perfectly because of their interaction with you? Have you contributed anything positive to the lives of members of your family circle and your close society? Has your life positively affected other lives? Are people who are close to you enhanced or worse off?Dare to see deeper than what others see. Live ahead of your time, ahead of your equals, above your circumstances, and forbid the immediate to disallow your ultimate. Read more on this topic in my book, Victory To Victory.

CENEWS: Tell us about your upcoming album launch?Grace Aina: It is an album that is focused on praise and worship songs, a time to worship God. With Songs that are simple and easy for the church to follow and sing to God. It is more like a worship event. What is music to you?Music is a gift from God to mankind. In the world music is used to create a mood. It is a powerful tool from God to mankind. In the bible music was used to bring down the presence of God. When Elisha did not hear from God, he said bring me a minstrel and when the minstrel came and played music, He began to hear from God. It is a gift from God for us to communicate with Him, to create whatever atmosphere we want, for us to invoke the Spirit of God and bring down His presence. So what is the title of your Album?God's GraceHow many tracks? We have 12 songs, actually 13. We put a bonus song on there for the world, about what is going on in the world today.Which is your favorite Track?I thought I had a favorite track until I kept listening to all the songs and I realized I don't have a favorite track. I love all of them. I believe the Holy Spirit specially selected every song on this album. I can't say I like this one more than this one.Is this your first album? No this is my fourth but I call this a new beginning album, It is a new start album,So how long have you been singing professionally? We l l i t d e p e n d s o n w h a t professionally means, I have just been singing since I knew how to singLet us take it from the first album recording, when was that?I was maybe 16 or 17, I was still in high school. For this album launch, who are the other guest ministers?Well definitely my brother, He is an anointed minister and then Sister Vic. So Bro Chosen, Sister Vic, Dee Jones, David Adesokan, Sunny Sax and

Krestup from DallasIn the next 5 years, where do you want to see yourself in the music ministry?I want all the songs that God gives me to be sung all over the world and connect to God with the songs. So really where I want to be this year, next year, every year, forever is the place where Music that God gives through me is blessing the whole world.Do you have a particular style?I will call it Christian Music and any style God gives for a song, we sing it.Has there been any moment in your life when you were pushed to a low point where you said above all, I still need to record musicEverybody has life challenges and things that shake them but we just stay with God. Some of the songs were written during those times that I really thought things were going to collapse, but then there is God. God is constant, He doesn't change. A lot of the songs came out of that, came out of times

when I needed God and He showed up. There are songs about when I was down, songs about Thanking Him for what He has done and songs worshiping Him just for who He is. God has been constant in every part of our life. Can you give us the names of some tracks we should look forward to in this Album?I love all the songs. The first song is Testify that I'll tell everybody about what the Lord has done, it is just saying come and see what the Lord has done. There is the one about the world issues and calling on God to revive us and then there is a song I call the wordless song, anybody can sing the s ong . I t i s Ahhahhahh and Ohhhohhohh. You know when God does a miracle for you and you don't know what to say, you say Ahh and Ohh. People should look out for that one.Would you like to add anything else?I just want to tell everyone that whatever gift God has given you, use it. I have been singing since I could

remember. I remember as a child I will stand on the edge of the roundabout in our house in Nigeria and sing very loud, I wanted the whole neighborhood to hear me and I will picture myself singing in front of many people. I didn't know how it will happen but I just believed and God is doing it, He is making a way. So whatever gift we have, no mater how long it takes, no matter how little it is, when we use it for God, He is going to blow it up and make something great out of it.Thank you very muchGrace AinaYou are welcome.

HealthMattersMatters

You may feel like you should always be in control of your emotions, but you can't ignore

the pounding headaches, t ight muscles, and short temper that you are suddenly experiencing. Everyone suffers from stress at some point in life, but by following some simple tips, you'll soon be back to your cheerful self. Here are 4 tips to eliminate stress:Lean on GodGod knows exactly what you need and is just waiting for you to call on Him for help. One of my favorite scriptures

Those of us with chronic illnesses, such as fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome, already have

enough going against us that we certainly don't need to be making things worse for ourselves. It can be difficult NOT to though. In the Western civilization culture we live in something must be "wrong" with you if you aren't on the go 24/7. Surely you must be flawed if you're not always operating at top speed. Everyone expects us to work long hours at jobs that can be incredibly stressful, they expect us to be the perfect mate, parent, or child. They also expect us to keep a spotless home, have an immaculate yard, and wonder what is wrong if you're not "keeping up with the Joneses." If you aren't "keeping up with the Joneses" then there must be something terribly wrong with you. Shaking off this kind of thinking can be difficult, but it's essential in helping us cope with our physical ailments. Not only will it help with our ailments, but it will also help reduce stress and even give one a better sense of self worth. It does take some time and work though so one needs to be prepared for that. Following is a list of nine things that we need to be on the lookout for in our lives:One: OVER EXHERTION One needs to go slow and steady. Those of us with these conditions need to pace ourselves. We know our bodies better than anyone else and so we know our limits better than anyone else. If we do more than what our bodies can handle we are going to get worse. We are going to pay for it later so stop when your body says

concerning stress relief can be found in Philippians 4: 6-7. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by p raye r and supp l i c a t i on w i th thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."Take It SlowTaking deep breaths f rom the diaphragm allows full oxygen exchange throughout the chest and lungs. When you are feeling stressed, sit down in a comfortable position, put one hand on

stop and if it's something you know will worsen your condition then avoid it altogether. Two: SELF CR IT IC ISM We have legitimate medical conditions. Nobody knows better than you the reality of your illness, so cut yourself some slack. When you notice your mind starting to go in a negative direction stop your thoughts and turn them around. Remember that you're doing your best and your best is all that you can do.Three: ACCEPTING OTHER PEOPLE'S NEGATIVE VIEWS No matter how strong we are or how well we think we are handling our conditions, it's still going to hurt when ignorant people accuse us of being lazy, worthless, complainers, whiners, or even crazy. However, don't believe them. What they are claiming is not true. Remember that people like us that have to deal with what we deal with, go through the pain that we have to go through, are almost always stronger and more capable than those who criticize us.Four: SELF BLAME Did you ask to be afflicted with a chronic, often times debilitating, painful illness? Was it your choice to suffer through this pain, fatigue, and depression on a 24/7 basis? The answer to both of these questions is clearly "NO." Regardless of what a few uninformed, hurtful, inconsiderate people might say or think, your suffering is not your fault.Five: UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS This is true with both positive and negative expectations. Let's take a look at unrealistic positive expectations first. Many times we put all of our hope into a

your chest, and the other on your stomach. Breathe in through your nose. If you are deep breathing correctly, you will see the hand on your stomach rise as you breathe, while the hand on your chest should only move slightly. Repeat 10 times and feel yourself relax.JournalYou may feel like your thoughts are all over the place, and writing down how you are feeling will help you to clarify thoughts and put them into the proper perspective. Make a habit of journaling regularly, and you will discover the things that make you happy, while

e l im ina t i ng t ox i c peop le and situations.Practice GratitudeThis tip has been the most helpful when I am feeling stressed. There are so many things to be thankful for, that even the worse problems don't seem that bad. Practice gratitude by making a gratitude list of everything you're thankful for. I like to do this in the morning and before I go to bed. Include everything you can think of. There is good food to eat, family and friends to treasure, a warm house to sleep in, and most of all a God who loves an leads us.

particular treatment, usually it's one that is new to us. When we do this we set ourselves up for a huge let down when it doesn't magically cure our ailments. As you are treated for your condition(s) approach it with the view that any improvement at all is a victory. We need to be realistic about our treatment as it typically needs to involve multiple approaches to make any progress.Let's move on to unrealistic negative expectations. When one tries a variety of treatments and has no success it can make them feel extremely discouraged as if nothing is ever going to give them any relief at all. Because of this, it can cause one to be hesitant to even try new treatments that might help them.Six: PUTTING YOUR NEEDS LAST Many people will put all of their energy and effort into people around them, their jobs, their volunteer activities, etc., and end up having nothing left for themselves. This doesn't work, it's a guaranteed road to burn out and worsening of one's condition. You've got to take care of yourself, make yourself a priority, or you will be less able to deal with your own suffering and you will get so drained you'll be of no use to anyone because you have nothing left to give. When coping with fibromyalgia and CFS taking care of yourself is essential. Someone might accuse you of being selfish, but with what we persistently have to deal with taking care of ourselves is simply survival.Seven: THROWING IN THE TOWEL TOO SOON When you start a new treatment of some kind, keep in mind that it can

4 Tips to Relieve Stress

actually take a while before any improvement is noticed. If you "throw in the towel" too soon you might miss out on something that could really benefit you. Make sure and allow enough time for your body to adjust.Eight: STRESS Every single day brings stress, and having a chronic illness adds to and magnifies the results of that stress. Our symptoms are drastically exasperated by stress. It's important to find ways that help you reduce and handle stress.Nine: "WHY ME?" - It's only natural for us to want to know why we are ill? Is it in our genes? How much of it is diet? Do I have an unknown parasite? Is it something in the environment? Is God punishing me for something? Why do I have to suffer with this out of all the people in the world? Asking these kinds of questions doesn't really serve a purpose. In fact, they can steer you down a road of blame, guilt, and stress. What is far more important than "Why" is "What is happening?" and "What can I do?" These are the questions that help us find the causes of our symptoms and can lead to effective treatments. Conclusion:Don't be so hard on yourself, being afflicted with a condition was not your choice nor is it your fault. Take it easy on yourself, take it day by day, handle stress, and don't listen to the ignorant, uninformed comments and opinions of others.Do what you can, that's all you can do.

An Egyptian priest is calling on president Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to protect his historic church from being demolished by a Muslim judge and his two sons who are trying to steal the land to build a shopping mall.

The U.S.-based Christian persecution monitoring agency International Christian Concern is reporting that the Greek Orthodox Church of Virgin Mary in Rashid City of the Beheira governorate continues to be victimized by attacks from a retired Muslim judge named Mohamed Mostafa Kamel Tirana and his two sons, who are also judges.

Since 2008, the family of j u d g e s h a v e a t t e m p t e d numerous times to use their legal clout to take ownership of the church and its property. Although the church dates back t o t he 1840 s , t he j udge maintains that the plot that the church sits on is his family's ancestral land.

According to ICC, the judge claimed that he bought the property from the orthodox church in 1990. However, it wasn't until 2008, when the Greek Orthodox Church gave the building to the Coptic Orthodox Church that the judge tried to f i le h i s a l leged property purchase with the local real estate authority.

"After we received the church in January of 2008, the judge began to dispute with us, alleging that he bought the church from the Greek Orthodox community in 1990, and used his

that he doesn't think that will change soon."Morally, I see (IS) as a deviant, bloodthirsty tyrannical group," the source said. "I don't know why I would join them. A great point of contention has been IS' attacks and conquest of several cities in Syria, which went against al Qaeda's wishes.IS has recruited several other known terror groups, including Nigerian militants Boko Haram. Other groups from across the Middle East, Afghanistan, Pakistan and North Africa have all rallied under the jihadist banner as well.Al-Shabaab made international news headlines in April when it murdered 152 people, mostly Christian students, in an attack on Garissa University College in Kenya. T h e c h u r c h ' s l a w y e r, Mnchaoy Ghanim Gaber, finds it strange that anyone would wait nearly two decades to register a property with the real estate authority.

"If we suppose that this person bought the church in 1990, why didn't he register it after purchasing it directly?" Gaber asks. "Why [would] he wai t 18 years a f ter the purchase to register it?"

In response to the judge's attempt to file his alleged contract with the real estate authority, the church filed a lawsuit against the judge.

"His purpose of taking over the church is demolishing its building and rebuild[ing] big shopping malls on its land," Awad asserted.

Since the church has filed a lawsuit against the judge, the judge has, on many occasions, hired bulldozers, frontloaders and a gang of men to destroy the church.

In September 2008, the judge, his sons and other Muslims ascended on the chu rch p rope r t y w i th a bulldozer and destroyed the church's fence, attacked the church's security guard and destroyed parts of the church building, a church member told ICC.

Gaber then filed a police report. However, the case was dropped after the hired men lied to prosecutors.

"The thugs who were hired by the judge to demolish the church said to the prosecution during the investigation with them that [it was] Father Luka who asked them to demolish the church," Gaber explained. "The prosecution didn't take any legal action against the judge and his two sons and dropped the complaint, which we filed against them."

Uganda is mostly a Christian country, but there are some places in the eastern region that are dominated by Muslims. Authorities have already warned about the proliferation of Islamist extremism in the country as a consequence of the army's involvement in the fight in Somalia against Al-Shabab terrorists.

In the wake of the incident, the Ugandan woman's husband said he knows her attackers are still looking for him, but he is contending for God's protection. He is also praying that God will continue to grant him the courage to share the gospel to more people and demonstrate Jesus' love to them

A Ugandan woman was murdered by a Muslim mob for continuing to share her Christian faith even after her family had been warned to stop doing so.

Mamwikomba Mwanika, a Christian mother of eight, last week opened the door of her home in Kalampete village to see a mob of Muslims who wanted to see her husband and reminded her that they have already been warned to stop preaching about their faith. The crowd reacted angrily when they learned that the Ugandan woman's husband was not home, and she was dragged outside and beaten to death, according to a Morning Star News cited by Christian Today (CT).

"Your husband has followed the religion of his brother, and

we had warned you people to stop these activities," CT quotes the mob's statement to Mwanika. "But our message has landed on deaf ears."

George Mwanika, the Ugandan woman's husband, is also a Christian. Last month, his brother Samson Nfunyeku was killed for also sharing his faith and debating with Islamic scholars, the Gospel Herald

Dating the Christian WayI am trying to date the Christian

way. Before I was following Jesus as a adult, I was very self-centered. I dated several men in college, and then went onto to the next one when I was ready, without any real consideration of their feelings.

After my adult commitment to follow Christ, I decided that I was not going to "date" in that way any more. I decided that I was going to ask God to pick out a partner for me. I did not want to wind up divorced like my parents did. The main concept of dating seemed to be a series of relationships, and if they did not work out, you broke off with the person. That did not seem to me a way to learn to have a permanent, committed relationship.

I got impatient, and tired of waiting for God to pick a partner for me. I started to date someone, and God told me that was not the person He had for me. I broke up with him, before our emotions got too involved, and decided to wait. Later, I met my husband at a prayer meeting. At the meeting, God told him that I was his future wife. God told me one week later that he was my future husband.

Knowing that God picked us for

Okay, let's take a moment to really get real.

What does a good Christian single gal do on a Friday night when everyone else is either otherwise engaged or on a date?

I'm serious. After years of not having any one consistent person tohang out with every weekend, I got pretty good at pretending I was fine, despite the inner turmoil I truly felt when anticipating yet another night to remind me that God had not yet brought my husband into my life.

It's enough to drive a girl crazy and force her to lock herself at home, mourning her lack of connection with the world around her - maybe even desperately search those Christian singles sites in hopes to avoid that very situation come the next week! I'm not referring to anyone you know, of course....

Honestly, when one is in the trenches of waiting for God's best, it is often lonely and seems unfair that God would withhold what appears to

each other really helped us over some tough spots in our marriage. My husband loved me for who I was, unconditionally, with all my quirks and faults. I respected him for his love of God and the way God used him to lead us together in life. We were open and honest about each other's medical conditions, finances, and other issues.

Fast forward about 30 years, and now I am a widow. I am going to adopt the same approach, and not "date" just to be going out with men. It is not fair to the man, if I am really not the one for him or if he is not the one for me. I realize this time around God may put someone in my life in a new way, perhaps through some Christian internet dating sites. I am going to be open and honest with anyone that I communicate with. I will not let my emotions control my relationship decisions. I would rather be single than in a marriage God did not want me in.

There is a part inside us that only God can satisfy. We have to be careful to not expect a spouse or any other human to fill that spot. God has to be first, and only then will the relationship be right between friends or marital partners.

be the norm for any other person in the world. Especially for Christian singles - both girls and guys - it seems even more unfair, since most have a godly

conviction that keeps us from clubbing and barhopping to find someone to spend the night with.

In this modern age, many options are available for "hooking up" even in the Christian singles realm. Yet how do you know which options are valid pursuits? How do you know you aren't walking into just another worldly place with a Christian facade? And is that what God is really expecting you to do

on Friday night? Before I address the practical aspects

of these questions, I will do a quick perusal of the Bible to find God's deep concern for all of the bored Christian singles out there....

Okay, I found it - the one Scripture that truly addresses our situation and gives the deep encouragement we are seeking: Psalm 68:6 - "God sets the solitary in families."

Um, Leah, did you forget something? WE'RE STILL SINGLE. We're not in families yet....that's why we're reading this article!

Hear me out! I really truly believe this Scripture captures the heart of God for the lonely on a Friday night. Now, read it again with me: God sets the solitary in families.

Did you catch that? Not "a family" like you might have read it at first. Families. Plural.

I know, I might get in t r o u b l e f o r m y o w n interpretation of the Word of God, because truthfully, I'm not a Hebrew scholar. But I believe that the Holy Spirit sometimes downloads a new interpretation for us in Scriptures we thought we understood. I was startled today by the divine thought that maybe I had looked at this passage in the wrong light. Just bear with me in a little folly, as Paul puts it.

We are not limited to waiting for that one family that God will bring us that includes a husband and kids. God does not simply place us in a family. God sets us in families.

Families include those who raised us, the people we worship with, the groups we associate with, and those who identify with us. One person can have multiple families. I'm sure you understand this

concept already, because if you're like me, y o u probably have multipl

e spheres of influence.I have my church families - plural there

because I've been part of a few different churches in my life, my writer family, my symphony family, and my work family, in

addition to the family that raised me. In the extremely rare event that some event isn't going on one night, I am sure I can find at least one person to talk to or hang out with. Now I do recognize that I have the vast advantage of living in an urban area, so I can't say I really know what it's like to live in a small town and only have two friends.

Yet, I can point to the promise of God for those in that situation. Maybe you have built your life in a place where there are few around you. This does not exclude you from that Scripture. God sets the solitary in families! Look around - there are so

m a n y places in which to f i n d a f a m i l y . Don't limit you r se l f to those o f y o u r o w n demographic; you

may be surprised to find out who might be your friend!

I will now present a list of potential families. Lo and behold, this also solves your Friday night problem! See, I told you I had a practical application.

- Church activities- Small groups- Book clubs- Bowling leagues- Aerobics classes- Music groups- Writing groups- Any other possibilities? What do

you like to do?What are the different families in

your life? And why are you sitting at home, moaning about your loneliness and lack of a spouse? Get out there and spend some time with your family! No need to wonder what you're going to do on the weekend - I'm sure someone else needs your input and encouragement today.

And yes, there is even some hope - I won't deny the possibility - that you might also find that one special someone with which to spend another Friday night.

For now, however, enjoy the nights you have to spend with your family. When you do find that special someone, you'll already have a place to hang out!

Send your comments to [email protected] or you can contact us if you have article to share

with us on Christian relationship.

s pastor of a church, it is your

Aresponsibility to see that the finances are handled in a

professional manner and protect the financial foundation of your church. Depending upon the size of your church, you may have the direct responsibility of the finances, or they may be delegated to someone in your staff or advisory board. But regardless of your involvement, the final responsibility is yours. What I want to discuss today are four mistakes pastors make with church finances.

The first mistake is symbolized by a term we have all heard: “Jack of all Trades”. Too many pastors have the “Savior” syndrome, and think they can do everything, or that they have to do everything. Jack of all Trades has a nice ring to it, but later it was added to with “and master of none”. This describes the problem. Trying to be the financial person for the church without knowing how to do the job. Someone may say, “So what’s the problem? I just deposit the money in the bank and write the checks.” If you don’t manage your money and tell it where to go, it will go wherever it wants to go. Someone has to be in charge of the church finances, and if you aren’t, that void will be filled by something else.

Recognize your abilities and what you must give away to someone else. Now I am not saying to “dump” it on someone, but entrust it to an individual who either knows how to do it or can be trained. I have the best doctor. She is very good, but there are times when she knows she is at the limit of her ability and will refer me to a specialist. Know what you can do and don’t try to do a job that you are “master of none”.

The second mistake pastors make in handling the church finances is trying to do a job that is outside of their call. As a pastor, you have been called to “equip the saints for the work of the ministry”. In Acts 6, the d i s c i p l e s f o c u s e d o n t h e i r responsibility of continually being in prayer and ministry of the Word. You were not called to be a financial expert, so don’t think that is what you

have to be. Do your calling and find someone in your church, or hire a consultant to handle the financial responsibilities, but you have to take care of the flock that God has placed into your care. The world calls that “outsourcing”. I call it common sense.

A church is two things: a place where people come to receive Jesus and grow spiritually. But it is also a business. And when I say that, I mean that it has to be managed financially like a business. When I worked for Oral Roberts, we had a full financial department. Our job was to manage the finances so that Oral had the financial resources to do what God called him to do. For a church to grow and support the work of the ministry, it must have a sound financial base. That’s why finances are to be handled professionally.

The third mistake pastors make with church finances is not planning the finances like they plan other church activities. You need a budget. Sure I know that is a bad word, but get used to it because it’s not going away. A budget is not a square you fill and say, OK, I have one and then put it away in your files. No, it is a road map for the year and you have to follow it in order to reach your goal. Once you have the budget, then you need a plan for following that budget throughout the year. If you are not on budget, find out why, make the necessary adjustments and get back on track. If you don’t, you will run out of money before you run out of year. A good accounting system is needed to track your income and expenses. All of that takes time, and is a time stealer from the pastor’s prayer and ministry time. If you are not a financial expert, then delegate that to a qualified person but remember you cannot delegate responsibility. As the pastor the final responsibility remains with you.

The fourth mistake pastors make is trying to be too spiritual with the church finances. Many of us have heard the leadership in Bible school talk about “faith checks”. There are places for faith, and your church finances is one of those places, but when it comes to writing a check, you

better have money in the account to cover it because your bank doesn’t operate on faith. They work in reality. I know because I was a banker and b a n k e x a m i n e r for 25 years. If you want cooperation from your banker, talk to him in real terms. Share your dreams and goals with him. Then go to your a d v i s o r y board and talk faith and make p l a n s f o r your church.

If you are g o i n g t o expand or purchase a building or add on to y o u r e x i s t i n g b u i l d i n g , this is where you and your a d v i s o r y board talk faith. Get God’s plan. Then by faith reach out and receive the manifestation. Then go back to your banker and talk reality.

Having been a pastor for 24 years, I know the responsibilities you have of praying and preparing to minister to your flock. You have been trained to do this and it is your calling from God. But the finances of your church are also important and must be handled professionally. How you handle the church finances is a witness to the people in your church and community. They are watching and will make judgment of you and your church based on your financial integrity.

By placing qualified people to assist you in managing your church finances, planning properly and have an organized operating process, you

will take stress off of yourself, gain valuable time to minister to God’s flock in your church and establish a sound financial base for the church.
