The BIG Question?
• How can I increase the engagement of
my students?
“Doing the same activity in class was as exciting as having a PB&J sandwich for lunch everyday” – Dave Maurer
What are some strategies to boost
engagement?
• Integrate technology and media
• Variety of assessment methods
• Diversify learning activities
• Release Conditions
• Game Based Learning
• CBE
• Empower learners by providing
choice.
How can we do this in
Brightspace?
• Provide choice over course content
• Provide choice of assessment type
HOW?
• Leverage Release Conditions
Hands-On: Content Choice
• Build a module in content with the
necessary amount of sub-modules • Populate with content
• Create a quiz that will allow the learner to
set selection
• Set release condition on modules to
match score on quiz related to the
learners selection
How to Build• Create a module to deliver.
• Create the submodules or assessments.
• Create a Quiz to allow user to make selection.
• Build release conditions on the submodules/assessments that will release the appropriate module based on the score of quiz.
• Considerations – modify the submission view in the quiz to not present score from quiz

Competency Based Education (CBE)
Demo: How Does Brightspace Support CBE?
Need Brightspace FunctionalityOutcomes-based Design • When designing activities in our Content tool, instructors/designers start with the desired
learning outcomes and work backwards. Defining Competencies • Content tool can be used to define competencies as modules in the course.
• Competency tool can be used to further define competencies (e.g. specify learning objectives
for each competency) and align objectives to activity completion.
Prior Learning Assessment • Quizzes can be used for knowledge-based assessment, and ePortfolio can be used as a
method to organize and present competencies for skills-based assessment.
• Pre-assessments within courses can be used to provide feedback to the learner about their
gaps or trigger the release of learning modules.
Progression by Mastery • Performance on a prior learning assessment (including selected questions) can be used to
trigger the release of learning materials for competences that need further development.
• The Release Conditions tool can support the appearance of the next module/competency,
based on completion/performance on the previous.
Evidence of Learning / Direct Assessment • Ability to support multiple methods of direct assessment (quizzing, media submissions to
assignment dropboxes, etc)
• ePortfolios can also used to document learner progress and demonstrate achievement of
competencies

Feedback, encouragement, and remediation • Release Conditions and Intelligent Agents to automate feedback and next steps upon
completion of a task.
• Unmet thresholds on competencies or assessment performance can automatically trigger
targeted messages with support tips and additional learning materials.
Student Choice & Self-Monitoring • Checklists can be used to selectively release items based on student choice, e.g. learners can
select which tasks they would like to complete or what types of content they prefer to
consume.
• Learners also have options for the type of work to provide as evidence for achievement (e.g.
video, document, portfolio).
• User Progress tool shows learners their progress and achievement throughout the course for
self-monitoring.
Flexible Pacing • Learners can take as long as needed to achieve competencies and can re-take assessments.
• LeaP can be used to provide a personalized, adaptive learning path for each student and
accelerate new knowledge acquisition.
Credit, Certificates and Badging • Grade Schemes can be created to specify what a student needs to achieve in order to get a
pass / high pass for each competency.
• Certificates and Badges can be released to reward accomplishments.
