Jesus, remember me... This is perfect prayer. It wins the good thief, known to tradition as St. Dismas, paradise. We should hope for thesame. Know that Jesus remembers you with love. He also re-members the Church as he restores all the members of HisBody to unity with one another, at least if they are willing. He never forces love. Love forced is not love. Please join me inprayer for the healing of the Church

Amazon Synod+ This article was delayed by more urgent matter of the desecration of the Blessed Sacrament that occurred at the end of October. Butthere is great concern over the state of the Church in light of the Amazon Synod. I want to dispel any worry about the future of the Church, espe-cially as regards Her doctrine. Here are my brief, hurried reflections on the matter. Any errors or lack of charity belong solely to me. As I stated previously, an essential truth of our Catholic faith is that the Holy Spirit is the guarantor of the Church. The Spirit protects theChurch from error. Even if a pope attempted to change an essential truth, he would be prevented from doing so. That's why I haven't been all thatworried, despite the hubbub and concerns raised by many pundits. The gates of hell, no matter how much Peter is sifted, shall not prevail. Still, there were some erroneous propositions that were bantered about by what I must call, irresponsible bishops. The one in charge ofthe synod bragged, "I've never baptized an indigenous person, nor will I." This practically negates our own baptism, refusing the truth annunciatedby Paul VI when he said that the Church exists "in order to evangelize." How tragic. I remember a story of a priest refusing baptism to a person outof "respect" for their non-Christian religion. Nemo dat, quod non habet. (You can't give what you ain't got.) I'll address two different categories of ecclesial concerns at the synod. One is doctrinal, the other disciplinary. Doctrine cannot bechanged, discipline can. The doctrinal concerns lay in syncretism, the belief that all religions are the same, worshipping one God, and any prefer-ence for Christianity is a form of bigotry. Any believer of their own religion should deny this. Why believe something if it is not the ultimate truth?Jesus said, quiet clearly, "I am the truth, the way and the life." Why would we believe or offer something different? The reverence given to native religions from the Amazon region was excessive, inclusive of prostrations given to the pachamama idols. Here is the Wikipedia definition given:

Pachamama is a goddess revered by the indigenous people of the Andes. She is also known as the earth/time mother. In Inca mythology,Pachamama is a fertility goddess who presides over planting and harvesting, embodies the mountains, and causes earthquakes. She isalso an ever-present and independent deity (my emphasis) who has her own self-sufficient and creative power to sustain life on thisearth. Her shrines are hallowed rocks, or the boles of legendary trees, and her artists envision her as an adult female bearing harvests ofpotatoes and coca leaves. The four cosmological Quechua principles – Water, Earth, Sun, and Moon – claim Pachamama as their primeorigin. Priests sacrifice llamas, cuy (guinea pigs), and elaborate, miniature, burned garments to her. Pachamama is the mother of Inti thesun god and Mama Killa the moon goddess. Pachamama is said to also be the wife of Inti, her son.

What is lost through such irresponsible efforts at ecumenism is a recovery of authentic appreciation of creation. Scripture gives us a better con-text:

Sun and moon, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever. All you beasts, wild and tame, bless the Lord; praise and exalt himabove all forever. (Daniel 3: 62, 81)Creation points and glorifies the creator. Those who live closer to nature often reflect a deeper appreciation of this. True enculturation capturesthis, and discards what is pantheism, the worship of creation in itself. Secondarily, the synod dealt with the question of a married clergy in the Amazon. This is a matter of discipline. The bishops, if convincedof the need, could change this today. It might create lots of confusion, but that is a pastoral issue, not a theological one. We have many marriedpriests, both in the Eastern Rites as well as the converts from Protestantism. The value of the Latin Rite retaining mandatory celibacy remains apastoral question that only Her pastors (the bishops) can resolve. The confusion that was fostered by the Synod is likely to discredit any attempt to improve humanity's relationship with the blessing of cre-ation and indigenous peoples. There is much to be done here, but we have yet to see anything substantial that will contribute to an appropriateappreciation of creation and the peoples whose lives depend on it. Full circle, only the Holy Spirit can clarify what the Church should be done in matters of justice towards peoples suffering particular needsin the Amazon region as well as an "integral" ecology that contributes to a more harmonious relationship with creation, which we had at the begin-ning in Paradise. Restoration depends on a sound doctrine and an authentic morality that reforms the human person and leads the willing to astate of grace with God, their neighbors and the great gift of creation.

Liturgical Note: Our server albs have grown old. We are replacing them with cassock and surplice this Advent. Cassocks with surplice serve to draw at-tention to the sanctity of the Mass, both for servers and assembly. More on this next week.

Food Bank In Outreach Building Mon‛s & Fri‛s 10am - 11:45am Wednesday‛s 4pm - 5:45pm

Outreach Ministry

Needed this week: The shelf where "SPAGHETTI" is empty in our Food Pantry is empty. We could sure use some pastas and sauces. While you are trying to remember what is needed, ponder the following brief history of spaghetti.History of pasta meals had deep origins in the eastern Mediterranean countries such as Greece and several territories of Middle East and Ara-bian Peninsula. There, meals made form dough were different in many ways to the food that was used on daily basis in Ancient Roman Em-pire. As historian records can tell us, the direct origin of the Italian pasta came from the Arab meal called “itriyya” that was often described bythe Greeks as “dry pasta”. This durable and long lasting meal was one of the main sources of nutrition for Arab traders who traveled all acrossthen-known world outside of Europe. Because of their nomadic nature and military conquest, the first European contact with itriyya was record-ed sometimes during 7th century AD when Arabs managed to occupy Sicily. There were rumors about Marco Polo bringing Chinese recipe ofpasta to the Italy, but his travels happened more than 500 years later. If you are not into shopping for pasta, we need gift cards. With holidays upon us, we always try to provide a little extra. We especially need gen-eral gift cards, i.e., Fred Meyer, Target and gas cards. McDonalds' and Subway gift cards are always appreciated too. Please support our foodbank with prayers and donations so that we can support others! Thank you for your generosity!.Number of families served last week 18

Called to Serve as Christ Campaign - Why a Campaign? As good stewards of the resources provided annually, our Archdiocese is able to fund its ongoing mis-sions and obligations. However, since that revenue is already earmarked to missions and administration,an extraordinary effort is needed to raise the funds to meet the goals set forth in the Called to Serve asChrist case statement. You can be confident that all funds the Archdiocese of Seattle receives, whether through parish billings,

Annual Catholic Appeal, Called to Serve as Christ campaign or other avenues, will be used prudently and effectively in furthering the mission ofthe Church. For Whom:

• This mission is for anyone who seeks the peace theworld cannot give.

• Are your happiness and peace dependent on pleasingothers?

• Do you freeze up emotionally when you are inconflict?

• Do you feel like you are the only on holding yourfamily together?

• Do you have difficulty saying "No"?• Do you work or eat compulsively?

If you can answer ‘yes’ to some of the above questions, then perhaps a Mission on Spiritual Healing can helpyou find that peace which the world cannot give—apeace that comes from a spiritual life led in union withChrist and according to Christian principles.

Before things go from bad to worse, come and learnmore about yourself by discovering a practical, spiritual program which, if lived one day at a time, leads to that “peace beyond all understanding.”

A free-will offering will be held for this event.
