Choosing the Right GroundEngaging Tools for Motor Graders
Motor Grader Cutting Edges
2
Edge ShapeThere are two basic edgeshapes–flat and curved–withserrated edges available in both configurations. In addition, the Cat GraderBits Systemdramatically expands the range of edge shape options.
Caterpillar offers a wide range of cutting edges for motor graders. Each provides certain benefits when used in the appropriate application.
Using the right edge is critical for enhancing production and keeping total costs to a minimum. The three factors to consider in choosing a cutting edge are:
• Shape • Width • Thickness
Flat Edges are usually wider and thicker than curved edges because they are designed for more demandingapplications, including road maintenanceand pioneering. In general, flat edgesprovide better abrasion and impactresistance.
Curved Edges are usually narrower and thinner than flat edges. They provide the superior penetration and rolling action necessary for fine grading and finish work.
Serrated Edges are designed to loosenhard-to-penetrate materials such aspacked gravel, frozen earth and ice.Because of their ability to penetratequickly, serrated edges may last longerin some applications. For the mostsevere impact conditions, they can beinstalled over a 6" (152 mm) edge forimproved resistance to tooth breakage.
Cat GraderBits are part of therevolutionary Cat GraderBits System. These replaceable, tungsten carbide-tipped bits extend downward from theblade like a row of teeth to provide thebest possible combination ofpenetration ability and long life. For more information on the Cat GraderBits System, see pages 4 and 5.
Cat Tungsten Carbide Edgesare also available in all three basic shapes for use in areas of high abrasionand low–to–medium impact. See pages4 and 5 for details.
Edge WidthEdge width translates into wear material, so a wider edge usually delivers longer life.
For example, an 8" (203 mm) edgeprovides twice as much available wearmaterial as a 6" (152 mm) edge—at onlyabout 35% more cost. Plus, hardwareusage and edge replacement downtimewill be cut by 50%.
To extend cost savings even further, a 10" (254) mm cutting edge will last three times longer than a 6"(152 mm) edge when used undercomparable conditions.
Crowning is a normal wear pattern inwhich the cutting edge eventuallyconforms to the profile of the materialbeing graded. When extreme crowningoccurs or when finishing applicationsrequire tolerances of less than 1/4" (6mm), the best value may be a narrowerand/or thinner cutting edge. This reducescosts by minimizing the amount of usableiron thrown away.
Edge ThicknessPenetration requirements determine how thick your edge should be. Harder-to-penetrate materials call for the use of a thinner edge. In easier-to-penetratematerials, the edge can be thicker toextend wear life.
The quality of a moldboard cutting edge is usually judged on three factors:• Hardness• Wear resistance• Breakage resistance
Most Cat Motor Grader Cutting Edges are made of through-hardened medium carbon DH-2 steel. This material makes a tough, long-wearing edge with a uniform hardness in the range of Rc 42-52/Br 390-512.

Footprint
The vast majority of Cat edges are made ofDH-2 material. Cat through-hardened DH-2steel edges deliver excellent valuebecause they last longer and offer highimpact resistance. That means you’ll buyfewer edges, have less downtime andspend less money on labor and hardware.Plus, they’re covered by thecomprehensive Cat GET Warranty.
Caterpillar also offers high-carbon edgesfor those light-duty applications whereimpact is extremely low. High carbonedges have a relatively high surface
hardness and will provide good life in high-abrasion applications or in finish work. It isimportant to realize that high-carbonedges will not withstand the impact of aDH-2 edge and care should be taken tochoose an application with very lowimpact.
Caterpillar utility edges are heat-treatedDH-2 edges that offer an economicaloption for Cat 24H Motor Graders. Theseedges are intended for use in highlyabrasive applications where high impactand breakage are not an issue.

Caterpillar® Tungsten Carbide Cutting Edges combine the toughness of Cat DH-2 steel with the wear resistance of tungsten carbide. They provide extended life in highly abrasive conditions to lower operating costs.
Tests show that tungsten carbide edges can provide up to 20 times the life of a standard DH-2 edge. That means less downtime foredge changes and lower hardware costs for your operation.
Caterpillar GraderBits SystemThe Cat GraderBits System is a flexible, high-production road maintenance edge systemthat saves time and money.
How Cat GraderBits WorkThe GraderBits System starts with adaptersbolted onto the moldboard in place of aconventional cutting edge. Like a row ofbucket teeth, GraderBits are inserted into theadapter and are individually replaceable. Each bit is held in place with a snap ring.
Different sizes of GraderBits can be used incombination to create edge patterns thatdeliver optimum performance in a widevariety of surfaces—from rough haul roadsto paved roads with compacted ice andsnow.
Advantages Over Conventional EdgesGraderBits penetrate to the desired depthimmediately—even on highly compactedsurfaces—so shaving and scuffing areeliminated.
Fines and gravel flow through the gapsbetween bits and don’t end up wasted in windrows. At the same time,
subsurface gravel is brought back to thesurface for reuse—greatly reducing theexpense of spreading new gravel.
As a result, most road maintenance jobs can be accomplished in a single pass.
Other advantages include:• 6-10 times longer life than
standard flat (1" x 10") through-hardenededges
• Less time required on blade and edge maintenance
• More distance covered in less time meanslower overall cost per mile/kilometer
• Significantly less new road material required
• Better water retention helps control dustand erosion
Features:• Curved edge improves penetration and
rolling action• Trapezoid-shaped tungsten carbide tile on
leading edge stays sharp as it wears forimproved penetration and longer wear life
• Available in 2' (609 mm) and 3' (914 mm) sections for easy handling
• Reversible DH-2 overlay end bits are available to protect end sections from damage
Developed for high-abrasion, low-to-medium impact applications, such as:• Unimproved earthen material roads• Public sand and gravel roads• Mining or logging haul roads
Tungsten Carbide Cutting Edges and GraderBits
Standard Bits for large motor graders orwhen abrasion is high and penetration isn’t critical.
Wide Bits for use anywhere a continuous edge is needed, such as onpavement, finish grading, ditching orclearing shoulders—or on the end of themoldboard to prevent excessive wear.
Mix & Match Bits for specific gravel sizes, penetration needs or job requirements. Forexample, mixing bits lets you set a specificgap distance to control the size of theaggregate left behind.
Mining BitSystem forlarger machines (16H and 24H) in heavy-dutyapplications like haul roadmaintenance. TheMining Bits have twoseparate pieces of carbide for added wear protection. The first is brazedon the face of the bit to reduce wear as the bit moves through the material. The second piece of carbide is inserted into a slot behind the face to protect thebottom of the bit. The Mining Bit also hasan angled shank to facilitate properorientation with respect to the ground—reducing chances for premature wear.
The wide range of GraderBits widths and types enable you to arrange the cuttingedge into several different configurations tosuit your applications.
Sharp Bits for small motor graders or wheremaximum penetration is required.
Penetration Bits for midsize motor graders.

Selecting GraderBits ComponentsGraderBits adapters are available in 3'(914 mm) and 4' (1219 mm) lengths. Anavailable mining adapter has wide gapsbetween bits to accommodate largeaggregate. GraderBits are available infour widths:• 15.5 mm/.61" (Sharp)• 23 mm/.91" (Penetration)• 30 mm/1.18" (Standard)• 60 mm/2.36" (Wide)Operators can install the entire system inabout an hour and field-replaceindividual bits in minutes.

Cat moldboard end bits, overlays, repair plates and hardware help you protect, maintain and repair moldboards and workingedges for longer life and lower total costs.
Moldboard Repair PlatesMost moldboard damage can be avoidedthrough routine monitoring of cutting edgewear and timely edge replacement. Butwhen unexpected damage occurs, repairplates provide a cost-effective way toextend moldboard life.
Overlay End BitsOverlay end bits are recommended forapplications such as ditching thatcause severe wear on the cutting edgeand moldboard corners. They addstrength and limit corner wear, whichextends cutting edge life when an edgewould otherwise be thrown away dueto excessive wear at the corners.
When worn on one side, overlay end bits can be rotated for a secondwear life.
HardwareCaterpillar Grade 8 hardware isperformance-matched to Cat GET in both strength and durability. Grade8 nuts and forged dome head boltshave a minimum proof load of 120,000psi (830 MPa) and a tensile strengthof 150,000 psi (1035 MPa).
When replacing ground engagingtools, always use Caterpillarstandard hardware regardless of the application.
Moldboard End BitsCat moldboard end bits arerecommended for all applications.Made of through-hardened DH-2steel for added strength and servicelife, they protect moldboard edgesfrom wear.

While the main focus of motor grader operations is the moldboard, there arealso important choices to make when selecting scarifier components andripper-scarifier tools.
Caterpillar offers a range of built-tough ripper and scarifier tools andcomponents that make a difference by enhancing production and extendingmotor grader versatility.
Scarifiers and Components Scarifiers are available in two configurations, V-Block and Straight Block. Both havetapered locking grooves to hold tips securely in place.
V-Block scarifiers are the best choice for breaking up blacktop and looseningcompacted surfaces, rocky subgrades and frozen ground. Cat V-Block Scarifiers, also known as mid mounts, fit ahead of the blade, hold up to 11 shanks and loosen apath 46" (1168 mm) wide. They are available to fit Cat 12, 120, 140 and 112 MotorGraders.
Straight Block scarifiers are mounted on the rear of the machine and are best usedfor higher-speed applications (up to 3rd gear) in shallow, low-impact applications.Available to fit Cat 12 and 14 Motor Graders, Cat Straight Block Scarifiers accept upto 17 shanks and loosen a path 72" (1828 mm) wide. In some light-duty applications, straight block scarifier arrangements may be used as a mid-mount scarifier.
Scarifier Shanks are through-hardened and
tempered to resist wear, bending and breakage.
Shanks are available in two lengths:• Short for most applications• Long for applications requiring
extra penetration ability
Scarifier TipsCaterpillar offers
three types of scarifier tips for use onwashboarded and potholed road areasor where surface reconditioning isneeded. They feature a range ofmaterials to suit various groundconditions, with material combinationsoptimized for wear, strength and lowoperating costs. In normal to light-dutyapplications, the General PurposeScarifier Tip (pictured above) willprovide excellent reconditioningcapabilities. The General Purpose Tip is made from through-hardened DH-2steel and provides the lowestoperating costs of the three options.
Cat Ripper-Scarifier Components
Tools & ComponentsRear-mounted ripper-scarifiers enhanceversatility over conventional forward-mounted scarifier configurations.
Simply by changing shank position, it’s possible to either rip or scarify as work conditions require. Curved rippershanks are recommended for continuous ripping in tougher materials.
Ripper tips for motor graders are available in two designs—centerline and penetration.
Centerline Tips are appropriate for
most applications.
Penetration Tips are best for high-impact or hard-
to-penetrate materials.
The A.R.M.Scarifier Tip is made from
through-hardened DH-2 material andincludes a strip of A.R.M. on theunderside of the tip. This tip is intendedfor highly abrasive, low-to-moderateimpact applications. The A.R.M. willextend the tip life by 3 to 5 times that ofthe normal DH-2 tip and the A.R.M. willprovide natural sharpening of the tip as it wears.
The Heat ResistantScarifier Tip
is made from DH-3 material and isintended for use in applications wheresurface temperature is in excess of 400O F.This material is specially formulated toresist the damaging effects of hightemperatures and deliver longer wear lifein applications where heat build up is aproblem. One such application wouldinclude relatively deep penetration ofmore than 2" and contact with the roadbed for extended distances of a mile or more.

Even the best GET components built of the highest-quality materials will wear out faster if a motor grader is operated incorrectly.Proper operating techniques are essential because they enhance GET life and improve machine production.
Here are a couple of general operating guidelines for motor graders. Your Cat Dealer can provide other recommendations alongwith training materials and operator training programs.
The Cat GraderBits System is found by operators to be as easy tohandle as the conventional edge they’vealways used. To get peak performance, operators need only keep the tungstencarbide perpendicular to the roadsurface—and the blade at a cast anglebetween zero and ten degrees. GraderBitspenetration depth should be around 1" to 1-1/2", and operating speeds should notexceed 6 MPH. These operating guidelinesalso assure longest life for the GraderBits.
Operating Techniques for Reduced Costs
Correct moldboard positionreduces wear and extends edge life. If the grading angle is too shallow, penetration will be poor and heat will build up on the edge. This causes mushrooming or slivering, which reduces edge life. (Slivering can also create a tire hazard.)
Excessive down pressurecan dramatically shorten edge life. If penetration is a problem, choose a thinner edge, a serrated edge or the Cat GraderBits System for the most compacted materials.
With the Cat GraderBits System, operators only need to keep the bitsperpendicular to the ground surface with a cast angle between 0° and 10°.Penetration should be 1" to 1-1/2", and operating speeds should not exceed 6 MPH.
