Who is Siemens?

What is their challenge for Penn State? To redesign elements of the

campus to be more sustainable

Small scale and scope of the solution

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

Page 4: Chris Cavanaugh, John Chamberlin Bridget Hennessy, and Nick Petrizzo EDSGN 100 Section 11 WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM.

Sustainability: A concept with the goal of. . . Reducing the consumption and wastage of resources Operating with low maintenance and installation needs Requires little energy for operation Makes the customer more environmentally friendly

Customer: Penn State University Park Students

INTRODUCTION

Possible themes for the project: Restructure the campus transportation system Reduce electricity consumption in dormitories Improve the treatment of waste water through Bio-

Retention Reduce water consumption and waste in dorms

SUSTAINABLE OPPORTUNITIES

Page 6: Chris Cavanaugh, John Chamberlin Bridget Hennessy, and Nick Petrizzo EDSGN 100 Section 11 WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM.

A typical four person family consumes 3,500 gallons per month

East Halls consumes approximately 2.5 million gallons of water per month

Packer Hall alone consumes 315,000 gallons of water each month

CAMPUS WATER CONSUMPTION

RESEARCH

Page 8: Chris Cavanaugh, John Chamberlin Bridget Hennessy, and Nick Petrizzo EDSGN 100 Section 11 WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM.

By applying this data, the ideal amount of faucet use is 18,717 gallons per month: (4.5 hand washes per day)*(30 sec per wash)*(0.0157 gallons per

second)*(294 packer inhabitants)*(30 days in a month)= 18,717 gal/month

Consumption of water at the sink accounts for approximately 15% of the total water used in Packer ((315,000 gal)x(0.15)) – (18,717 theoretical gal. used)= 28,533

gallons excess! The goal of our design will be to eliminate the 28,533

gallons that are wasted
