Beisser, Deacon January 3, 2021 — Solemnity of the Epiphany of the
Lord
Dear Parishioners, I was reading an article about the extreme
poverty that existed in America during the Great Depression.
According to the article, the U.S. Government would send agents to
look for the poorest farmers from the remote mountainous areas of
the nation in order to issue them some grant monies to help buy
seed and feed for their livestock. The government sought out these
farmers because they were believed to be the hardest hit by the
Depression. One agent reported that he had come upon an old woman
from the hills of Kentucky living in a horrible little shack. It
had no floor; the roof leaked; there was no glass in the windows;
and there was a very little heat in the winter. The old woman had
just the very basic essentials and was barely able to survive. The
agent said to her, “If the U.S. Government were to give you $350,
what would you do with it?” Her answer was instant, “Why, I’d give
it to some poor person!” The agent was shocked and said, “Lady, how
could you give the money to someone else when you are so poor
yourself?” “Who said I was poor?” she snapped at him. “It ain’t
money that makes a person poor or rich, Mister! I may not have a
lot of money, but I sure ain’t poor!” It is true that there are
many, many people who have lots of money — who in reality are quite
poor. And, it is also quite true that there are many people who
have little or no money but are truly rich. May the start of a new
year help each of us to keep our perspectives on how we view one
another. Happy New Year!
Love, Fr. Bill

WORSHIP AID FOR JANUARY 2-3
Opening Hymn — We Three Kings
We three kings of Orient are; bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, Moor and mountain, following yonder star.
O star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright;
Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect
light.
Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain, gold I bring to crown him
again, King forever, Ceasing never over us all to reign. (O star of
wonder…)
Frankincense to offer have I: incense owns a Deity nigh; Prayer
and praising Gladly raising, worship him, God on high. (O star of
wonder…) Text: 88 44 6 with refrain; based on Matthew 2:1–11. Text
and music: Carols, Hymns and Songs, 1863; John H. Hopkins, Jr.,
1820–1891, alt.
Gloria (sung)
Gloria in excelsis Deo, Gloria, Gloria! Gloria in excelsis Deo,
et in terra, terra pax.
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of
good will. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to
people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we
glorify you, we give you thanks, we give you thanks, thanks for
your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.
(Gloria in excelsis Deo…)
Lord, Jesus Christ, only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God,
Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy
on us, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right
hand of the Father, have mercy on us, have mercy on us. (Gloria in
excelsis Deo…)
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you
alone are the Most High, the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy
Spirit, in the glory of God, the glory of God the Father. (Gloria

CHRIST THE KING CHURCH TOLEDO, OHIO (Member of the St. Agnes
Deanery) January 3, 2021
WORSHIP AID FOR JANUARY 2-3
Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and
earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of
God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from
Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial
with the Father; through him all things were made. (All bow at the
following words through “and became man.”) For us men and for our
salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was
incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered
death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance
with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the
right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the
living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who
proceeds from the father and the Son, who with the father and the
Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the
prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess
one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the
resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Preparation of the Gifts
May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise
and glory of His name, for our good and the good of all His holy
Church. Sanctus
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full
of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in
the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Memorial
Acclamation
Save us, Savior of the world, for by your Cross and
Resurrection, you have set us free. Invitation to Communion
Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but
only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
Please remain at your seat to receive Holy Communion. The
ministers will come to you through the empty row in front of
you.
As the minister approaches, please stand if you are able and
remove your mask. You are asked to please receive Holy Communion in
the hand.
After receiving Communion, you may kneel or be seated and
replace your mask.

WORSHIP AID FOR JANUARY 2-3
Communion Hymn — The First Nowell
The first Nowell, the angel did say, was to certain poor
shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay keeping
their sheep, on a cold winter’s night that was so deep.
Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel.
They looked up and saw a star shining in the east, beyond them
far; And to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both
day and night. (Nowell…)
And by the light of that same star three wise men came from
country far; To seek for a king was their intent, and to follow the
star wherever it went. (Nowell…)
This star drew nigh to the northwest, o’er Bethlehem it took its
rest, And there it did both stop and stay, right over the place
where Jesus lay. (Nowell…)
Then entered in those wise men three, full rev’rently upon the
knee, And offered there, in his presence, their gold and myrrh and
frankincense. (Nowell…)
Then let us all with one accord sing praises to our heav’nly
Lord; Who with the Father we adore and Spirit blest for evermore.
(Nowell…)
Text: Irregular with refrain; trad. English carol, 17th cent.;
verse 6, alt. Music: Trad. English carol, 17th cent. Act of
Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Blessed
Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You
into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You
sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace
You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. Closing Hymn — As
With Gladness Men of Old
As with gladness men of old did the guiding star behold; As with
joy they hailed its light, leading onward, beaming bright; So, most
gracious Lord, may we evermore your splendor see.
As they offered gifts most rare at that manger crude and bare;
So may we this holy day, drawn to you without delay, All our
costliest treasures bring, Christ, to you, our heav’nly King.

Searching for God in the Movies Movies are close encounters with
the stories of our lives. They help us identify the many voices
inside us and delve deeply into
our feelings, desires, and passions. Some are rendezvous with
the shadow side of our life. They en-courage us to exercise our
values and to take stock of our commit-ments. They show us how to
deal with change, loss, success, failure,
good, and evil. Many reveal signs of God’s presence in daily
life. This series is intended for those 18 years of age or older.
Join us on Tuesday afternoons, 1:00-3:30 p.m., in our Parish Center
Meeting Room. Dates are: January 5, 12, 19, and 26, and February 2
(February 9 if needed for snow day.) Movies are: The Bucket List,
The Iron Lady, The In-tern, Casablanca, and Meet Joe Black. To make

Does your marriage need a tune up?
Or even a major overhaul?
Sometimes a marriage can run along fine and then things change.
They may need your time and attention. Some-times lines of
communication break down and they need repair. Sometimes our focus
moves away from our mar-riage and family and needs a little
redirection. Sometimes a fair or average marriage is just not
enough. Have you ever thought to yourself, “How can I make my
marriage better?” If so, Retrouvaille can help. Retrouvaille is
mar-riage program for couples whose marriage has become off course.
It begins with a weekend program that can help get your
relationship back on track. It is an effective program that has
worked for thousands of couples, and it can work for your marriage.
The next Retrouvaille weekend in this area is Friday-Sunday,
January 22-24. For more information, call Jeff and Robyn at
419-481-1116 or visit www.helpourmarriage.com.
