RECEIVING THE COFFIN AT THE DOOR

We receive the body of our brother Freddie with confidence in God, the giver of life, who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead.

Grant, Lord, that we who are baptized into the death of your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ may continually put to death our evil desires and be buried with him; that through the grave and gate of death we may pass to our joyful resurrection, through his merits, who died and was buried, and rose again for us, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE BURIAL SENTENCES

sung by Christ Church Cathedral Choir in solemn procession

I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. (John 11:25, 26)

I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth. And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another. (Job 29:25–27)

We brought nothing into this world: and it is certain we can carry nothing out. (I Timothy 6:7)

Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts. Shut not thy merciful ears to our prayers, but spare us, Lord most holy. O God most mighty, O holy and most merciful Saviour, thou most worthy Judge eternal, suffer us not, at our last hour, for any pains of death, to fall from thee. (Book of Common Prayer)

The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the Name of the Lord. (Job 1:21)

William Croft (1678–1727) The Burial Sentences We meet in the name of Christ who died and was raised by the glory of God the Father.

Grace and mercy be with you all and also with you.

We have come here today to remember before God our dear brother Freddie; to give thanks for his life, to leave him in the keeping of God his creator, redeemer and judge, to commit his body to be buried, and to comfort one another in our grief, in the hope that is ours through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Therefore we pray that here today we may know the peace of Christ in communion with all God's faithful servants.

God of all consolation, whose Son Jesus Christ was moved to tears at the grave of Lazarus his friend: Look with compassion on us your children in our loss; give to our troubled hearts the light of hope, and strengthen in us the gift of faith, in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

OPENING HYMN

Angel-voices ever singing Round thy throne of light, Angel-harps for ever ringing, Rest not day nor night; Thousands only live to bless thee And confess thee Lord of might.

Thou, who art beyond the farthest Mortal eye can scan, Can it be that thou regardest Songs of sinful man? Can we know that thou art near us, And wilt hear us? Yea, we can.

For we know that thou rejoicest O’er each work of thine; Thou didst ears and hands and voices For thy praise design; Craftsman’s art and music’s measure For thy pleasure All combine.

In thy house, great God, we offer Of thine own to thee; And for thine acceptance proffer All unworthily Hearts and minds and hands and voices In our choicest Psalmody.

Honour, glory, might and merit Thine shall ever be, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Blessèd Trinity. Of the best which thou hast given Earth and heaven Render thee.

Tune: Angel Voice Edwin George Monk (1819–1900) Francis Pott (1832–1908)

Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) Office of the Dead

The priest pronounces the absolution

May God our Father forgive us our sins and bring us to the eternal joy of his kingdom where dust and ashes have no dominion. Amen.

THE COLLECT

Merciful Father, hear our prayers and comfort us, renew our trust in your Son, whom you raised from the dead, strengthen our faith that all who have died in the love of Christ will share in his resurrection; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

PROCLAIMING AND RECEIVING THE WORD

THE EPISTLE REVELATION 7

A reading from the book of Revelation After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth,

holding back the four winds of the earth so that no wind could blow on earth or sea or against any tree. I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, having the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to damage earth and sea, saying, ‘Do not

Page 5: CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL · 2019-07-07 · I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth

damage the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have marked the servants of our God with a seal on their foreheads.’

And I heard the number of those who were sealed, one hundred and forty-four thousand, sealed out of every tribe of the people of Israel: From the tribe of Judah twelve thousand sealed, from the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand, from the tribe of Gad twelve thousand, from the tribe of Asher twelve thousand, from the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand, from the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand, from the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand, from the tribe of Levi twelve thousand, from the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand, from the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand, from the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand, from the tribe of Benjamin twelve thousand sealed.

After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, ‘Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!’

And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, singing, ‘Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen.’

Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, ‘Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?’ I said to him, ‘Sir, you are the one that knows.’ Then he said to me, ‘These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’

This is the word of the Lord Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL HYMN

Sing we of the blessèd Mother

Who received the angel’s word,

And obedient to his summons

Bore in love the infant Lord;

Sing we of the joys of Mary

At whose breast that child was fed

Who is Son of God eternal

And the everlasting Bread.

Sing we, too, of Mary’s sorrows,

Of the sword that pierced her through,

When beneath the cross of Jesus

She his weight of suffering knew,

Looked upon her Son and Saviour

Reigning high on Calvary’s tree,

Saw the price of man’s redemption

Paid to set the sinner free.

Sing again the joys of Mary

When she saw the risen Lord,

And in prayer with Christ’s apostles,

Waited on his promised word:

From on high the blazing glory

Of the Spirit’s presence came,

Heavenly breath of God’s own being,

Manifest through wind and flame.

Sing the chiefest joy of Mary

When on earth her work was done,

And the Lord of all creation

Brought her to his heavenly home:

Virgin Mother, Mary blessèd,

Raised on high and crowned with grace,

May your Son, the world’s redeemer,

Grant us all to see his face.

Tune: Abbot’s Leigh Cyril Taylor (1907–1991) G.B. Timms (b. 1910)

THE GOSPEL (remain standing) John 14: 1-6; 27

Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St John. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.’ Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father

Page 7: CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL · 2019-07-07 · I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth

except through me. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

THE SERMON

The Nicene Creed (please stand)

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. who with the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Page 8: CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL · 2019-07-07 · I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth

THE PRAYERS (please be seated)

The prayers conclude with this prayer

Heavenly Father, in your Son Jesus Christ you have given us a true faith and a sure hope. Strengthen this faith and hope in us all our days, that we may live as those who believe in the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, and the resurrection to eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE PEACE (Please Stand) The priest introduces the peace with these words

Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither be afraid.

The priest says The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Those present may offer one another a sign of peace

OFFERTORY HYMN

In our day of thanksgiving one psalm let us offer For the saints who before us have found their reward; When the shadow of death fell upon them, we sorrowed, But now we rejoice that they rest in the Lord.

In the morning of life, and at noon, and at even, He called them away from our worship below; But not till his love, at the font and the altar, Had girt them with grace for the way they should go.

Page 9: CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL · 2019-07-07 · I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth

These stones that have echoed their praises are holy, And dear is the ground where their feet have once trod; Yet here they confessed they were strangers and pilgrims, And still they were seeking the city of God.

Sing praise then, for all who here sought and here found him, Whose journey is ended, whose perils are past: They believed in the Light; and its glory is round them, Where the clouds of earth's sorrow are lifted at last.

Tune: St. Catherine’s Court Richard Strutt (1848–1927) William Draper (1855–1933)

The Taking of the Bread and Wine at the taking of the bread the priest says Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation; you bring forth bread from the earth. Blessed be God for ever at the taking of the wine the priest says Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation; you create the fruit of the vine. Blessed be God for ever

The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you, and also with you Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Father, almighty and everliving God, at all times and in all places it is right to give you thanks and praise:

And now we give you thanks through Jesus Christ our Lord. In him who rose from the dead our hope of resurrection dawned. The sting of death has been removed by the glorious promise of his risen life. And so with all your people, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying:

Page 10: CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL · 2019-07-07 · I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth

The choir sings Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed are you, Father, All remain standing

the creator and sustainer of all things; you made us in your own image, male and female you created us; even when we turned away from you, you never ceased to care for us, but in your love and mercy you freed us from the slavery of sin, giving your only begotten Son to become man and suffer death on the cross to redeem us: he made there the one complete and all-sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world: he instituted, and in his holy Gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again. Holy Spirit, giver of life come upon us now May this bread and wine be to us the body and blood of our saviour Jesus Christ. On the night that he was betrayed he took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks to you, he gave it to them, saying, Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Page 11: CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL · 2019-07-07 · I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth

The choir sings and all repeat each line

Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and as we eat and drink these holy gifts, grant by the power of the life-giving Spirit that we may be made one in your holy Church and partakers of the body and blood of your Son, that he may dwell in us and we in him: Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour taught us we are bold to say Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

Page 12: CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL · 2019-07-07 · I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth

The Breaking of the Bread The priest breaks the consecrated bread for communion and says The bread which we break is a sharing in the body of Christ. We being many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

The Communion Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God, who has taken away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed. Please sit while the choir sings

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem, O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant them rest, Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem, O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant them rest, Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem sempiternam. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant them eternal rest.

Lux æterna luceat eis, Domine, cum sanctis tuis in æternum, quia pius es. May everlasting light shine upon them, O Lord, with your Saints forever, for you are kind. Requiem æternam dona eis, Domine; et lux perpetua luceat eis; Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and may everlasting light shine upon them. Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) Office of the Dead

Guided by the vergers, the people come forward to receive communion. Wherever you are from and whatever you believe, you are welcome to receive at the table of the Lord. If you do not wish to receive, you are welcome to come forward for a blessing – cross your arms as you approach the person administering the communion.

THE COMMUNION HYMN

Blest are the pure in heart, For they shall see our God; The secret of the Lord is theirs, Their soul is Christ’s abode.

The Lord, who left the heavens Our life and peace to bring, To dwell in lowliness with men, Their pattern and their king;

Still to the lowly soul He doth himself impart; And for his dwelling and his throne Chooseth the pure in heart.

Lord, we thy presence seek; May ours this blessing be; Give us a pure and lowly heart, A temple meet for thee.

Tune: Franconia, from a melody in Johann Balthasar König’s Harmonischer Lieder-Schatz, Frankfurt, 1738 John Keble (1792–1866)

THE COMMUNION MOTET

Bring us, O Lord God, at our last awakening, into the house and gate of heaven; to enter into that gate and dwell in that house, where there shall be no darkness, nor dazzling, but one equal light; no noise nor silence, but one equal music; no fears nor hopes, but one equal possession; no ends nor beginnings, but one equal eternity; in the habitation of thy glory and dominion, world without end. Amen.

Willliam Harris (1883–1973) John Donne (1573–1631) from a sermon 1627/8

POST COMMUNION HYMN

(SUNG IN ADORATION)

Sweet Sacrament divine! Hid in Thy earthly home, Lo, round Thy lowly shrine, With suppliant hearts we come. Jesus, to Thee our voice we raise, In songs of love and heartfelt praise, Sweet Sacrament divine Sweet Sacrament of peace! Dear home of every heart, Where restless yearnings cease, And sorrows all depart. There in Thine ear, all trustfully We tell our tale of misery, Sweet Sacrament of peace!

Sweet Sacrament of rest! Ark from the ocean's roar, Within Thy shelter blest Soon may we reach the shore. Save us, for still the tempest raves, Save, lest we sink beneath the waves. Sweet Sacrament of rest! Sweet Sacrament divine! Earth's light and jubilee, In Thy far depths doth shine Thy Godhead's majesty. Sweet Light, so shine on us, we pray, That earthly joys may fade away, Sweet Sacrament divine

Tune: Divine Mysteries Francis Stanfield (1835-1914)

The Great Silence

The silence is broken by the post-communion prayer.

Page 15: CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL · 2019-07-07 · I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth

Prayer after Communion Gracious God, we thank you that in your great love you have fed us with the spiritual food and drink of the body and blood of your son Jesus Christ and have given us a foretaste of your heavenly banquet: grant that this sacrament may be to us a comfort in affliction and a pledge of our inheritance in that kingdom where there is no death, neither sorrow or crying, but fullness of joy with all your saints; through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. All say: May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
