. /17Y# The town of Danbury was settled in the year 15:&£, and the

original name applied to it by the Indians was "Pahquioque."

Conspicuous among the names of its fh'St settlers are Thomas Taylor, Francis Bushnell, John Hoyt, James Benedict, James Bee bee and Judah Gregory ; these, with the exception of Beebee all came fi·om the neighb01:ing town of Stratford. Like many other towns in the State, Danbury came in for its share of troubles during the war of the Revolution. On

the 26th of April, 177'7, the British forces entered the town, d-ureU£-~:zs

set fire to and destroyed 19 1nildka0s a church, 22 stores and

barns, with all their contents. The force of the town was

then under command of Col. Cook, who, with a comparative

ly small body of men, was unable either to repel the inva

sion, or in any way check the ravages of the invader, so that

the streets necessarily :flowed with blood, and property of all kinds was at the mercy of the foe. But the war of the Revolution over, and peace restored, the good citizens of the town set about to build up the waste places, and to roark out, with

the hand of progress, ~venues and channels for enterprise

and trade.

As early as the year 1780, one Zadoc Benedict, With the aid of one journeyman and two apprentices, commenced the

manufacture of hats, near the present location of the depot

on Main street, the number of hats turned off being about three per day. T!lis is considered, upon reliable authority,

2

to he the starting point of the great hatting interest in this

town. Some eight or ten years later, the firm of Burr &

White started the first genuine "hat factory," which in those

days was considered a " big thing," as they employed thirty

hands, and turned off lJats at the rate of fifteen dozen per

week, whereas now, 100 dozen daily are turued out by the

larger manufacturers. The modes of manufacture were en

tirely different from the present methods employed, many

improvements having been made, and inventions brought

out for perfection in the manufacture of these goods. About

the year 1830, the silk hat was invented, and (as is not

generally known) is of" celestial, origin, having been :first

made by a native of China. In1835, 1ir. Alvin Hurd start

ed a shop employing five men, and thus introduced into

Danbury the art of making silk hats, which from the year

1840 to 1850 was largely entered into by Tweedy & White,

W. Montgomery, N. H. Wildman and others, but the demand

of late years being largely in favor of soft hats, nothing

whatever is now done in the line of silk hats. There are, at

'the present time, ten large hat manufactories in successful

operation, three wool and seven fur, whose united capital is

about $500,000. The busiest seasons are from January to

May in manufacturing for the spring trade, and ii·om July

to November for the fall trade. Many additional items of

interest might be given in regard to this great source of in

come to Danbury, but lack of space compels us to pass them

over. The retail business of the town is carried on tor the

most part on Main street, which is a broad fine· avenue, one

mile and a quarter in length, finely shaded in summer, and

where may be seen the residences of many of its wealthiest

Page 10: Choice Family Groceries, - Western Connecticut State ...

HISTORICAL. XI

citizens. Some of these are remarkable, not so much for

theil" huge proportions as for their adaptation to convenience

and comfort. On the west of the street is an eminence called Deer Hill, which commands a :fine view of the town and sur

rounding country. Distant some two miles from the centre -/t~nc-,<'.1{ J//L? ;;!>.;"~ P~r-G

is Lake Kenosha, WJiose pictm·esq ue scenery is much enjoy-"' ed during the summer season by excursionists and pic-nic

parties-fine facilities are also afforded for boating, and a small hotel supplies the wants of the inner man.

Not a little attention has been paid to religious interests.

There are ~ere, two Congt·egational, one Episcopal, one Bap

tist, The Church of Christ, the £andemauian, one Methodist, I

one Universalist, and one Roman Catholic. The first Con-gregational is probably the most imposing in appearance, and is capable seating over 1000 persons. As to Education, here

as in all the towns of this "good commonwealth, the people

have manifested the great importance not only of tlwro·ugh

education in the training of its youth, but also in erecting

buildings ample in their proportions, and attractive iiJ. theh·

surroundings. There is but one public school in the State

larger than the "Centre School" of Danbury. Some ide!!.

may be formed of its magnitude when we state that there are

at present, a corps of nineteen teachers aside from the Prin

cipal, and the average attendance is about 1000; the school ,

itself being divided into three stages, the grammar, the in

termediate, and the loigh. Although not yet a city, the peo

ple of.this town appreciate the power of the Press, and sus

tain one weekly paper, " The Dan bury News," which, under the management of Bailey & Donovan, is well conducted, and

ably edited, and would do credit to many towns of " larger

growth." Mr. Taylor, with an eye to the gratification of a,musement seekers, h.as recently e1.·ected a, handsome structtU'El on the corner of :Main n.ud W es., i~ the second story of

whicl1 i~ the Oper<\ llouse ' and we mm say, witllottt any

hesita ion, that (aside from Robert's Opera House of Hartford)

iJ is not excelled in the State. One ~agines himself seat-ed in a Metropolitan Theatre, with all the decorations and ap

pointments most :J.rtistically arranged-the stage room is nm

ple, and th~ audience room spacious, being capable of com

fortably seating 900 persons, aud Mr. T. is to be congratula_

ted on his success in the enterprise. To the :ndefatigable exertions of J. W. Bacon, Esq., the citizens of Dl!.nbury are

indebted for a good supply of pure and healthful water. The

:t:eservoir of the Danbury vV ater Works covers an area of

abont ten acres, and so great is the head of water, that streams from.fove fire hydrants have been played sirnultaneously

1 at

taining a hight of upwards of one hundred feet. The fire

hydrants are so located that nearly every building within the limits of the Borough can be reached in case of fire; and

steam boilers can be supplied directly fi·om the mains with

out the intervention of pumps. It is peculiarly adapted to

drinking and culinary purposes, being pure and soft.

The tt·aveler, hungry, wom and weary, need not go with

out a comfortable resting place in Danbury ; for here is

found three hotels, theW ooster House, Tnrner House, and

the Pahqnioque, any one of which will furnish yon with a

good sq,nare meal and a comfortable bed, for tbe re~uisite

number ofstamps, which will l.le gratefully recei\·ecl by the

smiling landlords of each, with the reqne;;t to " ca1l again."

hasty glance at the present, and reiterated some facts con

ceming the living, we must not forget those who have passed to the other shore. A drive at the hour of suuset, brought

the writer within the sacred inclosure of the" Wooster Cem

etery." The first object which attracts the attention is a sim

ple cross, bearing upon it the names of some fifty or more, who,

:fighting nobly in defense of their country's honor, fell amid the

carnage of the battle, and their bodies lie monlderiilg in the

soil where their life's bluod was spilt. Still fllrther on, in a

westerly direction, we iind a beautiful monument, rearing it

self aloft, sacred to the memory of the gallant " Wooster,"

of Revolutionary fame. This monument w;as erected in

1854, partly fi·om an appropriation by the State, by contri

butions from various Masonic Lodges, and by citizens of Danbury. The material is of fi·ee stone, and Jts height about 40 feet. On one side of the shaft is the coat of arms of the

State, ·while on another are recounted his deeds of valor in

"the days which tried men's sonls," and on a third side, the

announcement of the introduction of Free Masomy in this

State,. General Wooster having organized the first Lodge.in

Connecticut-Hiram Lodge No. 1, of New Haven. As we stood beside this noble work of art, and recounted the many

deeds of valor and of heroi&m, and the works of pure benevo

lence and philanthrophy which characterized his life, we

coJild not but wish that there were more among the living

to-day whose virtues could be as truthfully portrayed upon

their monuments when they are gone, as are those of the

noble Wooster. Seldom has it been our pleasure to v~sit a rural cemetery so tastefully arranged. Its serpentine \Valks,

grassy mounds, artificial lake, and trees of evergreen, giving

Page 13: Choice Family Groceries, - Western Connecticut State ...

XIV HISTORICA.L.

to it that air of calm repose so appropriate to the silent" city of the dead." The whole inclosure embraces about 100 acres ; and only 20 years ago this spot, now so pleasant to the eye, was one barren waste, but through the public spirit

and entel'prise of Edga.r . Tweedy, Esq., this comparative

wilderness has been transformed into a beautiful and attrac

tive cemetery, comparing favorably with those of greater pretensions, in our larger cities. Many fine monuments and

tombstones here and there mark the resti~ places of prom

inent and influential citizens, who, in their day, have lent· a

. helping hand to every good word !tnd work, and whose names

will never be forgotten.

We ·shall be obliged, in our limited space, to pass over

many matters of interest to which we might allude. We

will only add, that present indications point to a steady in

crease of growth from year to year. Bllt one thing is needed

to give a fresh impetus, which is, the introduction of new

manufacturing· interests. It is a noticeable fact that those

towns which are dependent upon one branch of industry are

generally retarded in their growth. And we incline to the

opinion, if capitalists should invest in other branches of manufacture in addition to hrztting, it would be the means of greater prosperity, and add materially to the population and wealth of Danbury. J. R.
