The Chinese market is a hotbed for imported baby formula because indigenous consumers have lost faith in the integrity of their domestic producers and the safety and quality of their produce since the notorious melamine scandal which involved Sanlu milk powder was exposed in 2008. At present, the high-end milk powder market in China has been dominated by Mead Johnson, Dumex, Wyeth, Nestle and Abbot. In 2012, the total market share of the top five foreign players reached 60 %, while domestic producers, represented by Yili, Beingmate, Shengyuan and Yashili occupied the remaining 40%. Multinational milk powder brands share many strengths in common, such as proven track records and a long history of safe production, strong R&D abilities, high level production technologies, as well as advanced quality control system and production management experience. All factors have ensured milk powders from those giants with high quality and a reputation unsurpassed globally. With a large population of babies and the phenomenal collective buying power of consumers, the demand for imported baby formula continues to grow. It is predicated that the number of newborns every year will exceed 17 million and the 0-3-year-old babies will amount to a staggering 50 million in the next few years. Last year, the total number of imported baby milk powder was 88,600 tons which represented a momentary value in excess of 981 million dollars,
