Page 3: Chinese Pebbles

There was once in a small village a farmer who owed an large sum of money due to be repaid to a very ugly old man.

Page 4: Chinese Pebbles

If the money was not repaid, the law said the farmer would have to go to debtor’s jail.

Page 5: Chinese Pebbles

After a terrible farming season, the father did not have the funds to pay his debt.

Page 6: Chinese Pebbles

However, the farmer had a very pretty daughter that the old lender was sweet on, so the lender proposed a deal:

Page 7: Chinese Pebbles

He said he would cancel the debt if he could marry the farmer’s daughter

Page 8: Chinese Pebbles

.Both the farmer and his daughter were horrified about this proposition

Page 9: Chinese Pebbles

Seeing this, the old lender suggested chance should determine the outcome of his proposition. ..

Page 10: Chinese Pebbles

He told them he would put two pebbles …one black and one white… in an empty money bag,

Page 11: Chinese Pebbles

The daughter would then pick one, without looking …

Page 12: Chinese Pebbles

1) If she picks a black one, she must marry me And the debt to her father is eliminated…..

Page 13: Chinese Pebbles

2) If she picks the white pebble, she doesn’t have to marry me but the debt will still be cancelled.

Page 14: Chinese Pebbles

3) If she refuses to pick a pebble, her father will go to debtor’s prison…

Page 15: Chinese Pebbles

While speaking, the old lender leaned forward and picked up two pebbles.

Page 16: Chinese Pebbles

As he was picking them up, the daughter who had a sharp eye…

Page 17: Chinese Pebbles

noticed he had picked up two black pebbles and put them in the money bag

Page 18: Chinese Pebbles

But, she said nothing.

Page 19: Chinese Pebbles

The old lender asked the daughter to pick a pebble out of the bag

Page 20: Chinese Pebbles

This discussion was taking place on the road in front of the farmer’s house and the road was paved with pebbles

Page 21: Chinese Pebbles

Imagine for an instant what you would have done.

Page 22: Chinese Pebbles

What would you have suggested the daughter to do?

Page 23: Chinese Pebbles

There are 3 possibilities :

Page 24: Chinese Pebbles

1) The daughter refuses to pick a pebble

Page 25: Chinese Pebbles

2) The daughter picks out both pebbles revealing the old lender cheated

Page 26: Chinese Pebbles

3) The daughter picks out a black pebble and sacrifices herself by marrying the old « coot » and saves her father from emprisonment

Page 27: Chinese Pebbles

Take a moment to reflect on this

situation

Page 28: Chinese Pebbles

What should she do…?

Page 29: Chinese Pebbles

This story means to illustrate a point…..

Page 30: Chinese Pebbles

The difference between logical thought and so called “lateral”thought.

Page 31: Chinese Pebbles

The daughter’s dilemma cannot be resolved in an equitable manner using traditional logic

Page 32: Chinese Pebbles
Page 33: Chinese Pebbles

Think of the consequences of each of the three possible options.

Page 39: Chinese Pebbles

She plunged her hand in the bag picked a pebble and, clumsily dropped it on the ground

Page 40: Chinese Pebbles

Before it could be determined whether it was black or white, it mixed with other pebbles on the ground

Page 41: Chinese Pebbles

Ah ! Sorry!... I sure am clumsy, said the young woman.

Page 42: Chinese Pebbles

But no matter; if I remove the other pebble from the bag ….

Page 43: Chinese Pebbles

we will know which pebble I had picked first, don’t you think?

Page 44: Chinese Pebbles

Since the second pebble was black,

Page 45: Chinese Pebbles

The first one had to have been white…!

Page 46: Chinese Pebbles

. The old lender didn’t dare announce his cheating, ….

Page 47: Chinese Pebbles

The young woman transformed a seemingly impossible situation

Page 48: Chinese Pebbles

Into a very advantageous ending !

Moral of the story:

Page 52: Chinese Pebbles

A solution exists for most problems

Page 53: Chinese Pebbles

It’s just that we don’t always know how to examine all of the angles of the situation
