China Daily’s National English Speaking Competition (Deadline: 21 March 2018) Dear Students, China Daily will organize the “23 rd China Daily – Coca Cola Cup” National English Speaking Competition at Hangzhou Normal University (杭州師範大學) in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China from 13 to 15 April 2018. The Competition was established by China Daily in 1996. It has been running for 22 years with the finals held in major Chinese cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Nanjing as well as Hong Kong and Macau. It brings together the best contestants from hundreds of Chinese universities every year. Known for its strict procedures and authoritative judging, the Competition is regarded as one of the most prestigious events of its kind in China. Since its establishment, the Competition has served as the qualifying contest in China for the annual International Public Speaking Competition organized by the English-Speaking Union, UK. To learn more about the Competition, please refer to the attached information (in Chinese only). HKU will nominate 1 student representative to attend the Competition. Details of the arrangement are set out as follows: Period of Commitment 12 - 16 April 2018 (both days inclusive) Schedule of the Competition 12 April (Thursday): Arrival and Registration 13 April (Friday): Semi-final (Day 1) 14 April (Saturday): Semi-final (Day 2) 15 April (Sunday): Grand Final and Prize Presentation 16 April (Monday): Departure Eligibility and Requirements Full-time undergraduate students with valid travel documents to enter the Mainland Fluency in English Availability throughout the period from 12 to 16 April 2018 Past contestants of the Competition, native English speakers or students with continuous learning or living experience of one year or above in English speaking countries are not eligible. Cost The contestant has to pay for his/her round trip flight, and a registration fee of RMB$2,750 covering meals and hotel accommodation of the Competition to the organizer during registration upon arrival.
