You’re a Song to Me by Markus DetterbeckMarkus Detterbeck’s
sensitively composed pop ballad for choir is an expressive
declarati-on of love in a-cappella style. A piece that charms and
delights and quite rightly reaches its climax in the words: “How
can I keep from singing this song?”

MakwayaSouth African Choral MusicSong, Contest and the Formation
of Identityby Markus DetterbeckFor the fi rst time, this paper
presents the experts with a comprehensive repre-sentation of
Makwaya, a vibrant tradition for mixed choruses of the South
Af-rican middle class that originated in school choirs. In order to
track the varied history of the roots existing in the mis sion
schools of the 19th century to today’s great choral competitions,
the author conducted extensive research of archive material and
carried out numerous interviews. In addition, as a singer and
choraldirector he was able to gain vital experience in the choral
pedagogy domain. As a consequence, this volume imparts many-faceted
insights in the history and the present situation of Makwaya. The
book offers:• an examination of South African choral traditions and
their roots• a documentation of topical choral competitions in
South Africa• numerous illustrations and note examplesThe CD-ROM
offers:• more than 80 minutes of audio material (fi eld recordings,
interviews,
original recordings)• more than 40 minutes of video material (fi
eld recordings)

Single editions – Sacred, Christmas, Popular & Folk
Jambo BwanaTeddy Kalanda Harrison, arr. by Markus DetterbeckThis
rousing African pop song was composed by the Kenyan musician Teddy
Lalanda Harrison who recorded the song in 1980 with his band “Them
Mushrooms”. The song, written in the “Benga” tradition – dance
music from East Africa - quickly became popular in Kenya and even
made the Eu-ropean hit parades. Covered later by such well known
mu-sicians as Boney M., this is a groovy, laid back song along the
lines of “hakuna matata” (no problem) – now in a choral arrangement
by Markus Detterbeck.
 SATB – HCCS - 7121 € 3,80
Jubilate – Praise the Lordby Markus DetterbeckBased on a
call-response structure, Markus Detterbeck has developed a dialogue
between soloist and choir which is cha-racterized by rhythmic
drive. A dynamic mid-section provi-des a musical contrast before a
return to the rhythmic motifs of the beginning progressively
intensifi es the piece. Elements of Afro-American music are
skilfully combined with a poly-phonically imitative phraseology. A
powerful coda brings to a close this effective composition for
religious services andconcerts.
 SATB and Solo – HI - C6261 € 2,80
Soon I Will be DoneTrad. USA, arr. by Markus DetterbeckEven
gospel greats such as Mahalia Jackson included this message full of
profound faith and trust in their repertoires. Markus Detterbeck
has fashioned his groovy soul choral ar-rangement with haunting
rhythmic and melodic patterns and so created a powerfully
expressive choral piece that captiva-tes singers and audiences
alike.
 SATB – HCCS - 5720 € 2,80 SSAA – HCCS - 5736 € 2,80
Shepherds, Runby Markus DetterbeckA new, rhythmically rousing
choral hit for Christmastime by Markus Detterbeck. The powerful
Gospel sounds, the lively call and response structures in the solo
and choir as well as the “Gloria in excelsis Deo” calls
interspersed throughout not only put the shepherds in motion, but
that of the feet of the singers and audience, too.
 SATB – HCCS - 7065 € 2,80
Mah-nah-mah-naPiero Umiliani, arr. by Markus DetterbeckWith its
snappy opening motif, the song Mah-na-mah-na from the ”Muppet Show“
became a highly successful hit. In this arrangement, Markus
Detterbeck has taken up the mu-sical comic effect and expanded the
piece by punchy use of motifs from well-known songs.

Down by the Salley GardensHerbert Hughes, arr. by Markus
DetterbeckThis song numbers among the most popular of Irish folk
songs, and its lyrics are derived from the great Irish poet
Wil-liam Butler Yeats. Markus Detterbeck has composed a moving
arrangement of the piece, skilfully incorporating the typical Irish
sounds of the bagpipe drone. It can be sung a cappella or with
accompaniment.
