I am so proud as a New Zealander that we can have such close contact and communication with politicians who are readily available for us. Patsy and I have just returned from a wonderful holiday firstly in Picton for a couple of nights and then pitching up the caravan we went and camped as far as the start of the Heaphy Track near Karamea. We had only one day of rain. We also camped at Gentle Annie and in Karamea itself. We rode our bikes to Seddonville, Little Wanganui and many other places. What fabulous scenery we encountered. I even rode an hour and a half up the Heaphy Track; much easier to walk than to ride! And no, I did not fall off! On the way home we managed to lose a wheel on our caravan! Fortunately, Patsy was driving, and I was asleep. I say fortunately because she drives at a much more sedate pace than me! So, rather than it end up as an unmitigated disaster with the caravan potentially rolling over it merely sunk into the ground and sparked and ground its way to a halt. The caravan now resides on a big car trailer at the Wakefield Auto Centre. We were well home by midnight. We had many people stop and offer help and one couple Sandy and Joe stayed with us for about 3 hours while Stu managed to help me jack the caravan up. The wheel had sheared off the axle. Never-the-less it was a wonderful holiday and at least I was saved the troublesome task of backing the caravan up the deanery drive! This week I represent the Nelson Diocese at the TPEC. (Tikanga Pakeha Ecumenical Council) I have a deep belief that the ordination of all clergy, especially in the mainstream denominations should each be recognized. To this end the Presbyterians and Methodists can easily interchange parishes with minimum fuss, something which I admire. Not so with us Anglicans. Next Saturday at 10.45am I will be at Anzac Park acknowledging Merchant Navy Day. I am really excited that the previous Governor General Anand Satyanand and his wife will be speaking at our cathedral on Trafalgar Sunday 18 th October. We are both proud members of the Willows Cricket Club. He is very much looking forward to being with us. I have just received sad news that Reverend Graeme Brady has died. Graeme spent the early years of his ministry in the Christchurch Diocese, and was best known for his amazing work with fundraising for churches and cathedrals, which he did both here and overseas. The Christchurch City Mission will be eternally indebted for his skills.

Dear Cathedralites What a week! Welcome today to Rachel Boyack, Labour candidate. Rachel is no stranger to this cathedral as she has been involved here musically in the past. Hi Cathedralites

I’ve approached some of our Anglican family from other churches and have a planning group, but what I need to know from you is who’s putting their hand up to help this year? Can you run an activity for an hour or so? Maybe to join me and some others on our steering committee?

Please let me know if you can help out in some way sooner rather than later.

J. W. Laing

If you can help, please contact 548 1008 / [email protected]

October 31st will be upon us before we know it and with it the annual Halloween celebrations. Last year we decided to step back from our Family Fun Night alternative for children and families here at the cathedral because we were hoping for more parish buy in from our neighbouring Anglican churches. Also, hardly anyone put their hands up to help within our own ranks until after the cut-off date for expressions of interest. So, let’s not allow that to happen this year!

Special Evensong Service this evening (5.30 pm) with members of Chroma Chamber Choir –

The Collect for Purity is said together

All Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden; cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, so that we may truly love you and worthily praise your holy name; through our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

New Commandment

Minister of the Liturgy Hear the teaching of Christ: "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another as I have loved you."

All Spirit of God, search our hearts.

The choir sings the Kyries

The Invitation and the Confession

Minister of the Liturgy Hear God’s word to all who turn to Christ: “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

God has promised forgiveness to all who truly repent, turn to Christ in faith and are themselves forgiving. In silence we call to mind our sins. Let us confess our sins.

All Merciful God, we have sinned in what we have thought and said, in the wrong we have done and in the good we have not done. We have sinned in ignorance: we have sinned in weakness: we have sinned through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry. We repent and turn to you. Forgive us, for our Saviour Christ’s sake, and renew our lives to the glory of your name. Amen.

The Absolution is pronounced by the Dean

Through the cross of Christ, God have mercy on you, pardon you and set you free. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace. God strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in life eternal. Amen.

The Gloria

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: Have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen

The Proclamation of the Word The Old Testament Lesson

Micah 6:3-8 read by Graham Allan

3‘O my people, what have I done to you? In what have I wearied you? Answer me! 4 For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and redeemed you from the house of slavery; and I sent be-fore you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. 5 O my people, remember now what King Balak of Moab devised, what Balaam son of Beor answered him, and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the saving acts of the LORD.’ 6 ‘With what shall I come before the LORD,

and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt- offerings, with calves a year old? 7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with tens of thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?’ 8 He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Psalm 124

1. If the Lord has not been on our side now may Israel say: if the Lord has not been on our side when men rose up against us,

2. Then they would have swallowed us alive: when their anger was kindled against us. 3. Then the waters would have overwhelmed us and the torrent gone over us: the

raging waters would have gone clean over us. 4. But praise be the Lord: who has not given us a prey to their teeth: 5. We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowler: the snare is broken and

we have gone free. 6. Our help is in the name of the Lord: who has made heaven and earth.

8 And we did not eat anyone’s bread with-out paying for it; but with toil and labour we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you. 9 This was not because we do not have that right, but in order to give you an example to imitate. 10 For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: Anyone

unwilling to work should not eat. 11 For we hear that some of you are living in idleness, mere busybodies, not doing any work. 12 Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. 13 Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right.

Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church All Thanks be to God We stand to sing the Gradual Hymn CP 6

1 New every morning is the love our wakening and uprising prove; through sleep and darkness safely brought, restored to life and power and thought.

2 New mercies, each returning day,

hover around us while we pray; new perils past, new sins forgiven, new thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven.

3 If on our daily course our mind

be set to hallow all we find, new treasures still, of countless price, God will provide for sacrifice.

4 The trivial round, the common task,

will furnish all we need to ask, room to deny ourselves, a road to bring us daily nearer God.

5 Only, O Lord, in thy dear love

fit us for perfect rest above; and help us, this and every day, to live more nearly as we pray.

The Holy Gospel Matthew 20:1-16

read by Reverend Ren Kempthorne

After the announcement All sing Praise and glory to God

1 ‘For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. 2 After agreeing with the labour-ers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 When he went out about nine o’clock, he saw others standing idle in the market-place; 4 and he said to them, “You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.” So, they went. 5 When he went out again about noon and about three o’clock, he did the same. 6 And about five o’clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, “Why are you standing here idle all day?” 7 They said to him, “Because no one has hired us.” He said to them, “You also go into the vineyard.” 8 When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, “Call the labourers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the

first.” 9 When those hired about five o’clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage. 10 Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage. 11 And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, 12 saying, “These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.” 13 But he replied to one of them, “Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? 14 Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. 15 Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?” 16 So the last will be first, and the first will be last.’

We conclude our prayers by singing the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for-ever. Amen

We stand to affirm our faith in the words of the Apostles Creed All I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven

and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was

conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended to the dead.

On the third day He rose again; He ascended into Heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the

communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

The Peace

Celebrant The peace of Christ be always with you. All And also with you. Celebrant E te whanau, we are the body of Christ. All By one Spirit we were baptised into one body. Celebrant Keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. All Amen. We are bound by the love of Christ.

Minister of Liturgy We worship God with our tithes and offerings as we sing CP 286

1 Break thou the bread of life, dear Lord, to me, as thou didst break the loaves beside the sea: beyond the sacred page I seek thee, Lord; my spirit pants for thee, O living Word! 2 Thou art the bread of life, O Lord, to me, thy holy word the truth that saveth me. Give me to eat and live with thee above; teach me to love thy truth, for thou art love.

9

3 O send thy spirit, Lord, now unto me, that he may touch my eyes, and make me see: show me the truth concealed within thy word, and in thy book revealed I see thee, Lord. 4 Bless thou the truth, dear Lord, to me, to me, as thou didst bless the bread by Galilee: then shall all bondage cease, all fetters fall, and I shall find my peace, my all in all!

The Great Thanksgiving

Celebrant To you, Lord, belongs the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory and the majesty.

All All that is in the heavens and the earth is yours, and of your own we give you.

Celebrant The Lord is here. All God’s Spirit is with us. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to offer thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is right indeed, it is our joy and our salvation, holy Lord, Almighty

Father, everlasting God, at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise through Christ your only Son.

You are the source of all life and goodness; through your eternal Word you have created all things from the beginning and formed us in your own image; male and female you created us.

When we sinned and turned away you called us back to yourself and gave your Son to share our human nature. By his death on the cross, He made the one perfect sacrifice for the sin of the world and freed us from the bondage of sin. You raised him to life triumphant over death: you exalted him in glory. In him you have made us a holy people by sending upon us your holy and lifegiving Spirit.

Therefore, with the faithful who rest in him, with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing:

The Choir sings Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of hosts Heav’n and earth are full of Thy glory Glory be to Thee O Lord Most High. Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest.

Please kneel or be seated

Celebrant All glory and thanksgiving to you, Holy Father. On the night before he died your Son, Jesus Christ, took bread; when He had given you thanks, He broke it, gave it to His disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me.

After supper He took the cup; when He had given you thanks, He gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins; do this as often as you drink it, to remember me.

All sing Glory to you Lord Christ, your death we show forth, your resurrection we proclaim, your coming we await. Amen. Come Lord Jesus.

The Celebrant continues

Therefore, loving God, recalling your great goodness to us in Christ, his suffering and death, his resurrection and ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate our redemption with this bread of life and this cup of salvation. Accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving which we offer through Christ our great high priest. Send your Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine which we receive may be to us the body and blood of Christ, and that we, filled with the Spirit’s grace and power may be renewed for the service of your kingdom. United in Christ with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, O God, in songs of everlasting praise.

All sing Blessing honour and glory be yours, here and everywhere. Now and forever. Amen.

The Communion

Celebrant We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread.

We do not presume to come to your holy table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your great mercy. We are not worthy even to gather the crumbs from under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the body of your dear Son, Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us. Amen.

The Choir sings the Agnus Dei as those in the Sanctuary receive communion.

The Invitation

The Celebrant invites the people saying

Draw near and receive the body and blood of our Saviour Jesus Christ in remembrance that he died for us. Let us feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The congregation is invited to receive communion at the High Altar. Please come up the left aisle and return by the right aisle. ** In this Covid19 period, we are offering the BREAD ONLY. **

Prayer after Communion

Celebrant Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink His cup bring life to others, we whom the Spirit lights give life to the world.

All Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name. Amen.

2 Kings 6:8-23

8 Once when the king of Aram was at war with Israel, he took counsel with his officers. He said, ‘At such and such a place shall be my camp.’ 9 But the man of God sent word to the king of Israel, ‘Take care not to pass this place, because the Arameans are going down there.’ 10 The king of Israel sent word to the place of which the man of God spoke. More than once or twice he warned such a place so that it was on the alert. 11 The mind of the king of Aram was greatly perturbed because of this; he called his officers and said to them, ‘Now tell me who among us sides with the king of Israel?’ 12 Then one of his officers said, ‘No one, my lord king. It is Elisha, the prophet in Israel, who tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedchamber.’ 13 He said, ‘Go and find where he is; I will send and seize him.’ He was told, ‘He is in Dothan.’ 14 So he sent horses and chariots there and a great army; they came by night, and surrounded the city. 15 When an attendant of the man of God rose early in the morning and went out, an army with horses and chariots was all around the city. His servant said, ‘Alas, master! What shall we do?’ 16 He replied, ‘Do not be afraid, for there are more with us than there are with them.’ 17 Then Elisha prayed: ‘O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see.’ So, the LORD opened the eyes of the servant, and he saw; the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. 18 When the Arameans came down against him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, and said, ‘Strike this people, please, with blindness.’ So he struck them with blindness as Elisha had asked. 19 Elisha said to them, ‘This is not the way, and this is not the city; follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom you seek.’ And he led them to Samaria. 20 As soon as they entered Samaria, Elisha said, ‘O LORD, open the eyes of these men so that they may see.’ The LORD opened their eyes, and they saw that they were inside Samaria. 21 When the king of Israel saw them he said to Elisha, ‘Father, shall I kill them? Shall I kill them?’ 22 He answered, ‘No! Did you capture with your sword and your bow those whom you want to kill? Set food and water before them so that they may eat and drink; and let them go to their master.’ 23 So he prepared for them a great feast; after they ate and drank, he sent them on their way, and they went to their master. And the Arameans no longer came raiding into the land of Israel.

Acts 17:22-34

22 Then Paul stood in front of the Areopagus and said, ‘Athenians, I see how extremely religious you are in every way. 23 For as I went through the city and looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an altar with the inscription, “To an unknown god.” What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. 24 The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands, 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things. 26 From one ancestor he made all nations to inhabit the whole earth, and he allot-ted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live, 27 so that they would search for God and perhaps grope for him and find him—though indeed he is not far from each one of us. 28 For “In him we live and move and have our being”; as even some of your own poets have said, “For we too are his offspring.” 29 Since we are God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the deity is like gold, or silver, or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of mortals. 30 While God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 be-cause he has fixed a day on which he will have the world judged in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.’ 32 When they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some scoffed; but others said, ‘We will hear you again about this.’ 33 At that point Paul left them. 34 But some of them joined him and became believers, including Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

Sunday Solioquy A walk up the little hill on which the cathedral stands as a spiritual focus in our city Scents of spring waft as incense from camellias and magnolias colours bright after winter drabness a bellbird chimes blending with the ringing church bells music of renewal, fresh awakenings on into the sanctuary of the church to stillness, peace and comfort where souls are filled with the Holy Spirit Let this day be a joyful celebration of ongoing refreshment and re-creation with music of praise resounding Let us pray with thanks to our Creator God of new beginnings and spring-song blessings

PRAYERS

PRAYER FOR OUR EARTH ENVIRONMENT: Creator Spirit, thank you; our land of Aotearoa is full of wonder. In Creation’s diversity all are valued in the power of your love. We sense your spirit in Nature, and our own spirit is nourished. When we sing of each flower that opens, each bird that sings, we pray for the will to take better care of Earth. Storms and drought are with us, our Boulder Bank is changing, our world is warming. Stir our minds to simplify our lives, re-use, reduce the dreaded plastic, for the sake of health, sea and landfill. Be with those who work in conservation, wildlife rescue, and who farm the land in new ways. In society’s need for progress, help us to make decisions that respect our environment. Source of Wisdom, You are concerned with us for the wellbeing of planet Earth. We turn to your presence. Guide us with your peace. Amen. 15

ST BARNABAS PRAYER

SUNDAY 23rd August: By wisdom You laid the earth’s foundations, O Lord, and by understanding You set the heavens in place. We praise You that nothing in all creation is hidden from Your sight or takes You by surprise. Please pour into our hearts the wisdom and discernment we need to face an uncertain future and growing persecution, where so much is different from what anyone has ever known before. Give us that heavenly wisdom which is pure, peace- loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. We ask this in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. (Proverbs 3:19; James 3:17)

Nelson Cathedral CHRISTIAN MEDITATION

Meditation is not something new. Rather it is central to the Christian experience and deeply rooted in Christian tradition. Meditation, also known as contemplative prayer, is the prayer of silence and listening.

This is the aim given by the Psalmist “Be still and know that I am God.”

All are welcome to join us for this ecumenical

prayer- a time of silence, stillness and reflection. Come and join our small, friendly

community of Christian meditators. It is suitable for everyone, and easy to learn.

Every Tuesday evening from 4.30 – 5.30 pm

The Chapel in the Cathedral, Trafalgar Square Mary Kroch 027 3721173 / Allen Michel 548 3337
