Comings and Goings – The Christchurch Tramway
The present Tuckton Bridge was opened in 1905
and is reputed to be one of the earliest surviving
pioneered it. It replaced a previous wood and iron
weight of an electric tramway.
Tuckton Bridge was tested by running three
tramcars over it, each laden to a weight of
tons were also placed on the footways to
of an inch. Having passed this test, in the
eight airily decorated tramcars full to capacity
with dignitaries and invited guests departed
Christchurch. The only delay on the journey was
the necessary halt to switch the power from
a conduit feed (which was buried in the road
between the rails to avoid unsightly wires in
Bournemouth town centre) to an overhead supply.
Mayor of Christchurch invited the Mayoress of
Bournemouth to cut a tape barrier, there being
‘no massive gates to unlock, or bars to draw’.

Tuckton Bridge the chocolate and cream liveried
need to turn round for the return journey, but
the mid-‐1930s was there a need for a turntable,
Christchurch at 16 minute intervals throughout the
day and the fare included the halfpenny toll for
crossing Tuckton Bridge.
To generate the electricity for the tramway a
building is now Grade II listed and considered to
to survive in England. In 1991 it opened as a
restored 1914 Bournemouth tramcar.

reportedly based on the need to spend a ‘seven

the engineering heritage of Christchurch.
