Chinese Opera Costume and Make up Design

I chose this picture because I like the design and pattern of this clothe. The patterns make the clothes look very Chinese. I think this costume is for a female, because the color is pink.

I like this costume because the flags at the character’s back make the person look very powerful. And her dress and hat are very colorful.

This picture shows 3 different kinds of hats and beards in Chinese Opera. The left one in the picture is for a fighter. The middle one represents a bad person, but the person is also a leader. The right one is a small leader, like the leader of a village.

There are two colorful hats in this picture. The pink one is definitely for a female actor. The red one could be used for a male, or a female. This kind of hat is usually for a fighter or a good character.

I like this picture because it is a very well made hat. It looks very delicate, it has lots of

decorations on it. I should be for a young rich girl to wear, because it has lots of jewelries on it.

This is a dress that woman wear in everyday life in ancient China. They also use it in Chinese Opera for their costumes. It is a very nice dress, has many patterns on it to decorate. And blue and white together look very nice.

In this picture, the person at left is actually a man, but he act like a woman. It is hard, because he need to learn how to talk like a woman, and act like a woman. I also like their costume; they look lofty, because they had many dragons on their costume.

This is one of the materials for making costumes for Chinese opera. It is called silk. Silk is a very soft material, in Chinese opera, the material of costume is very important.

This is a face make up in Chinese opera. It has white, red, blue and black on his face. I’m not sure it is a good character or a bad character, but I really like the design of the face. I like the blue, the color look peaceful.

White, black, and red are used on this Chinese opera face. White represent bad person, so I think this face is for a bad character.

Final Makeup Design

Forehead: YellowBecause yellow and blue are opposite color.

Page 4: Chinese+opera+costume+and+make+up+design(2)

Eyes: Brown and black. Because Chinese people usually have brown and black eyes.

Nose: Blue and Yellow. Because these two colors look good together.

Mouth: Red. Because usually human’s mouth is red.

Cheeks: Blue. Because blue means bravery and prides.

Jaw: Black and skin color. Because black means forthright.

Final Costume DesignHat

Shoes

Weapon

This weapon is a knife. In real life is should be made of steel or other metal materials, but in Chinese opera, all the weapons

I used red because red makes the hat looks more colorful. And when the person is moving, these balls will move too.

Blue makes it look more peaceful, plus I like blue color.

Decorations to make the hat look more fancy. Red and yellow are

very common colors for a great person. Yellow was most used by the emperors of China.

I used black for the boots, because I think black looks serious.

The sole of the shoes are high because it represents the characters identity. And the actors will look better when they are high.

This part is for “killing” people.

are made of wood. This is because if they use metal, then it will be dangerous for the actors.

This weapon is a knife,

Dressing

Flags

This part is for people to hold it.

These two are the most common decorations on the dressing in Chinese opera.

Yellow can make the dressing look brighter and loftier.

Chinese people like dragon, so they often put dragon on their items.

Flags should be wearing at the back of a person, and the person should be a fighter. They usually wear 4 or 5 flags at their back.

I put this pattern on the flag is because it is a part of the costume, so it needs to have something in common with the dressing.

The red tassel is for decoration.

This red tassel is just for decoration.
