❖ ORDER OF SERVICE ❖
The people’s responses are in bold
We worship today according to the appointed order for Morning
Prayer: Rite Two, beginning on page 75 of the Book of Common Prayer
(BCP).
OPEN VOLUNTARY Land of Rest (Appalachian tune)
Setting by Wilbur Held OPENING SENTENCE BCP 78
Please stand as the officiant begins the service with one or
more sentences of Scripture. Officiant At my vindication I shall
see your face; when I awake, I shall be satisfied, beholding your
likeness. Psalm 17:16 Grace to you and peace from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:2 CONFESSION OF SIN BCP
79-80
The Officiant says to the people
Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of
Almighty God our heavenly Father, to set forth his praise, to hear
his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others,
those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And
so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him,
let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts
confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite
goodness and mercy.
Officiant and People together, all kneeling
Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in
thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have
left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have
not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we
humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on
us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in
your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

THE LESSONS BCP 84
A READING FROM THE BOOK OF GENESIS Genesis 32:22-31
The same night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two
maids, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
He took them and sent them across the stream, and likewise
everything that he had. Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled
with him until daybreak. When the man saw that he did not prevail
against Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket; and Jacob’s hip was
put out of joint as he wrestled with him. Then he said, “Let me go,
for the day is breaking.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go,
unless you bless me.” So he said to him, “What is your name?” And
he said, “Jacob.” Then the man said, “You shall no longer be called
Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans,
and have prevailed.” Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your
name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he
blessed him. So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “For I have
seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved.” The sun rose
upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip.

HYMN #638 Come, O thou Traveler unknown (vv 5-6) (Vernon)
Sung by all.
1. Come, O Thou Traveler unknown, Whom still I hold but cannot
see; My company before is gone, And I am left alone with Thee; With
Thee all night I mean to stay, And wrestle till the break of
day.
2. I need not tell Thee who I am, My sin and misery declare;
Thyself hast called me by my name, Look on Thy hands, and read it
there; But who, I ask Thee, who art Thou? Tell me Thy name, and
tell me now.
3. In vain Thou strugglest to get free; I never will unloose my
hold; Art Thou the Man that died for me? The secret of Thy love
unfold; Wrestling, I will not let Thee go, Till I Thy name, Thy
nature know.
A READING FROM THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE ROMANS Romans 9:1-5
I am speaking the truth in Christ-- I am not lying; my
conscience confirms it by the Holy Spirit-- I have great sorrow and
unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were
accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my
kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites, and to them
belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the
law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs,
and from them, according to the flesh, comes the Messiah, who is
over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

HYMN #638 Come, O thou Traveler unknown (vv 4-6) (Vernon) Sung
by all.
4. Yield to me now, for I am weak,
But confident in self-despair;
Speak to my heart, in blessings speak,
Be conquered by my instant prayer;
Speak, or Thou never hence shalt move,
And tell me if Thy name be Love.
Please seated for the reading.
6. Lame as I am, I take the prey;
Hell, earth and sin, with ease o’ercome.
I leap for joy, pursue my way,
And, as a bounding hart, I run,
Through all eternity to prove
Thy nature and Thy name is Love.
5. ’Tis Love! ’tis Love! Thou diedst for me,
I hear Thy whisper in my heart;
The morning breaks, the shadows flee:
Pure, universal Love Thou art;
To me, to all Thy mercies move;
Thy nature and Thy name is Love.

A READING FROM THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW Matthew 14:13-21
Jesus withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But
when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns.
When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion
for them and cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples
came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is
now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the
villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “They
need not go away; you give them something to eat.” They replied,
“We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” And he said,
“Bring them here to me.” Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on
the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to
heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the
disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all ate
and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken
pieces, twelve baskets full. And those who ate were about five
thousand men, besides women and children.

Officiant and People together, all standing
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and
earth;
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was
conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin
Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and
was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose
again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of
the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the
dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the
communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of
the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE GENERAL THANKSGIVING BCP 101
Officiant and People Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we
your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness
and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless
you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this
life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of
the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for
the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your
mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your
praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our
selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and
righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom,
with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all
ages. Amen.
A PRAYER OF ST. CHRYSOSTOM BCP 102
Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one
accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have
promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are

Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for
us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the
age to come life everlasting. Amen. ANNOUNCEMENTS PRAYER FOR A

THE BLESSING
The officiant blesses the people, and the people respond,
Amen.
MUSCIAL NOTES
“Though it may not be familiar to many …, ‘Come, O Thou Traveler
Unknown’ is one of the most important and, many say, the best of
Charles Wesley’s hymns” (Hawn, p.1). Also known as “Wrestling
Jacob,” it is a poem and hymn on the Nature of God. Based on
Genesis 32:24-32, it is the story of Jacob wrestling with an angel
sent by God at Peniel.
It is sung to one of several tunes, including one by Wesley’s
older brother Samuel. The tune we use today, Vernon, was written by
Lucius Chapin, a fifer in the Continental Army who served with
George Washington at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. He later conducted
singing schools in New England before moving to Virginia and then
Vernon, Kentucky.
C. Michael Hawn has written a history of this 18th-century hymn
which is still being sung in the 21st-century. Here is the link to
