1. General introduction to Chinese charactersChinese characters are a written language that transcribes spoken Chinese. Because theyoccupy a square shape, we call them "square-shaped characters". Each Chinese character iscomposed of several different strokes, and the number of strokes varies greatly with eachdifferent character. The Chinese character is one of the oldest writing systems in the world.Dring its long history the shape they have taken has evolved continuously, but at the core itremains the same as when it was first invented.

2. T"he evolution of characters

O Inscriptions on shells & bones.

@ Inscriptions on ancient bronze objects.

O Ancient style of calligraphy, current in the Zhou Dynasty (lls century BC-256 BC).

@ An ancient style of calligraphy, adopted in the Qin Dynasty for the purpose of standardizing the Chinese script.
