1

It has been more than two decades since Oracle first began doing business in China. In that time, China has become one of the world’s fastest-growing and most important economies.

Oracle started doing business in China during the late 1980s, when it opened its first office in

Beijing. Today, Oracle has a presence in every province, autonomous region, and municipality that

is directly under the central government in China, including 14 branch offices and 4 research and

development centers, an extended and valued network of partners, and a wide variety of commu-

nity initiatives. As China continues to astound the rest of the world with its rapid economic growth

and ongoing IT transformation, Oracle and its wide-ranging partner ecosystem are there to support

local enterprises and organizations every step of the way. Oracle is a trusted IT partner in China,

offering proven experience in helping businesses become global and sustainable companies.

In China, Oracle has more than 25,000 customers, 1,500 partners, and 4,500 employees. Oracle is

unrivaled in its support of innovation and open standards. Oracle Technology Network, the company’s

online developer community, has 14 million members worldwide, including 250,000 in China.

With more than 380,000 customers worldwide, Oracle is the only company that provides the

entire technology stack—hardware and software engineered to work together, in the cloud and in

the data center. Oracle’s comprehensive, open, and integrated approach delivers tremendous value

and benefit. Companies in all of China’s key industries rely on Oracle to provide the highest level

of performance, business intelligence, flexibility, security, and scalability—at the lowest total cost

of ownership.

Oracle in China is a story of shared success. As China carries out its 12th Five-Year Plan, Oracle is

committed to using its innovative technologies to empower customers, partners, and communities,

with the aim of contributing to their sustainable growth. Oracle’s ongoing contributions to China’s

industrial development focus on three areas: accelerating the adoption of information technology,

supporting business transformation through innovative technologies, and cultivating the talent of

the local workforce.

Innovation has been the engine of Oracle’s success for the past 35 years. Founded in 1977, with headquarters in the United States (Redwood Shores, California), Oracle has annual revenues of US$35.6 billion and more than 380,000 customers—including 100 of the Fortune 100—in more than 145 countries around the globe. As the result of its extensive R&D efforts, along with its strategic acquisitions of Sun and other best-of-breed companies, Oracle is the only IT company in the world that offers a complete portfolio of solutions across the entire technology stack—from servers and storage, to database and middleware, through applications. Oracle systems provide customers with record-breaking performance, simplified management, and cost-saving efficiencies.

Whether companies require individual solutions—including solutions that integrate with heterogeneous IT environments—or complete, engineered systems, Oracle offers flexibility, choice, and maximum value. Oracle’s open architecture and multiple operating-system options enable customers to build the infrastructure that’s most suitable for their enterprise. And, the company’s broad portfolio allows customers to choose best-in-class products and solutions in every level of the stack. For example, Oracle’s business solutions include offerings for business intelligence and analytics, customer experience, customer relationship management, enterprise resource planning, procurement, risk and compliance management, supply chain management, and sustainability. Technology solutions include consolidation, mobile, security, virtualization, as well as cloud computing (private, public, and hybrid models).

Systems

Operating Systems

The operating system (OS) layer provides the core for all layers in the Oracle stack. Oracle offers two world-class enterprise-grade operating systems. Oracle Solaris is fully optimized for the industry’s two leading-edge architectures, SPARC and x86. With massive scalability, it delivers breakthrough availability, advanced security, efficiency, and performance to help businesses grow. Oracle Linux is the best Linux for enterprise needs, it is optimized for Oracle, and it is the only OS to offer zero-downtime patching.

Virtual Machine

Oracle virtualization software goes far beyond simple consolidation, enabling businesses to virtualize and manage their full hardware and software stack. From the desktop to the data center, Oracle’s complete and integrated virtualization offerings increase efficiency, performance, security, and access.

Servers

Oracle offers a complete portfolio of scalable, mission-critical servers engineered to deliver record-breaking performance, simplified management, and cost-saving design and energy efficiency. Oracle servers, including integrated applications-to-disk Oracle SPARC SuperCluster and Oracle Exadata Database Machine, are the ideal systems for Oracle and non-Oracle applications and solutions.

Storage

The storage layer of the Oracle stack offers options including Oracle’s Sun FlashFire technology and Sun ZFS Storage Appliances, as well as Oracle’s StorageTek tape cartridges. Each option is designed to help companies face the challenges of today’s rigorous archiving requirements and unprecedented data growth. Oracle storage solutions accelerate databases and applications with higher transaction rates, shorter wait times, and more throughput.

Oracle’s Cloud Strategy

Cloud computing provides on-demand access to a shared pool of computing resources in a self-service, elastically scalable, and metered manner, delivering significant advantages to users in speed, agility, efficiency, and management. Oracle’s cloud strategy is to offer a portfolio of software and hardware products and services that enable private, public, and hybrid clouds, so customers can choose the approach that works best for them. Unlike competitors with narrow views of cloud computing, Oracle provides the most complete, open, and integrated cloud offerings in the industry—spanning all stack layers, from applications to disk.

Fujian Mobile relies on Oracle Exadata Database Machine to manage increasing amounts of customer data and accelerate business innovation by analyzing and extracting value from this data. The telecommunications company anticipates that its full-rack configuration of Oracle Exadata will allow it to achieve savings of 50 percent in total cost of ownership.

China Resources Co., one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing conglomerates, has core businesses that span multiple industries. By implementing Oracle E-Business Suite, Oracle Business Intelligence Suite, and Oracle’s PeopleSoft Human Capital Management, the company constructed a solid management platform at the group level, increasing collaboration capabilities across its different business units, while supporting and driving business strategies for further expansion.

Oracle’s SPARC Enterprise M5000 server and Sun Storage F5100 Flash Array enabled PetroChina Changqing Oil Field Company to shorten response time from six to eight minutes to four to six seconds, boosting data processing speed and providing managers with timely access to oil production, sales, and distribution statistics.

Changan Automobile Co., Ltd. achieved an efficiency gain of 100 percent as a result of using Oracle E-Business Suite across all of its subsidiaries for customer relationship management, human resource management, supply chain management, and manufacturing. The auto maker also reduced the time needed for monthly financial reporting from a week to two or three days.

Applications

More than 70,000 customers worldwide rely on Oracle’s complete portfolio of enterprise and industry applications to achieve superior results. These enterprise applications include Oracle E-Business Suite; Oracle Fusion Applications; and Oracle’s Siebel CRM, Hyperion, PeopleSoft, and JD Edwards solutions. Oracle Applications Unlimited is Oracle’s commitment to customer choice through continuous investment and innovation in current applications offerings. The powerful combination of complete solutions and complete choice drives better business performance and helps customers tailor their enterprise business and IT strategy while optimizing their IT investments.

Oracle Applications also provide a complete choice of on-premises, private cloud, public cloud, or hybrid deployments, as well as a secure path for customers to benefit from the latest technology advances to extend enterprise capabilities. Oracle industry applications—such as those for automotive, banking, communications, education and research, healthcare, industrial manufacturing, insurance, the public sector, retail, travel and transportation, utilities, and others—can help China address critical development needs as the economy and businesses continue to grow.

Technology

Middleware

The middleware layer of the Oracle stack provides a software infrastructure for building, deploying, and scaling enterprise and Web applications. Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g is the #1 application infrastructure foundation available today. It enables enterprises to create and run agile, intelligent business applications while maximizing IT efficiency through full utilization of modern hardware and software architectures.

Additional leading-edge middleware offerings include Oracle Exalogic, the world’s best foundation for the cloud; Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c, the only complete cloud management solution for the enterprise cloud; Oracle Exalytics In-Memory Machine, the industry’s first in-memory BI machine that delivers the fastest performance for business intelligence and planning applications; and the Java development platform, the #1 choice for developers.

Database

Oracle Database, the world’s #1 enterprise database with more than 305,000 customers, is the standard for security, performance, availability, and scalability. Oracle Database 11g lowers costs and delivers a higher quality service by clustering and consolidating enterprise application databases to enable fast, reliable, and scalable private clouds; accelerating performance by compressing data onto low-cost storage partitions; and eliminating idle data center redundancy. This allows companies to double the productivity of database administrators and reduce the risk of making changes in the data center. Oracle Database 11g runs on all industry-standard platforms and moves from a single instance to grid computing without requiring changes to a single line of code.

Oracle also provides optimized engineered systems such as Oracle Exadata, the only database machine in the world that provides extreme performance for both data warehousing and online transaction processing workloads at the enterprise level; Oracle Big Data Appliance, the industry’s first complete and integrated solution to address the full spectrum of enterprise big data requirements; and Oracle Database Appliance, a simple, reliable, and affordable database system for midsize companies.

As the only IT company that can provide best-of-breed solutions across the entire technology stack, Oracle invests heavily in research and development. In fiscal year 2011, the company spent US$4.5 billion on R&D to create new products and services and to enhance its existing product portfolio. Oracle boasts state-of-the-art research centers around the world and was one of the first IT providers to establish an R&D center in China, in Shenzhen more than 10 years ago. Today, Oracle’s four Chinese R&D centers (Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Suzhou) closely collaborate with Oracle’s other R&D facilities and solution centers to build and share technology innovations in China and around the globe. Together, they deliver value to Oracle as a whole and to customers in China, through an understanding of the unique cultural, geographical, and business requirements of the region.

Oracle’s Beijing Campus in ZPark

In 2011, Oracle opened its new Beijing campus in Zhongguancun Software Park (ZPark), comprising the Oracle Research and Development Center, Oracle Solution Center, and Oracle Partner Solution Center.

The Oracle Research and Development Center in Beijing houses world-class teams that are bringing new ideas, technologies, and solutions to market. As the most important R&D location for Oracle in China, the center focuses on providing innovative research, product development, advanced solution architectures, and thought leadership.

The Oracle Solution Center, also located on the Beijing campus, provides a window to Oracle customers, enabling them to test solutions before they purchase, minimize lengthy development cycles and costs, and move quickly from planning to implementation. The Oracle Solution Center features Oracle’s latest technologies and products—including hardware and software, engineered to work together—as well as comprehensive solutions for cloud computing that enable customers to develop, test, and go to market with a wide range of cloud-ready solutions.

Education Initiatives

In support of China’s 12th Five-Year Plan initiative to foster an innovation-driven and technologically advanced society, Oracle provides education and training programs to Chinese academic institutions at all levels, from elementary and secondary schools to vocational schools and universities.

• In partnership with the National Center for Educational Technology and China Children and Teenagers’ Fund, Oracle Education Foundation has brought ThinkQuest Projects—an online learning platform that enables teachers to integrate learning projects into their daily curricula and students to develop twenty-first-century skills—to thousands of students and teachers across hundreds of Chinese schools.

• ThinkQuest International Competition challenges students—including many from rural areas in China—to work with peers around the world to develop Websites on educational topics.

• Launched in China in 2002, Oracle Academy prepares students for careers by granting software, curriculum, faculty training, and certification resources to universities. More than 250,000 students and 1,400 teachers from nearly 1,000 secondary schools and colleges participate, giving Chinese students a competitive advantage as they join the global workforce.

Environmental Initiatives

Oracle is committed to using its innovative products to enable companies to minimize and contain their environmental impact. This aligns Oracle with the initiative set forth in China’s 12th Five-Year Plan that seeks to foster sustainable growth by creating an environmentally friendly, resource-efficient, and low-carbon economy. In addition to providing products and services that support China’s environmental goals, Oracle runs its own facilities and business in a manner that minimizes adverse environmental impact, including—but not limited to—reducing, reusing, and recycling water, paper, and waste resources.

Volunteer Initiatives

As part of its Global Volunteer Days initiative, Oracle encourages its employees across China to donate their time and skills to projects that address social needs and make a positive impact in their communities. Some recent activities include donating clothing and books to schools, working with orphans and victims of natural disasters, teaming with college students, and planting trees to help protect forests.

CONTRIBUTING TO EDUCATION

The Chinese Ministry of Education

has presented its Outstanding

Contribution Award to Oracle for the

fifth consecutive year. The company

was recognized for significant

achievements and outstanding

contributions to the development of

China’s educational system, and for

its continued support of corporate

citizenship programs that further

national development goals and

enrich the quality of community life.

ENABLING THE GREEN DATA CENTER
