A BUSY, BUSY FEBRUARY
For the shortest month of the year there is a great deal
happening in February! OnThursday, February 10, representatives of
all the missions and parishes in theDiocese of Georgia will come to
Valdosta for the Diocesan Convention, sort of a business meeting
and family
reunion. The convention will be at The Rainwater Center,
beginning with a service of Evening Prayer at 6:00 onThursday. The
convention meeting will be during the day on Friday, followed by a
service of Ordination at 4:30,also at the convention center. I am
very pleased to say that Christ Church's own Walter Hobgood will be
ordained aTransitional Deacon at that service and I really
encourage our church family to come and take part in that
specialevent. The convention will continue through the morning on
Saturday, adjourning around noon. One aspect of theconvention is a
room filled with displays and presentation by the various
organizations and ministries of thediocese; it is always worth a
visit to see the amazing diversity on display. On Monday, February
14, Valentine’s Day,the parish, and guests are invited to a
Valentine's Day gourmet dinner prepared by Chef Mac Parks, a
specialoccasion for a special day. Tickets are available, though
limited in number. The proceeds will assist our continuingcapital
funds drive in support of our building project. Tar+ will be
travelling to the Dominican Republic onFebruary 16 as the official
representative of the Diocese of Georgia and our Bishop Benhase to
attend theconvention of that diocese. Then at the close of the
month, there will be a VOCARE for our college students atCamp Rock
Eagle. All this in 28 days!
Also, our own Molly Stevenson and Tar Drazdowski+ are nominees
to attend General Convention in 2012 andLucy Tomberlin a nominee
for the Diocesan Ecclesiastical Court; all to be voted on at
convention. Keep them inyour prayers as this busy, busy month
unfolds.
Blessings, Peter+
The Rev. Tar Drazdowski will represent the Dioceseof Georgia and
Bishop Scott Benhase at the annualconvention of the Diocese of the
Dominican RepublicFebruary 18 and 19. She will also attend the
meeting ofthe Dominican Development Group as the
Bishop’srepresentative. The group is a consortium of 11 diocesesto
help build the infrastructure of the Dominican church. As money from
the national church for internationaloutreach shrinks, this group
assumes a greater import -ance for helping to build the Episcopal
church in that nation.
“It is an awesome honor to be allowed to participatein the work
of the dynamicDominican church,” said TheRev. Drazdowski.
She will remain in country toconduct another “discovery tour”for
the Diocese of Georgia,February 22 - 28. This trip isdesigned to

Dr. Hanae Kanno, assistant professor in the Division of Social
Workat Valdosta State University, returned to Valdosta from her
Christmasvacation in her native home in Tokyo, Japan, in early
January to beginteaching for spring semester. She brought with her
Christmas cardsfrom the members of her home church, St.
Margaret’s.
“I arrived home at the very best time for going to the church to
tellthem about my new church family,” said Dr. Kanno. “At the
church inJapan it is traditional to share a Christmas meal
theSunday before Christmas. So on December 19, I took a
poster I had made from photographs on the Christ Church Valdosta
website that showed Fr. Peterand Happy, the choir, a picture of the
church, some of the services, the flowers, and many of themembers
of the church,” she said.
Dr. Kanno told the 60 people of St. Margaret’s that Christ
Church members had given her a newchurch home, and we had sent
cards to them. She made a box, just as we had, for the members
todeposit their cards to be given to us. She gave Fr. Peter and
Happy cards with artwork of theMadonna and Child that were sent
from the priest at St. Margaret’s. Welcome Home, Dr. Kanno.

The Forgotten DesertMothers: Sayings, Lives,
and Stories of EarlyChristian Women.
By Laura Swan. Paulist Press, 2001.
Laura Swan has created an invaluable record ofearly Christianity
in the lives and words of the desertammas. Here were women who left
the Roman worldin an attempt to deepen their spirituality, to let
go of allbut a single-minded pursuit of God; and here is a bookthat
guides us to walking that path despite thebusyness of our daily
lives. After discussing the “desertway,” Swan gives brief
biographies and shortmeditations on the sayings of the deaconesses
of theearly church, the ammas, and the leaders of
monasticcommunities. “The Gift of the Desert,” she concludes, isto
allow us space “where our values, beliefs, andpassions are revealed
and refined,” space where “weempty ourselves of our own obstacles
to God.”
Jeani Synyard, left, chair of the Valentine’s DayGourmet Dinner,
and Mac Parks, chef, plan for thefundraising event at Christ

MarilynKemper, and Julia Ariail. Tickets for the event, whichwill

title or “other proper evidence ofthe status of title has
beensatisfactory to our Counsel.” AsKent wrote, he believed that
a“photostatic copy of the owner’scertificate of title,” with
guaranteeof no existing liens, should suit theneeds of A.C.B.F.C.
Kent confirmedas well that his agency had the“funds available for
the proposed$9,000 loan” to Christ Church andwould be able “to
close as soon asthe legal requirements have beenmet and approved by
our Counsel.”
Franklin, on October 15, 1953,sent a brief letter to
BishopMiddleton S. Barnwell in which heremarked, “Our construction
[of theSunday School Annex] isproceeding nicely.” Consequently,he
wrote, the time was right “to getthe necessary documents in
properorder for the closing of our loan.”To that end, he enclosed
for theapproval and signing by BishopBarnwell of two forms provided
byA.C.B.F.C. These were the“Authority to Mortgage” and the“Consent
of Bishop and StandingCommittee,” and Franklin askedthat the Bishop
return thedocuments to him “after they havebeen properly executed
in orderthat I may forward them on to Mr.Kent along with the
otherdocuments required. . . .”
While Mr. Franklin worked onthe loan, the Vestry dealt with
someof the financial aspects of theconstruction process. In
themeeting of October 4, 1953, SeniorWarden Jamie Carroll raised
theissue of paying the architect’s feecharged by Joe Bright for

Omer Franklin, Christ Churchvestryman and partner in theValdosta
law firm of Franklin,Eberhardt and Barham, began onSeptember 22,
1953, the applicationprocess for a loan of $9,000.00 fromthe
American Church Building FundCommission for construction of
theSunday School Annex. In a letter toRichard P. Kent, Jr.,
Secretary of theA.C.B.F.C., he emphatically pointedout that “title
companies” did notexist in Georgia; thus, any title searchin the
state was the task of anattorney. Franklin reported that hehad
conducted such a search forChrist Church and had found thatthe
title was registered. He includedthe title certificate so Kent
couldexamine it and make copies and thenreturn the document by
registeredmail. Franklin noted also that ChristChurch’s property
title was“absolutely clear and free of all liens”with one technical
exception, whichwas the ad valorem taxes for the Cityof Valdosta
and for Lowndes Countyfor the year 1953. These taxes were“not due .
. . [or] payable untilDecember 20, 1953,” but had beenattached to
the title as “a technicallien” since January 1, 1953. Inaddition,
he asked, in view of ChristChurch’s having registered title to
itsproperty, if A.C.B.F.C. would requiretitle insurance.
Kent responded via letter onSeptember 28, 1953, and
assuredFranklin that submission of a titleinsurance policy was not
required. He said that normally an abstract of
Sunday School Annex. On a motionby Marion Tucker, seconded by
HapDavis, Vestry voted to take no actionpending completion of
constructionand further discussion of thecharges. The bill from the
OrkinCompany for treating the structureagainst termites provoked a
similarresponse, that is, action deferred. Then, in the meeting of
November 1,1953, Vestry approved payment toMr. Bright of $100.00
toward his totalfee of $220.00. However, the Orkinbill did not come
up again until themeeting of June 6, 1954, when Vestry,on a Marion
Tucker-Glen Robinsonmotion, finally agree to compensateOrkin in
full.
In the meantime, Mr. Franklinwaited to no avail for the return
fromthe diocesan office of the two formshe had sent to Bishop
Barnwell onOctober 15th. Consequently, onNovember 9, 1953, he wrote
to MissZoë Coburn, Secretary-Treasurer ofthe Executive Council, to
inquireabout the status of the documents.Miss Coburn answered the
followingday: “Bishop Barnwell has been outof the office at various
conferencesetc most of the time since your letterof October the
15th and I regret tosay your letter got mixed up withsome others
which . . . [were] not forhis immediate attention. I amdreadfully
sorry. Bishop Barnwell isnow in Williamsburg attending theHouse of
Bishops but on top of allelse is this file to be attended
toimmediately upon his return the endof this week.”
Stay tuned. This story goes on inthe March 2011 Vineyard.

On Friday and Saturday, January 22-23, wecompleted the second of
eight sessions of the CDILeadership Training program at Honey
Creek. Duringthe first session, we focused on the need to
gatherinformation and the value of a number of differentmodels to
analyze the information and develop actionplans for spiritual,
community, mission and churchgrowth and renewal. During the second
session wefocused on getting a clear understanding of our
ownpersonality types and how we interact with others. Welearned how
to utilize our individual strengths whileworking in groups and the
value of having differentpersonality types in group settings.
Interestingly, noneof us have the same personality type, and we
bringdifferent strengths and ways of gathering, processing, and
analyzing information and creating andassessing solutions.
During this session, we continued to build on ourknowledge of
and ability to apply organizational andspiritual renewal models.
Training also focused onleading and facilitating groups and giving
andreceiving feedback in a positive and constructivemanner. We
appreciate the participation of those whoallowed us to interview
them as part of our homeworkover the past week or so – it was very
helpful! We arelooking forward to the next phase on March
